So Wonderful Sour

Name: Super Lemon Candy
Brand: Santa Trading Co.
Place Purchased: Mitsuwa Marketplace (Little Tokyo, LA)
Price: $1.49
Size: 2.64 oz
Type: Hard Candy (Sour)

Of course I’m a sucker for packaging. How could you resist this sassy lady with her cherry lips and surprised expression heralding “It’s So Wonderful Candy!”

What’s even better are the pictographic description on the back:

And is it ever sour. Taking them out of the individual packet, you’ll find a little round ball, about the size of a marble, distinctly yellow with a powdery dusting on it. Pop it in your mouth and you’re gonna definitely feel that “Oh! Super Candy” feeling. It’s sour. I’m serious. It’s painfully, numbingly sour.

After the salty, toxic waste sourness dissolves away, you’ve got a lemon drop. It’s a good lemon drop, smooth and without too many airgaps. It’s got good essense flavor to it, too. If you like the megasours that have been on the market for years without the novelty that goes with them, this is a solidly good sour lemon ball.

I’m unable to find much about the company that makes it, though it’s a common import and obviously packaged for the overseas market as much of the package is in English.

  1. I think you found your calling.  Your reviews are excellent.  I am getting a little concerned...I was wondering if there are any regualtions on this stuff at least food safety.  I have a hard time eating something that I can’t read.  Sure there are pictures but maybe there is a disclaimer in Japanese “For external use only” or “Not for Human Consumption”.  Just a thought.

  2. I ate tons of this when i was a kid. My classmates and I loved these and we used to buy them and compete on how long we could keep the sweet in our mouths cos it was super sour!

  4. There are actually two types labelled “Super Lemon Candy”. Same name, different packaging, different campany as well (not sure). The one i tried is a more matte package and has a 3 panel pictograph on the back instead of 2.

  5. I’m not sure I got old candy or what, however when I ordered these of Amazon and when they came they weren’t sour at all.  They might have just been really old or an inconsistent batch.  It they’re usually sour where would be the best place to get them when they’re at their freshest.

  6. Watch out for the So Wonderful “Super Cola” flavour - it’s a favourite of mine!  Similarly sour & sweet.

  7. This is one candy I think almost all Singaporean kids would have tried and loved before. I think this is THE sweet that started me on my sour path of no return… Haha. Unfortunately I haven’t really seen those around these days, and of course, I swear that they used to make it better when I was a kid.
