 One of the things I forgot to tell you about from my Little Tokyo excursion is Hi-CHEW. I’m guessing it’s the Starburst of Japan. It’s a fruit flavored taffy - white on the outside with a corresponding colored center to the flavor. I tried strawberry. It’s very flavorful and has a good soft chew. However, because they’re made with millet jelly, they have an odd sort of latexy chew to them. It takes some getting used to, but it’s a nice texture. Rating: 7 out of 10

Is “millet” the mutton of the jelly world?
I remember these from a few years back as there was a huge Asian market close to my old house in Silicon Valley. I’ve never tried the Strawberry ones, but the Green Apple has always been a favorite of mine. Also, I absolutely adore your blog...I just love reading reviews of stuff.

I do need to get back to the Japanese market soon, I’d like to try the other flavors now. It really had a compelling texture, quite different than a starburst or mentos chew.
Yeah...I agree, the texture makes it unique on this one. When I first started chewing it, I almost thought it was gum! The other thing I like about them is the green apple flavoring. It’s somewhat creamy and not too intense or chemical like that of a hard candy. I wish I had had the pleasure of eating more.

Hichew is awsome! yeah i thought it was gum to… It almost smells like shampoo… I like apricot or um it might have been something ells… anyway I dont kow where to get any and I’ve only had 2. Where can you get some?
I randomly walked into a deli owned by a Japanese guy, and he recommended the Hi-Chews (I didn’t even know the name till I read it on your blog—just that is was Morinaga)
The green Apple ones are unbelieveable.
I hope eating too many of these isn’t going to kill me sooner!

I love hi-chews. I am eating them now and decided to google them. You can get them here in Hong Kong. I eat them all the time. My favorite is the blue kids one. I don’t know what the flavour is supposed to be though. I am eating lemon right now. I should bring some overseas.
I love your hi-chews! The strawberry yogurt ones are the best. Recently i had a friend go to tiawan to pick up her brother off his lds mission, His favorite candy was the hichews so she brought a pack back for everyone. Thanx for making the best candy ever!!

Millet is a grain, like rice, only smaller.
I love rice and other similar grain bases foods. Sticky rice cakes, candy and what not. Probably has something to do with being Chinese American and raised on good Chinese food, snacks, and delicacies.
And I love Hi-chews.

i wanted to know if HI chew contains geletin any type of hi chew flavor if it contains geletin and if it does is it vegeterian or not?
A friend brought these back for me from somewhere in Epcot, Disneyworld where they sell all kinds of Japanese candy.
All I can say is, I loved them so much I was actually slightly depressed when I found out I definitely wouldn’t find them anywhere around here.
Hi-Chews can be bought at any asian store...or most. i bought like a hundred of em and they taste good but there is a difference between the “Hi-Chew” printed ones nad the japanease ones. the ones with the the english words r smaller in shape and dont stick as much while the japanease ones do. i personally like the english labeled ones better
love the Hi-chews all around and just wondering what form of the japanese language is on their site. sure it’s not mongolian? just west of turkey??? It’s half the price there?
science fair prodject about strawburst
This is the most delicious candy I have ever tasted for a boy growing up in Utah. I found this candy on campus at UC Berkeley bookstore and i was wondering if anyone knows where else it can be found. I love the mango flavor. The texture is so interestingly chewy and unique much better than corn syrup filled american candy. If anyone knows where I can get it for cheaper than the internet let me know.

Places near sanfrancisco, or daly city. you can buy them at daiso near serramonte. they are very delicious. it’s like mamba but better.
I love Hi-chew! I picked them up at a Japanese store in LA on a whim. I went back for a dozen packs before heading back east. A friend of mine can get them from her parents store in Utah and I sure hope she can be come my regular supplier. Hi-chew is my new vice.
I am curious if anyone know the nutritional information for this wonderful little candy. My guess is I don’t want to know but probably should if I am going to be so addicted.

Nevermind, as I eat my Mango, Green Apple, Lemon, Grape, and Strawberry assortment lined up in front of mean I realized the health facts are on the side of the package.
They are genius, they are fully aware that a serving size is one whole package since it is impossible to eat any less than one whole package in one sitting. Try it, I dare you.
I have now resorted to treating myself like a lab rat in training. Hi-chew then task I need to complete, then Hi-chew, then next task.... repeat.
