Ferrero Rocher

One of the more familiar candies that’s marketed for Valentine’s Day would be the Ferrero Rocher. They’re pretty candies all year round but during the season for lovers they’re placed in clear plastic heart-shaped domes of varying sizes.

image

I picked up a 3 pack because I was cheap and didn’t really want another heart-shaped box. It’s what’s inside that counts, right?

Ferrero is an Italian company that makes all sorts of hazelnut confections, some under the Ferrero name and others under the Kinder name. Their best known, perhaps, is Nutella, but they also make the Kinder Eggs, Tronky, Pocket Coffee, Kinder Bueno, Kinder Happy Hippos and Tic Tacs. The Ferrero Rocher wasn’t introduced until 1982 and didn’t make it to the US until 1985 but it has quickly filled a niche in the confectionery market as an upscale chocolate available at drug stores and grocers in more than 100 countries.

imageBut what is a Ferrero Rocher? At its center is a whole hazelnut, surrounded by a chocolate hazelnut paste filling which is inside a light chocolate wafer sphere covered in more chocolate and crushed nuts.

These were nice and fresh and had a wonderful sweet chocolatey aroma mixed with the smell of hazelnuts. They’re a bit big, but can fit in your mouth as one bite, though I usually do it in two (to see if I get the whole hazenut in the first or the second). They’re very nutty which helps to keep them from being too sweet. They’re much better, as far as I’m concerned, than Tronky, Happy Hippos or Kinder Bueno. I think it’s that the hazelnuts are so strongly featured. The packaging is also quite smart and classic. If you see them on sale after Valentine’s, this is an excellent product to pick up.

Their caloric density is rather high (169 calories per ounce) so it’s a good indulgence for a special occasion or in moderation. There are no trans fats in them.

  1. Oh the Roche are very nice. But my favorite is the Rafaello!  Oh, how I adore the coconut. Pity, it’s hard to find.  Sometimes I can find it around the holidays…

  2. I’ve always loved Ferrero Rocher, they market themselves as upscale, which I don’t agree with but they are still a guilty pleasure on holidays.

  3. Mmm yum, i love them. You should try ferrero garden :o)

  4. I fell in love with these when visiting my wife’s family in Catania, Sicily.

I was so glad to see that they were available here when we came back. These are the single best chocolate-hazelnut “hit” I have ever tasted. The crunchy, ice cream cone style wafer layer makes it close to perfection.

    YUM!

  6. i also hear that people in hong kong like these as gifts, simply because of the gold wrappers (for good luck).

Comment by annie on 2/05/07 at 3:44 pm

  7. At work, the HR department had a Christmas tree-shaped stack of these.  I’ve never had them before, but their gold foil reminded me of Almond Roca.  No one was eating them, so every day I ate one, and they were good.  Now that I know they’re 169 calories per ounce, I regret eating them.

  8. Ferrero Rocher is notorious in Europe for its cheesy and poorly dubbed commercials featuring a blonde bimbo thanking an ambassador for “spoiling” them with Ferrero Rocher in an official banquet.

They’re not high-end, but they are good. Part of the reason is that Ferrero has monopolized the production of a specific variety of Piedmon hazelnuts in Italy, that lend their distinctive taste to Nutella (the real kind from Europe, not the bowdlerized version in the US with peanut oil) and Rocher. You can often find big boxes of them on sale at Costco.

Comment by Fazal Majid on 2/05/07 at 11:21 pm

  9. Ahhh! I never realized I had an Americanized version of Nutella!!!!  Now I will have to buy it at the European Market!

  10. Does anyone know the name of the dark chocolate version of ferrero rocher?...i’m not sure if its under the same brand, but its basically the same thing except its dark chocolate and its in a red wrapper. I ate one a few months ago, but sadly I forgot to look at the name on the wrapper and threw it away.

Comment by Kristin on 2/07/07 at 12:43 pm

  11. Baci form Perugina is much better than Ferrero Rocher. Try it.

Comment by Mia on 2/17/07 at 6:38 pm

  12. Mia - I’ve reviewed the Baci before ... it got a 10. However, Perugina is now owned by Nestle ... some folks don’t like that, so this is an alternative.

Kristin - I haven’t seen a dark chocolate one, but I’ll keep my eye out (there’s no mention of it on the website).

April - I didn’t know that either, tho the first time I had Nutella I was buying it in Toronto. (I was afraid they were going to take it away from me at the border because I had so much.)

Fazal - I imagine that their ads are rather like those curious ones we used to have for Mentos.

Marvo - each one doesn’t weight that much since they have that foamy wafer. (Okay, that doesn’t make that big of a difference, each one is about .4 ounces.)

Annie - I hear that in Japan parents give their kids KitKats for luck at exam time. I don’t mind any excuse for candy.

Doug - I think it’s the wafer that gives it a little lighter touch than the Baci, which is really rich from start to finish.

Maggi - I’ve got my eye out for the Rafaello. They had some mixed boxes but I didn’t really want a whole pound of all the Ferrero stuff (but maybe I’ll see them on sale).

Helen - yeah, they’re mass market but I have to admit that they still look and taste pretty classy for something from a drug store.

A - Ferrero Garden? You mean I can plant these and a Rocher tree will grow?

  13. my husband is a truc driver and he saw in one o our newspapers an advertisement for a job for a truck driver.  did anyone see this advertisement and could you tell me where to go to find employment with ferrero rocher??

Comment by teresa hay on 2/24/07 at 5:18 pm

  14. 0 Trans fats??? We don’t know this for sure. The ingredients list “modified palm oil” which could be a tricky substituted phrase for “partially hydrogenated palm oil”!

I have eaten so many today already, then I finally realized this ingredient could mean trans fat! Ick!

I want to email Ferrero to ask, but they only have a snail mail address online that I could find.

Just be aware that these MIGHT contain trans fat afterall!

Comment by Corinna on 4/16/07 at 12:55 pm

  15. Corinna - well, they don’t have to declare trans fats if there’s less than .5 grams per serving.

Modified Palm Oil, as far as I’ve read, does not contain trans fatty acids. However, this modified oil may have its own host of ill effects, so all things in moderation. (I’m also wondering about this new stuff I see “fractionated palm oil” as well.)

These candies are truly delicious. that does not mean there the best quality i bought some from a local costc0 it turns out they were made in china and contained moth eggs, to bad i didn’t know that before i had 5 of them. you can tell if they contain moth eggs if they have white bumps on the outer shell.

  18. The name of the dark chocolat ones are “Ferrero Rondnoir”.  My husband got them as part of a mixed box at Walmart.  It had the regular ones, the dark chocolat and the coconut ones.  I don’t like dark chocolat but these are good.

  19. I had my first Ferrero Rocher candy the other day, and they are like little minature orgasms. I can’t wait to eat more and they just might help me quit smoking and gain some weight!!!!!!!

Comment by Stephanie on 10/15/07 at 12:51 pm

  20. Palm oil is liquid at room temperature so it has to be hydrogenated oil. It’s criminal not to say it on the label.
And peanut oil in nutella? Please. In the laboratory if you want a tumor to grow you inject it with peanut oil.
There are better chocolates without the deadly “oil”.

  23. Hey I was wondering if all you Rocher connoisseurs could help me with something.  A friend of mine just adores Rochers, and she was talking about a certain kind she really enjoyed and wanted to find again.  She said it was all Rochers, but there were different variations on them.  It’s not the Prestige or the coconuts, etc.  They were all hazelnut Rochers, just of different kinds.  Anyway, if anyone has any idea what such a set is called or where to find them, I’d really appreciate it.  Thanks!

  24. I am looking for a box of just the ferrero garden.  I have a friend who just tried one and i want to get her them for Christmas.  I can only find them in the gift sets and in assorted packages.  In case some are not aware of what those ones are, they are in the silver wrapper and they are cocoRafaellonut. They are different from the Rafaello.

  26. Hello, Rocher fans,
Yesterday I received as a Christmas present a heart-shaped box of Ferrero Rocher Hazelnut chocolates. My family and I each stuffed a whole one in our mouths and suddenly my daughter said,"Doesn’t it taste old?” We all spit it out except my hubby who had already swallowed his. I do not see an expiration date on the box or on the Ferrero website. Does anyone know anything besides the fact that now I know from going on the Internet that the heart-shaped box means Valentine’s Day. The question is, what year? Thanks!

  27. HELLO, ROCHER FANS

TODAY MY HUSBAND BOUGHT ME A BOX OF FERRERO ROCHER HAZELNUT CHOCOLATES FOR MY BIRTHDAY, SO I DECIDED TO SHARE THEM WITH MY KIDS, MY KIDS UNWRAPPED THEM AND EACH TOOK A BITE, I OPENED ONE ABOUT THREE SECONDS LATER AND TO MY HORROR THERE WERE THESE LITTLE FAT WORMS CRAWLING ALL OVER THE DELICACIES, IQUICKLY TOOK THE ONES FROM MY KIDS, AND THOSE WERE ALSO INFESTED WITH CRAWLERS, I GUEST I WONT BE EATING ANY ROCHERS AGAIN AND THIS BOX HAS A AN EXPIRY DATE WHICH SAYS BEST BEFORE 12 -08 -08.

  28. How do you make the tree out of Ferrero Rocher candy?

Comment by Nina Record on 12/21/07 at 8:38 pm

  29. I purchased Ferrero Rocher chocolates for 8 of my co-workers for Christmas.  Since I love them, I kept one for myself.  They are my favorite candy and the center is usually soft.  These seemed dried out and hard and did not taste like they usually do. I could not determine a last sale date.  The bottom has “13F 085A”.  Can anyone tell me when these were made or when the expire date is from those numbers.

    Thank you.

Comment by kylia bryan on 1/02/08 at 5:20 pm

  31. Kylia & Mrs. Naidoo - this is not the Ferrero website, I merely review products that I pick up. You should probably contact Ferrero directly to register your issues. (Though often the contamination of products with cupboard moth worms is a storage issue and happens at the store/warehouse, not at the factory.)

  39. My boyfriend purchased me a ferrero heart for valentine’s day and when I opened it there was rat shit inside. I saw this after he ate one and there were worms inside. I opened one and cut it in half and to my horror there was a fingernail in it! WTF~

Comment by Joesephina on 2/24/08 at 4:30 pm

  40. Joesephina - please refrain from using foul language on my site. This is about candy and should be safe for families to enjoy together.

Have you lodged a complaint with the place where purchased the candy or directly with Ferrero? What did they say?

Comment by Cybele on 2/24/08 at 5:46 pm

  41. Ugh, these comments are enough to seriously put me off Ferreros!  I’ve seen worms numerous times in different kinds of candy, especially Reeses.  I contacted Reeses about it, and they told me that it happens a lot to candy with nuts.  They said it’s a storage issue (on their end or on the grocery store’s end), and it’s inevitable to some extent, so try to get the freshest candy possible.  I still eat nutty candy, but I check it verrrry carefully.  smile And I don’t buy it on clearance ‘cause that means it’s old!

Comment by Lesley on 2/24/08 at 8:53 pm

  42. Hi, I have seen at the local Costco they have the golden wrapper kind and then there is a brown color with dark chocolate inside instead of a nut and then there is a silver kind which I think is called the Ferrero Garden--- What is in the Ferrero Garden kind?

Comment by Francis on 2/25/08 at 11:26 pm

  43. Francis, The Ferrero Garden are white chocolate with coconut and a soft creamy centre.

Comment by Adam on 3/10/08 at 11:00 am

  44. I love your Ferrero Rocher, but my husband does’t like regular chocolate. His favorite is white chocolate. I have not seen any of your candy made with white chocoalte. Please let me know if there is one out there, if not then I have one you can experiment with. Do a hazel nut in the center then have a thick lushious creamy carmel and finish it off with the light airy ending like the Rocher with the white chocolate instead of regular chocolate. Please let me know what you think....
    Thank you,

not much inside… We recieved 1 eggshaped boxes on

  52. To the people posting false information about Palm Oil - please, do a bit of research first. If you knew anything about palm oil, you’d know it has a lot of saturated fats, which is what enables it to remain semi-liquid at room temperature.

Also, as regards the claims of worms in candy: nonsense. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it’s just exceptionally unlikely. It would have been on the news.

And to the person TYPING IN ALL CAPS - stop it.

And people? Seriously? This is not the Ferrero Rocher site.
