If you ever saw Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, you’ll know exactly what this is. It’s a candy, it’s a musical instrument! Though the whistle pops tooted by Dick Van Dyke were more like little recorders (ala a piccolo), these are slide whistles.
Chupa Chups, I must say, are awesome lollipops. First, they’re very flavorful. They’re well packaged (nothing worse than a damp piece of hard candy) and have the added bonus of a plastic stick. Why is this good? Well, I’m a drooler and don’t like the pasty mess that a paper stick becomes when I’m eating something like a Charms or Tootsie Pop.
There were four flavors in this package: Green Apple (unwrapped in the photo), Blue Raspberry, Watermelon and Strawberry. Basically, some of my least favorite hard candy flavors (my favorite Chupa Chups are the coffee ones). The texture of the candy is a little different, a little less clear and sparkly. This might be a manufacturing thing so that they can operate as whistles or might be the fact that I bought them at the 99 Cent Store.
Instead of just being a one note whistle, these have a hollow straw for the stick and there is a little sliding plunger that allows you to change the pitch of your whistling. They really work and they sound pretty good. However, as soon as you bite off the top or dissolve enough of the top, the whistling effect is gone. The flavor is nice, tart and highly scented. All change the color of your tongue. (Made in Spain.)

Mmm, whistle pops. Reminds me of my childhood. (Yeah, all of 8 years ago. *eyeroll*) I remember them with a bird on them though - different brand?

And the fact that they change the color of your tongue is higly important. My 5 yr old loves these and the first thing she does after eating a lollipop is check the color of her tongue!

Aw, I love the whistle pops! I forgot all about them… I’ll have to look and see if they’re at Dollar Tree.
I hear what you’re saying about the plastic stick being nice though. Whenever I tried to eat lollipops like a tootsie pop, they never lasted very long because I resorted to crunching them up because that paper stick turned into a mess. I am a slobberholic…

Chupa Chups are my favorite lollipops. The weird color is actually universal to Chupa Chups. They don’t have quite as many of the good flavors in the States as they have overseas. If you look at their web site you’ll see what I mean.

Ah! Cybele, you’ve taken me on another trip down memory lane! This is a candy I ate as a wee one (even though that wasn’t so long ago!)! Back when I made beautiful albeit brief music with these suckers, they were called Melody Pops (http://store.candywarehouse.com/melodypops.html). It seems Chupa Chups has decided to repackage them and do away with their toucan spokesperson (spokesbird?); maybe Kellog’s thought he resembled Toucan Sam too much and sicced their lawyers on Chupa Chups hehe
footnote: sicced is perhaps the most akward sounding word ever

I once knew a man with a wooden leg named Smith ...who ate these all the time!
That’s a shame they stop working as whistles so soon, but I love the idea of coloring your tongue. That’s always a dead giveaway.

I think I remember melody pops, and I think they’re still around (I don’t think they can really patent something like that).
Now I really want to get some more chupa chups ... I think they have them at Target ... they’re good for eating while writing.

Ah, Whistle Pops. What memories. The jingle when something like this.
“Yummy Whistle Pop. It’s a lollipop with a “whistle here” on the top. Orange, lemon, strawberry too. It’s the best tasting whistle you can listen to. Yummy Whistle Pop.”
The commercial sang this over and over until every child in American wanted one of these sugar on a stick treats. I remember buying them in the 70’s for 10 or 15 cents each. Those were the good ole days. Ha!!
Wow! I used to eat these all the time in my home country, but now i moved & i can’t find them anywhere :( They were yummy & fun !
I?m a spanish student that was in LA and have also buy the beautifull product “rainbow belts” in 7-eleven, I have seen also this product in Murcia in the shop “Zig Zag” but in other packaging, the product is the best that I have ever seen in the Candy category.
Adios-Jesus.
My sister and I made a video about Whistlepops. It’s an infommercial for a Whistlepops CD collection… a hilarious idea if I don’t say so myself (which I just did).
Enjoy!
