Wonka Bar

Name: Wonka Bar
Brand: Wonka (Nestle)
Place Purchased: 99 Cent Only Store (the only place I’ve seen them in person)
Price: $.33
Size: 1.3 oz
Calories per ounce: 138
Type: Chocolate

The first time I ever saw (or even heard of) a Wonka bar was in the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (I read the book a few years later). In the movie Charlie wolfs down a husky bar that costs nearly nothing. While this bar might look bulky in the photo, it’s the size of a standard playing card. I think it’s a petite version, as I’ve seen others advertised for sale that are larger than 1.3 ounces. But I couldn’t beat the price of 3 for a dollar at the 99 cent Only Store. Even so, it looks like a Wonka bar should - substantial and slick. I bought two and both came out of the package looking so dang edible.

The bar isn’t even all chocolate. There are graham cracker bits in there and it reminds me of a poor man’s version of those Le Petite Ecolier cookies that are a graham cracker cookie with a molded chocolate top (embossed with a little schoolboy) The cookies smell like graham crackers (vanilla & cinnamon) and chocolate. The graham adds a nice crunch to the bar without too much additional sweetness.

Overall the bar is a little sweet, a little waxy. But cheap and satisfying. There’s something really compelling about the ‘nilla Wafer-like graham.

Interesting fact from package: bar was made in Brazil.

Rating - 6 out of 10

  1. I had one of these when they first came out a couple of years ago, it tasted good at first but then the artifical graham/vanilla smell kind of got to me.

I think if they made this one with a better quality chocolate it would be even yummier. Kind of like that Ritter Sport bar with the biscuit inside.

  3. God, this is one of my favorites. I don’t know why, but it is. I’d walk a mile for a Wonka Bar.

  5. I had it and wasn’t too impressed.  What I have been searching for was a candy bar that had Willy Wonka’s name on it back in the late 70’s early 80’s that had peanut butter in it but I can’t remember the exact ingrediants or name.  It was my favorite and I would buy one when ever I could but I can’t find any information on it since.

  6. I don’t remember a Wonka peanut butter bar, but I know that the Oompa-Loompas were peanut butter and chocolate. It was a large M&M;type candy, but a layer of chocolate and a layer of peanut butter all covered in a shell. They were regularly shaped but about the size of an M&M;Peanut.

Here’s a picture of the wrapper:

  7. We bought them in New York at Dylan’s - our kids are Wonka mad, they have memorised the dialogue of both Wonka movies with both Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp - they even do the Oompa Loompa dances! Chocolate bar was unexciting but the kids thought it was fantastic. Does anyone know somewhere where we can get Wonka bars in Spain? By the way, Wonka’s everlasting gobstoppers are a rip-off - they don’t last 5 minutes!!!

  9. I have been looking (for years) for the chocolate and peanut butter Oompas by Willy Wonka.  Nobody I’ve ever talked even remembers them, so i was happy to see someone on here did (and even supplied a photo of the wrapper).  At least I know I was not imagining it (lol).  When the (newer) Oompas were coming out I was so excited thinking the old Oompas were coming out again.  I was so disappointed to find out they were fruity Oompas (but still good).  If anyone ever finds the old ones let me know....PLEASE.

  10. I have also been looking for the choc and PB Oompas by Willy Wonka.  I so wish we could have them again - the PB M&Ms;are not the same.

  13. The Peanutbutter Chocolate Wonka Bar from the 70’and 80’s was called “The Wonka Crunch Bar”. It was a delicious mix of crunchy penuttbutter filling covered in milk chocolate. Unfortunately, they don’t make them anymore. Or, if they do I haven’t been able to find them.
