Twizzlers Chocolate Twists
The package is actually pretty, a maroon colored background with a big window to peek in at the shiny brown ropes. A little logo splash advertises that they’re made with REAL Hershey’s Chocolate. Turning over the package, the ingredients do list both chocolate and two different kinds of cocoa. I admit going into this that I have my doubts about how good these could possibly be. They’re attractive. They’re also soft (and don’t get as stale as the regular Twizzlers when you leave the bag open next to a fan for several days as I did in the Candy Blog Labs over the weekend). Instead of having pinched ends like Twizzlers, these are open ... perhaps with the addition of chocolate they’re not as pinchable? They’re a much softer chew, less like a plastic dough than Twizzlers. More like a brownie batter. But the chocolate flavor is watery, lacks any creamy component to buoy the fakeness of it. The only thing these are good for ... actually they’re fantastic for ... is as straws. Chocolate milk, plain milk ... even soy milk! They don’t have the crimps in the end, so they’re ready to use, right out of the bag. They do get a little soggy if you leave them in the drink, but a little nibble off the end and you’re ready to go. (I tried them with coffee, actually, not as good.) Think of the environment benefits! No more plastic drinking straws ... instead these are edible and probably biodegradable. (Though a lot more expensive, there were 14 straws in this package for $1.25 and $1.25 would probably get you a bag of 50-100 straws.) So there you go, good for decorating (try clipping them with scissors to make little “cogs” to decorate cupcakes or maybe a really chocolatey cupcake basket.) Related Candies

I luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurve these. But i never buy them. :/ one of my managers at work buys them almost every day, so I can just snag one off of her.
Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
I’m originally from Sweden, and your post on chocolate Twizzlers made me think of a candy from my childhood - caramel twists! Well, caramel strings - but they were available in licorice and strawberry as well. Does the US have caramel licorice? http://tinyurl.com/5ykbhm
The chocolate flavor in these reminds me of the fakey chocolate flavor in S’mores Pop Tarts, which I loved as a kid but won’t eat now because how rotten I feel afterwards. The Chocolate Twizzlers have the same fake chocolate taste, which sounds gross but I love it! And bonus - I can eat just one or two and not feel too bad about it.
I used to LOVE chocolate Twizzlers, when they used the old method. They were the same texture as regular Twizzlers, just chocolate. I do not like the new texture/shape at all.
They r the bEsT CaNdY i have evr eaten n a week!!!!!!!!!!

Chocolate Twizzlers used to look like the licorice kind - pinched ends - and had the same consistency too. For some reason, Twizzler recently changed the recipe to the version in your review. The old version was much, much better. For the life of me, I can’t understand why they’d change the formula to make the product worse.
i think that these were re-engineered to be use in that capaticy. ive had close ended ones not too long ago.
I loved the old chocolate licorice. This stuff is horrible chocolate play dough. I won’t even eat on piece.
YUUUKKKK!
Please, please bring back the old chocolate licorice. The new stuff is terrible. Why change the perfect candy. I will not buy the new stuff ever again!!!
You know, there was some soda related flavor of Twizzlers a year or two ago as I recall. I bought a package to go with a gingerbread house kit I had bought. They were either cola, rootbeer or Dr. Pepper, I honestly can’t remember which. They did not taste so spectacular though, so you probably didn’t miss much.
” The ORIGINAL Chocolate Licorice”
My family members always bought it for my birthday, holidays and any time they visited. I loved the stuff.
I am bummed out that they changed it.
I don’t like the new one - too doughy and the chocolate flavor isn’t as good.
BRING BACK THE OLD ONE - PLEASE….
thanks for the review.
I grew up eating chocolate Twizzlers-the real “brown licorice”. Why in the world would Hershey’s change such a standard and classic recipe? The new chocolate Twizzlers are not like the original in any way—taste, texture, nor appearance. It’s awful stuff. I ate two pieces at two different times then threw the rest of the bag out. Please Hershey’s, bring back the old Twizzlers!
Remember what happened when coco-cola changed the recipe to new coke? Well take heed Hersheys, your new formula for choclate twists is terrible bring back the old recipe before you lose customers!!!
I agree with most of the posters…..I hate the new formula….please please please bring back the old formula or at least have it as “original formula” and sell it alongside the new. I long for the old!
I am so happy to see that I am not the only one who dislikes the NEW chocolate licorice. I love love love the old version…& wish they would make it again. I used to buy a bag every time I went food shopping…......but NO MORE. Anyone know how we can write directly to the company??
The New Formula is HORRIBLE. I just bought a bag and they taste terrible. The original (or previous version) is the best and we used to buy tons of them. I will NEVER NEVER EVER buy another bag of chocolate Twizzlers until Hersheys brings back the old formula. Everyone needs to call them and write to them,
Ha! I googled chocolate twizzlers less chocolatey after thoughtfully consuming two of the new ones and giving them a good whiff. I could have sworn the older version at the very least smelled like chocolate even though it barely tasted like it. I thought it was just colored by memory but no, I see it realy is different. I had my doubts when it proudly said REAL HERSHEYS CHOCOLATE on the package…Hersheys doesn’t make real chocolate they make chocolate for the masses. Good but not chocolate.
I landed here much like poster 17, lild. I googled chocolate twizzlers not tasting the same…..
I’m sitting here at the computer eating a bag of them….not terrible, but certainly not the same. Seems like they are more ‘airy’....not as dense as before. Softer maybe. Not sure about the flavor but if I had to decide, I’d say less flavorable then before….
Since I’m originally from SE PA, we would go to the farmer’s markets there and find all sorts of flavored licorice, shaped exactly like Twizzlers. Way back (30 years or so), the only had black, red (strawberry), chocolate and green, which were mint. Now there are all kinds of flavors but not very good. If they look sort of transparent, it’s not a good sign:-)
Anyway, I’ve been hooked on these for years. Almost any kind of good red licorice….Swedish Fish and Red Hot Dollars, for example.
I see I am not the first to notice Twizzlers changed its formula. They’ve kind of got a Red Vines thing going on. I want my old Twizzlers back! The chocolate ones were my favorite candy!
Twizzlers, by far the majority of people writing in to you, be it here or on so many other web sites/blogs/forums/etc.. are very upset that you changed the flavour with the Chocolate twizzlers.
Question, how many will it take writing in to you to change your mind and go back to what the consumers want?
It is obvious, and so many people have written about it, that there is less twizzler now, and more air. The whole bag feels lighter, but I guess that saves on trucking costs. The new Hershey’s deal was surely lucrative for you, but if everyone stops buying your classic, most of them will NOT go back when ‘YOU’ finally decide to go back. The *Flourey* taste is synthetic and aweful. Hershey’s makes some good chocolate, but most of it i$ just watered down again and again a$ thin a$ they can get it (for $ome rea$on) and then sour milk is added to trick peoples mouths / thinking there is a bitter chocolate taste along w/the sugar. (Look it up)
Twizzlers, my Mother is fantastik; I have not the room here to tell you just how great she is or how hard she has worked- Long story shorter, one of the only things she has (had) to look forward to was reading a good book whilst eating her favorite snack/candy “Chocolate Twizzlers”. Now, (for $ome rea$on) you changed the great taste, to bland, flourey, medicine, smell of dentist office. HOW can we get you to change back? We are asking.
To sum up the “new and improved” chocolate twizzlers product in three simple words they would be:
chocolate play dough
But as others have already written, ‘airy’ and ‘flourey’ are even more accurate in describing the new formulation. Please bring back the ‘solid’ (and perhaps even slightly ‘stale’ for lack of a better word) chocolate twizzlers we all know and love **AND** buy!
Dave
Seriously, I hope someone’s paying attention to all of these posts. The new version sucks!!!!! The old chocolate licorice used to be my favorite! Now I can’t eat the new stuff! Yuck! I really hope they bring back the old recipe!!!
I on 2 attempts to complain to Hershey’s in regard to the new style Twizzlers ,which i agree are horrible there response was “We will forward your comments to our research department” and they then proceeded to send me a $2 dollar off coupon
I realize I’m in the minority on this one, but I don’t mind the new flavor formulation. The old recipe was just fine, so I agree that it didn’t need to be changed , but the newer version just doesn’t offend me the way it does others. Maybe I’m lazy. In any case, for those looking for the “solid” chocolate-type twist, I’ve noticed that some local and online candy stores carry versions of chocolate licorice in that style. They may not taste exactly like the old choc Twizzlers, but they’re not bad.
I agree with everone. Here in rural Virginia all we have is Walmart who carried the chocolate, as bad as they were. It was just discontinued, and replaced by sugar free. want to taste something even worse, try these, tastes like plastic, and if you eat a lot (more then 4 gives you the runs (as as we say, the Kentucky Two Step, you get two steps from the bowl). The manager said Chocolate was discontinued!I’d buy a case if I could find them.
What other major chain carries the chocolate?
I used to LOVE their chocolate twizzlers. Then they changed the look of them, and worst of all, the taste. Now, I refuse to ever buy them again, as long as they produce this kind. The taste is disgusting.
I love these things, just can never find them! Target used to have them, but not anymore. Not sure where to get the anymore!
My wife just loves thes chocolate twists. we were able to buy them at walmart whenever she wanted them but for some reason they do not carry them anymore. We have looked just about everywhere around here to find them with no luck. Can anyone tell me why it is just about impossible to find them now?
I am very upset that they changed the texture on the Chocolate. I want the old plastic texture back (like the strawberry flavored). I don’t like the new rubbery texture.
At least Coke admitted to their error and re-instated the Original Coke vs. Bankruptcy!
Wake up Hershey and do the right thing an make some money - re-release the Classic Chocolate Twizzlers and satisfy a very hungary group of candy lovers / buyers (as in money).
On a scale of 1 to 10 with #1 being the BEST:
Original Chocolate Twizzlers (fresh or stale) #1.
New Chocolate Twizzlers (garbage can) #10.
