Twizzlers Rainbow Twists

Twizzlers Rainbow Twists PackageI bought this package of the new Twizzlers Rainbow Twists as couple of months ago but I just had to wait for the crush of Easter to be over before I could open them up. They are stunning. The colors are vivid and opaque, a little less shiny than the regular Twizzlers.

I’ve always been fond of black licorice and find red licorice passably good. You know, if someone puts one of those tubs on my desk, I’ll eat it. For a while I was obsessed with weird twist flavors. There was a fruit stand I would stop at on the 126 somewhere between Piru and Fillmore that had Root Beer flavored vines.

When I think about it, non-licorice twists are one of the few flour-based candies out there (except for candies like Twix or KitKat that have actual cookies in them).

Each color of the Rainbow is a different flavor.

Grape (magenta) - a little tangy and pretty much tastes like a grape soda.
Blue Raspberry (aqua) - the color is kind of a turnoff for me (but I’m sure kids will love it), it has a little bitter taste to me as well, but a good raspberry scent and flavor to it.
Watermelon (green) - kind of strange. It tastes like watermelon smells but with other melons thrown in, like cantaloupe.
Lemonade (yellow) - just the zesty part of the lemon, without the tang that I might expect with something called lemonade. A little bitter aftertaste, but basically a winner as most citrus flavors are with me.
Orange (orange) - tastes like orange zest but pretty mellow, not quite creamsicle. No bitter taste like the lemon and thoroughly good.
Strawberry (light red) - tastes like a strawberry licorice vine. A little on the artificial side, but pleasant.

I was worried that the fake and plastic appearance of the candy reflected a lack of flavor, but they were all pretty punchy. But almost all of them had a weird metallic/bitter aftertaste to me. As a variety pack, I wasn’t fond of all the flavors, but this is pretty much always the way with mixes. I’m just not keen on them. I’m not alone either, the comments on this Slashfood post echo some of my sentiments.

While I had a good time photographing them (check out Sugar-Bliss-Gnome’s cool use of Twizzlers Rainbow Twists for cupcake decorations), I have no desire to finish any of the twists.

Here’s an alternate review that you might want to read (because it’s funny and does not endorse these).

  1. I definitely agree with the funky aftertaste - I personally prefer the Starburst Twists, but haven’t been able to find them in ages.

  2. I also agree on the metal flavor (not my favorite). I’d bought a pack of these from my office vending machine a few months ago, and found them so bad that I nailed the leftovers on my cube wall, as a warning to myself.

  3. The pictures are great! I too saw these in a vending machine at school and have wanted to try them.

  4. OH yes i’ve had these. I was attracted to the beauty of the package, but after eating 1 of each flavor, i threw it away :( not so good.

  5. I’m not going to try these because I like the cherry/strawberry and the chocolate twizzlers.

As for the pictures, I love them! smile

  6. These remind me of the Starburst Twizzlers that were out years ago. I used to like those. They were also assorted colors and flavors (to mirror the original Starburst flavors)except they aren’t quite as bright and they were a little more translucent/not completely opaque.

Maranda- I’m pretty the Starburst Twizzlers have been discontinued. A Google search seems to confirm this.

  7. Oh, and I’ve never tried these rainbow twists.

  8. Twizzlers are not really licorice, they feel and taste like they are made out of clay. Brachs used to make a good red licorice, but they stopped years ago. American Licorice is the only American made mass-manufactured licorice that doesn’t have that weird, greasy, “what did I put in my mouth” flavor and texture.

  9. I like these and was sad when they stopped selling them in my dorm’s vending machine. I really love the strawberry one! And extra fun to sip chocolate milk through the twizzler...yum. Made my milk taste all strawberry.

  12. Oh man!  I’m so glad I found this website!  I haven’t tried those Rainbow Twizzlers, but I’ve been having the worst craving in the world for like a year (literally!) for Starburst Fruit Twists!  I never realized that they discontinued them, until I wanted them!  Such a bummer!  Those things were sooo good!  Do these Rainbow Twizzlers taste like “licorice”?  I’m not a huge fan of licorice… :(

Comment by Maddie on 11/12/07 at 1:54 pm

  13. I wasn’t a huge fan of these, but I loved the commercial of the underwater Twizzler. He’s like “Oh.... A slippery mermaid!” and he’s chasing other ones. I wish I could find it. lol Oh well!

  15. I liked these.  The red and orange ones reminds me of Twizzler Twerpz, which was one of my favorite candies before they discontinued it.  I found it in my college vending machine and I enjoyed them a lot.  The people in the last link you posted are over-reacting…

  16. I stole a pack of these the day I saw them, and I was very excited. When I got home to taste my loot, I was very pleased as soon as I put them in my mouth but about 3-5 seconds into chewing… it became unpleasant. Not worth the risk of me getting sent to jail, or rotting my teeth out.

I’ll pass on these in the future. eating them; not stealing them- they are too pretty to not swipe! ^_^

  17. I brought a box of these for my boyfriend and I was really upset over how bad they tasted. They are the worst and I sepent $7 on a Costco size box so I am really upset. I wrote to the company to tell them that these have to be the worst candy in the world. We have been trying to find the Starbust Twist too. We also wrote them hoping they will bring them back.

  18. I too miss the Starburst Twists. I also contacted them to say how much I wanted them back on the shelf. I could eat a 12oz pack a day - I know I shouldn’t (but that’s a different matter lol)!
The Twizzlers Rainbow Twists are a good substitute, but I think the texture and the flavor of the Twists were better.
Everyone contact Starburst and let them know we want the TWISTS back!

  20. I say it tastes VERY VERY VERY good, but others in my household don’t care for the after taste. They say strawberry is still the best. But i can’t really taste an after taste.

  21. these are not as good as they look. they dont have enuff flavor, and get more waxy as u chew them. i really want the starburst twists back! they were the best! i could eat a costco size in a week. does anyone kno the address of the starburst company so we can write to em to get em back?

  22. I really love lovey it!!!

Comment by Khatija on 6/28/08 at 7:18 pm

  23. I think they are eye catching but nasty! The strawberry, cherry etc. are tollerable but none can compare to the now non-existent Starburst Fruit Chews. They had zing. They didn’t taste artificial and had those original fruity Starburst flavors we love. The texture and taste was sooooooooo much better. WHY DID THEY DISCONTINUE THEM???? Surely no one can think that Twizzlers in any form are a substitute!!!Does anyone know who we can contact to try and get them back???

Comment by Mary on 7/10/08 at 2:10 pm

  24. CORRECTION FOR #23

I was talking about the now non-existent Starburst Fruit TWISTS(not chews).

Comment by Mary on 7/10/08 at 2:13 pm

  25. Oh man those candies were delicious.  They were the only things I loved more than twizzlers. I think they were still around in 2001 but now they are absolutely no where.  I wonder why the best things get discontinued.  Like the Strawberry sundae at McDonalds, and my Pretty in Pink from Victoria Secret, and you guys get the picture.

  26. Yeah this candy is extremely digusting, I thought it was Starburst Twizzlers at first, but when I tasted one piece I threw the whole pack away.
How I miss Starburst Twizzlers, hey ya’ll lets protest so they can bring it back lol.

Comment by Marcus on 8/23/08 at 7:59 pm

  27. OMG, It surprises me how many people detest the rainbow twizzlers.
I can eat an entire pack in one sitting (I regret that I have ate many).
I love the texture, taste and aftertaste.  Yummy!

But, I am a twizzler junky.  I love ALL of them except for the ‘berry’ pullnpeel.  Those were not so good.
