KitKat Caramel

imageNope, not a Limited Edition find, Hershey’s has just jumped in and added the KitKat Caramel to their repertoire. Instead of being the four finger bar, this one is modeled on the super KitKat single finger (thumb?).

I didn’t like this format bar when it was the “Extra Crispy” one, so I was dreading this one a bit.

It smelled buttery, which I found rather pleasant. My bar had a caramel leak (much like the Valomilk) which meant that the caramel reservoir at the top of the bar was a little scant when I bit into it. Later in the bar the caramel density picked up to their intended levels, which was a nice proportion. It’s a sweet bar, but the caramel has a buttery and salty snap that mellows out the sugary, grainy chocolate, bland wafers and grainier cream filling.

If anything, there was too much chocolate on the sides of the bar. Perhaps it’s structurally necessary, but I found it interfered with my caramel enjoyment. The other annoyance with this bar is that you can’t put it down. I mean, you can, but the caramel flows out and you’ve got yourself a sticky cara-mess.

I still prefer the original KitKat, but the salty bite of the flowing caramel is compelling so I’ll give this one another try at some point.

  2. For some reason I thought having the caramel at the top doesn’t seem structurally reasonable because when you bite into the bar the chocolate on the top could crack, causing a caramel flow, which could lead to sticky fingers.  Oh, where’s a structural engineer when I need one.

  3. I got to try an import Kit Kat Editions Golden Caramel a while back and I really liked it (I’m biased, though - I fiend for Kit Kats).  I’ve got to try and find the new US version and see if I still like it and if there is anything at all different (which I doubt).

And you are dead on about the very liquid nature of the caramel.  It caught me by surprise and I ended up propping it up on it’s end so I could type without it leaking all over my desk.

  4. The number of varities of chocolate that Hershey’s is putting out is amazing.  I don’t know how they keep track of everything they make these days.

  5. I found these yesterday and tried them.  I love caramel, but these didn’t work for me.  I think if the caramel was between the layers of cookie it might have been better.  I don’t know.

I’ll stick to the Big Kat and the limited edition (that I can’t find anymore) regular Hershey’s bar with caramel.

  6. I think you are WRONG!!!!!!!!!!

  7. MarcoPolo - you think who is wrong? Me? I gave it a marginally good review ... so you’re saying it’s a terrible bar or a fantastic bar?

Sera - I got it at Walgreen’s (where I get stuff is always in the spec box at the bottom of the review). I’ve also seen it at 7-11.

Marvo - I think the bar is a series of compromises. I think the caramel should have been in between the layers, but maybe that presented other issues.

William - I hadn’t even thought about tipping it up! It’s a pretty beefy bar and probably stands on its own.

Ash - I don’t think Hershey’s is keeping track. I think they’ve given up on updating their website at least.

MusicalMom - I saw the caramel bars at Dollar Tree a few weeks ago, so you might want to try the closeout stores.

  8. I enjoyed it, but I also believe the caramel should be in the center of the bar, not on top. It made it awkward to bite.

As far as being messy, there are plenty of other things I can think of that are very successful and much messier (Cadbury eggs, anyone?). If it’s gonna have goo, it’s going to be potentially messy.

  9. I bought this today and I am waiting to eat. I wanted to read your review before I ate it. Now, I am assured that it will be good.

  10. I found one of these by accident at an obscure gas station on my way home from my parents’ house one night, and it was hellishly cold outside, and in my car.
I was practically falling asleep, so I had to stop and buy some sugar and caffeine.

I suggest eating these in colder temperatures, because I had no problem with runny caramel.

And they are divine, I’ve been trying to find them around here but I’ve had no luck so far.
