Sour Patch Kids

Sour Patch Kids were developed in 1970s by a candy sales manager named Frank Galatolie who was chasing the sour fad. They were first Martians, to take advantage with the consumer fascination with all things space related. They were later changed to little children and called Sour Patch Kids (to capitalize on the Cabbage Patch Kids fad) and introduced in the US in 1985. A lot of the super sour items from that time period are long gone, so who could have expected that some sour sanded Swedish Fish would be so enduring? Sour Patch Kids are now made by Cadbury Adams in Canada.

Sour Patch KidsSour Patch Kids are a soft jelly candy sanded with a sweet & sour coating. The candies are supposedly in the shape of little frizzy haired kids. They look rather like little feet to me or maybe rabbits with very puffy tails.

Sour Patch Kids come in the traditional four flavors they always have: Raspberry (red), Lime (green), Orange (orange) and Lemon (yellow). Yes, these are also the same flavors as the Swedish fish array that Cadbury Adams makes.

They’re billed as “Sour then Sweet” and it’s true. Some folks like to suck the sour coating off, which makes them bitingly sour (with an odd salty tang to it as well) but I prefer to chew mine, to combine the sour and sweet and get a little flavor at the same time.

Though the flavors aren’t really that strong, as is the same with Swedish Fish, Sour Patch Kids are good whether they’re soft and fresh or hard and tacky.

I don’t buy them often, but they’re a good “keep me interested” candy, which is great for movies, traveling or a little munching while at work. I see adults eating them as often as kids, which is nice that there’s a sour candy that generations can share.

Note: there’s a little fad going on YouTube where kids collect the sour sand from candies like Sour Patch Kids, Sour Skittles or Pixy Stix and then snort it. Please, don’t do this. It really hurts ... you’re not gonna get high, but you’ll probably make some silly faces and your friends will laugh at you. There’s a reason our tastebuds are on our tongues and not in our sinuses. Sour Patch Kids are meant to be ingested orally ... not nasally. PSA over.

Sour Patch Kids contain no gelatin (they’re a jelly candy that uses corn starch as a jelling agent) and use all artificial colorings so they’re suitable for vegetarians. There’s no word in the label about gluten status.

  1. In May of this year, Cadbury rebranded all of the Allan’s (Sour Patch Kids, Swedish Fish, Berries, Fuzzy Peach, etc.) and Bassett (licorice allsorts) lines in Canada, virtually wiping out the name. They are now part of the Maynard’s line (the Wine Gum people, still part of Cadbury). It also meant introducing a bunch of new products (milk based gummies, orchard fruit, etc.) and hyping the addition of fruit juice (mainly apple) to the majority of the line (didn’t seem to change the flavour at all.) New sizes, new packages, the works!

  2. That pixy stix snorting thing is unfortunately not a new fad.  I remember kids doing that when I was in junior high school and I’m… er, well, I’m not in junior high anymore.  Ouch!

  4. I love Sour Patch Kids!  I have to say, though, I went to the movies a while ago and bought Sour Jacks thinking there were the same thing.  They AREN’T!  I was bitterly disappointed.  Sour Patch Kids are definitely the best.

  5. I like the Sour Patch Sour Fruit better than the traditional Kids. Same basic candy, but with more flavors and they are (of course) shaped like fruit.

  6. I demand a review of Sour Patch Watermelons! They are one of my favorites. In my opinion, much better than the “Kids.”

  7. Sour Patch Kids have been my favorite candy for decades, and all this time, I thought the red ones were cherry flavored.  Are you SURE they’re raspberry?!?

Anyway, I agree with Rachel that Sour Patch Fruit are even better.  Problem is they’re almost impossible to find.

  8. I recently was on a long road trip, and after eating half of a large bag of Sour Patch Kids all afternoon, tried eating some salt and vinegar chips.  Yeah, it was as painful as it sounds.  Please just give me a paper cut and pour lemon juice in it next time.  Ouch!

  11. All Sour Patch are Great!  For those of you looking for the Fruits they are in almost all Target stores along with sour.  Target actually carries all the different bags of Sour Patch (Kids, Wmelon, Fruits, Extreme - New, and Xploderz -New).

You should really review the two new one’s.  One is a 2 flavor high intestisty sour similar to the original.  The other Xploderz is a liquid center filled sour candy.  This is by far and away best Sour Flavored Soft Candy I have ever tried! Only seen it in Wa-Wa and Target though for some reason.  Hopefully it will be in more stores soon.

  15. I’m curious how you feel about the yellow #6 that’s used in sour patch kids (and many other candies). From the research I’ve done, it’s thought to have harmful effects to fetus’s, which makes me also wonder what we’ll find out it does to children (after the fact of course!). Have you had any other questions about this food coloring?

  19. All of the sour patch kids at my local movie theaters have been replaced with “Sour Jacks"… A poor mans excuse for Sour Patch Kids. I hate sour jacks with a passion.
