Tootsie Tropical PopsIt’s hot. I’ve mentioned it before, and I know it’s summer ... but I’m guessing it’s hot wherever you are too and you’re wondering, “what sort of candy can I eat right now?”
But then I saw these at the 99 Cent Only Store. Tootsie has timed their new Limited Edition Pops rather well. It’s an assortment of five new flavors. Though they’re hardly tropical, as far as I’m concerned, they’re all nice flavors. What’s great about Tootsie Pops is that there’s a bit of variety in that single sphere - a tangy piece of hard candy and the soft, vaguely chocolatey center. They’re easy to hold and don’t get you all sticky and only 60 calories a pop. Pineapple - the one truly tropical flavor here, it’s peppy, tangy and nicely fragrant. Tangerine - hardly tropical and barely different from the traditional orange, but I’m a huge fan of tangerine flavors and this one is pretty nice and goes really well with the lamely chocolate Tootsie Roll center. Lemon-Lime - even less tropical because it’s not even exotic, but hey, it’s a nice sassy flavor. A little ordinary and not a very good combo with the Tootsie Roll core. Watermelon - I’m never much of a fan of watermelon. The only watermelon I care much for is Jolly Ranchers ... but this was nice and the Tootsie Roll goes oddly well with the rather bland and sweet flavor. Purple Punch - a rather nondescript punch flavor. Tangy, with some passion fruit notes but mostly a bland orangey. Tootsie Pops aren’t the perfect lolly - they’re a little inconsistent, there are voids in the candy that can make them sharp from time to time and of course the twisted wrapper doesn’t always protect them from more humid conditions. How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop? I dunno ... but the commercial sure was cute and memorable ... much better than this later commercial in the eighties.

Meticulously photographed and documented reviews of candy from around the world. And the occasional other sweet adventures. Open your mouth, expand your mind.

I’ve always wondered why they couldn’t do a little more quality control with these and make them solid without the air bubbles. I’ve scraped the roof of my mouth bloody on some of those edges by accident! I’d love if they were solid like Charms (not the bubble gum ones) with the tootsie inside.
I picked up a Tangerine/Mango Blow Pop at the gas station the other day. It was delicious!
I must find those. I really want to try the pineapple.
Now that I see the Mister Owl commercial, I just noticed that they implied that a majority of the world is “biters”, myself included. I thought of us as a minority, but hey, who am I to argue with a classic voice-over?
Other random thought: Did the kid who “forgot” to say Sour Apple suffer throughout his childhood for being known as the idiot who forgot the flavor of his blow pop? Oh, and I distinctly remember that commercial playing at least untill the late 90’s, if it isn’t still shown.
Ooohh! I want to try these so bady! Did you find them for sale in a bag or individually? Musttt......FIIIINNND!
I remember that BlowPop commercial… *shudder*
I wanted to try them something fierce until I saw the Mexico part at the bottom. I hope that there’s no tap water in there.
You were awfully hard on them for a 9, and some of us really like the odd chocolateyness of Tootsies. Kind of like Yoo-Hoo or Chocolate Soldier.
Julilla - yeah, someday I’ll get to see the factory and maybe that’ll explain it.
g - I’m not sure if they sell them separately (I’ve seen the watermelon, but that was announced as a new flavor) because I’d buy a barrel of the tangerine and pineapple.
Mad Cow - someone should track down those goofy commercial kids ... I’m sure VH1 is pretty close to putting an episode on the air.
Dave - I count myself among those who like the odd chocolateyness of Tootsies ... I just don’t think they taste much like chocolate.
Sera - they came in bunches.
When I saw “tropical,” I was hoping for banana!
I’m typically a biter but once a long lonnng time ago I counted. 352.
Jodi - oooh, banana would probably be pretty good!
Grommie - you’re much better than I am! I don’t think I’ve ever been able to count past 100.
Who sells the tropical tootsie pops besides the 99 cents only store? I’ve been looking for months now.
melanie - I just saw them at the Dollar Tree over the weekend ... if that helps. I’ll keep poking around and see if any other large chains have them. I know the watermelon is sold separately as one of their new standard flavors.
In the late 70 tootsie came out with the tootsie pop drops. the suckers without the stick. I would love to see this product make a comeback. At 43 years old I dont look real smart with a sucker stick hanging out of my mouth. I also miss the lemon flavor that was out in the 70’s. I wrote tootsie an e-mail about my desire to see these two products make a comeback and they were very good to write back and say “sorry not big movers off the shelf” Very fun website! Thanks
I just got some at Kroger in the $1.00 mix-n-match bin. (Found this web site because I was tying to find out what this purple flavor was.) I really like them!
ARGH! I still can’t find these! :-( Have you seen them anywhere besides dollar stores Cybele? I’ve looked in grocery stores, dollar stores, convienience stores, drug stores, target, walmart, etc. Nothing yet! *sigh*
Slee - I remember the Tootsie Pop Drops! Those were good.
AJJ - thanks for the info on the siting!
Sera - I think AJJ is onto something. Check the specials aisles, I now our Target has an area like that. However, I haven’t seen them anywhere besides the dollar stores.
can i make candy without the air bubbles? if yes how?
Waiting for ur reply
Shiv
hmm haven’t seen them at all in México. The only tootsie pops they sell are the cherry flavored ones with gum in the center.
I just got a response back from Tootsie Roll and they’re bringing back the Tootsie Pop Drops - I LOVED THESE AS A KID!!! They will be available for purchase this spring
Still no luck finding the Tropical Tootsie Pops but when I went to the Dollar store they had Wildberry Tootsie Pops. Anyone tried those yet?
I’ve tried Wildberry Tootsie Pops and love them. Got them at the Dollar Tree. Now they no longer have them and can’t find them anywhere. Wrote Mfg, and got no answer!
