Yes, they’re back. I’ve got more KitKats. I’ve got soooo many KitKats. However, these are the only KitKats branded by an Iron Chef (Yasumasa Takagi).
The pair I’ll review today are from the Chocolatier line from Japan: Strawberry, Pistachio, Almond and Thyme. These have been around for a few months and as international KitKats go, they’re not that hard to get a hold of, as many eBay vendors, JBox.com and even Amazon seem to have them in stock. They come in a pretty little lift-top box (about the same footprint as a box of tissues) and hold 16 little individually wrapped fingers.
These are slightly smaller than regular KitKats, they’re actually the same size as those minis I tried after Christmas in the Dark Mint Chocolate.
This little morsel smells like milk and sugar. There’s only the slightest hint of strawberry in there, without the tangy berry bite, just a vague floral taste. The nutty flavors are also very subtle. I got no sense of the thyme whatsoever.
That’s not to say that it wasn’t nice, it wasn’t as sweet as some other white chocolate versions of KitKat, such as the Matcha, it’s just so refined it’s beyond me. As fruity KitKats go, I think I liked the Strawberry KitKat from Japan a bit better, mostly because it was more strawberry-y.
The second little box is Ujimaccha, Kinako, Ume by Patissier Takagi. That’s green tea, soybean and sour plum.
These are also wonderfully pretty. Subtly green and sweet smelling with a little woodsy hit of tea and malt.
The sour plum hits me more as a salty taste, which is good to cut through the sweet white chocolate coating.
The packaging on these is very nice, it’s easy to have one or two little fingers and then reclose the box. It’s also great for sharing, people think it’s a really nice bit of candy I’m offering them. Of course the packaging might be a little extreme, it feels like I’ve eaten a lot when I have three and there’s a huge pile of wrappers next to me and I’ve eaten less than an ounce.
Sera at Candy Addict also had similar feelings in her review a few weeks ago.

i thought these were a bit of a disappointment, since they sound so exotic but are in actuality EXTREMELY subtle.
i just had the Sakurambo kit kat and it is by far the worst i’ve ever had; it’s like eating a stick of lip balm.
I’m a huge fan of the Japanese Kit Kats, more for the box design and literal Kit Kat design moreso than the taste though. I’m sure you can understand that if you were to eat a Red Bead soybean flavour Kit Kat. Pretty to look at, not so much to eat.
Awwhhh! Thanks for the link Cybele! <3
I just go some of the new limited edition KitKats from 7-11 Japan: Yubari Melon, Blood Orange and Choco Banana. I was really impressed with all three, I suggest checking them out if you have the chance.
omg! thanks so much ... i didn’t even think bout looking up to see if there are groups for these kinds of things >_<!!! thanks again!
I love kitkats! I love that every country seems to have their own elusive flavor. I’ll probably have to order these just to taste them. I found a chocolate with lemon creme a few months ago, if they pop up again, I’ll be sure to let you know!
Being in somewhat close proximity to Japan and the fact that we get so many Japanese tourists, I would think that we here in Hawaii would be able to get our hands on some of these Japanese flavors of Kit Kat. But I have yet to see any.
I think I need to plan a trip to Japan—or just order them from eBay or J-List.
Ruffy - I’ve been hoping to stumble on the Sakurambo KitKat for a while but have been afraid that it will taste like a cough medicine soaked white chocolate rabbit.
Terry - I have the red bean right here! As red bean candies go, the Morinaga Azuki Caramels were outstanding (I ate them before I could photograph them).
Sera - I’m rather interested in the choco-banana, especially since I liked the banana-ness of the Fruit Parfait.
Sunny - let us know how your swapping goes!
Sabrina - there are also some American cherry ones that were at Target around Valentines (but no where else that I could find).
Marvo - JBox has an assortment of them, though they always seem a little behind.
A coworker just returned from Australia and brought me two new limited edition flavors from there.
I ordered my second case of the White Chocolate Cherry flavored Kit Kats from Japan. They only sell them in the spring. I highly recommend them!
There is this video on youtube of a guy talking about green kit kat’s
