Pocky Kurogoma (Black Sesame)Oh, some dear readers (and neighbor) have led me astray ... they’ve raved about the Black Sesame Pocky and I believed them! (See comments in this post.)
This is just like that: a crunchy and mild cracker stick covered with milky sweet white coating and mixed with every vile black seed known to create an acrid tasting treat. (Okay, I overstated that. I actually ate one of the four packets in the interest of giving a full-featured review, so it can’t be all that bad.) But there are other things that cause me to hesitate to recommend this, and they involve reading the label. Here are the ingredients: wheat flour, sugar, palm oil, powdered (black sesame, black rice, black bean, black pine seed, black Chinese quince), lactose, whole milk powder, shortening (hydrogenated fish oil), nonfat dry milk, malt extract, salt, yeast, butter, soya lecithin, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), artificial flavor. Maybe there are some omega3 fatty acids in there. Besides my innate displeasure for toasted sesame, the Pocky were nice. This variety comes in four smaller packets instead of the two large packets like the Men’s and traditional chocolate (so that you may give them away more easily without being offended by the smell). I am happy to report that this bad review is just because of my personal tastes - it has nothing to do with this being a good product. Feel free to defend the Black Sesame Pocky. If you like toasted sesame, you’ll probably be ga-ga for this, too. I know some folks think I’m nuts for liking the stuff I do, and I think it’s great that the planet affords such a variety of products. And I will be passing along the rest of this package to my dear neighbor how does happen to like the stuff. I’m also happy to report that I picked up several other varieties at the same time and they’re all delightful and you can look forward to nice statements about them.

Have you tried the soybean flavor? I love that one too.
Yeah, I bought this and another (Strawberry Cream with Dried Strawberry Bits) and was disappointed by most, though, I was able to actually somtach the Strawberry. I couldn’t stand the Black Sesame… It tastes like chalky chocolate or something.
My daughter is a huge fan of anime’, so we journey to the closest anime’ store (about 30 miles) once a month or so.
Yesterday was the day, and whenever we go, she loads up on Pocky (even though they sell chocolate and strawberry coat at the nearby Walmart LOL)
Yesterday she got “reverse pocky” which had the strip of soft chocolate on the inside, and the crunchy pretzel-ish (but chocolate flavor) part on the outside. It resembled a pencil - LOL The thin strip of soft choc. was like a pencil lead encased in the uncoated outer section.
I didn’t like it as well, but it was interesting.

I’m loving the black sesame Pocky. If anyone has tried the Chinese black sesame dessert soup and likes it, then you’ll love the Pocky! I’m a black sesame freak, I love black sesame ice cream too! It has a robust, nutty and sweet flavor that isn’t cloyingly sweet… just sweet enough. I’m allergic to peanuts (even though I love them), so this is a nice alternative for me.
Sorry to post in such an old er post, but I was just going over the old Pocky archives (hee) and had to comment on the seasame seeds. I hate HATE the black ones, if i even see them it makes my gut clench. There was a recipe in a cake book I bought for sultana and black seasame cheesecake. Everytime I got to that page I’d look at it with horror, I want to glue those pages together! *shudder*
I have a box of this right in front of me now, and my ingredients list says it contains “forbidden rice”. Hmm…
I think it’s okay- I had some of the soybean flour Pocky recently, and I think they taste the same. Maybe my tastebuds are just out of whack…
I’m not sure why you’re so surprised they used fish oil. Almost everything in Japan is made from fish, cause they’re an island.

I also hate sesame oil! At times I’ve felt like I must be the only person who feels that way. I won’t eat a lot of korean sweets because they often have sesame oil and it just ruins it completely for me. Anyway, I’ve never tried these but I suspect I would dislike them too. My favorites are the strawberry pocky that has the little freeze-dried strawberry bits (soooo good), the blueberry pocky which was made in a similar way and released as a limited edition item last summer, and the limited Matcha Toppo (which are like inside-out Pocky only filled with a green tea flavored cream). Toppo are, in my opinion, much better than Pocky (except for the strawberry and blueberry flavors).
