Sno-Caps, Goobers & RaisinetsIt’s summer movie season. I’m not much of a movie-goer, mostly because I don’t like to go out (I have this same problem with vacations), but I do enjoy movie cuisine of the sweets variety. (Nachos and hot dogs do not belong at the movies ... those are ballpark foods.) Today I have three classics. Sno-Caps were introduced in the twenties by the Blumenthal Chocolate Company. These are just tiny chocolate chips with a coating of white nonpareils. The combination of the mellow semi-sweet chocolate with the sweet crunchy white dots makes them ideal for munching for two hours. The box encourages me to “Mix it Up! with Popcorn” but I’m kind of a sweets purist at the movies ... just candy, thanks! The semi-sweet chocolate isn’t terribly smooth, but it has a good chocolate flavor to it and a little dry and bitter hit towards the end. Of course the sweet little sugar spheres mellow that out pretty quick. The crunchies encourage me to chew these instead of letting them melt. But sometimes I like to let them all melt in my mouth so I’m left with a mess-o-nonpareils for some real crunching. At the very end things can get a little messy with the orphaned nonpareils at the bottom of the box ... or the bottom of my purse if the box isn’t sealed completely. A quick tip of the box and I have some good crunching. If I miss my mouth, well, luckily they’re rather inert. (Note: Sno-Caps semi-sweet chocolate now contains milkfat, so is not suitable for vegans.) Rating: 7 out of 10 Goobers came along in 1925, though the idea of chocolate covered nuts had already been around for centuries (though not very affordable until the turn of the century). To me Goober was a character on The Andy Griffith Show. It wasn’t until years later I found out that goober is actually slang for peanuts. (That was about the time that I started seeing Goober from Smuckers on the store shelves (peanut butter and jelly in the same jar). Goobers are one of those easy to eat candies that don’t get you all hopped up. There’s a lot of protein in there from the nuts, so they don’t get my blood sugar all in a tizzy. The chocolate is very sweet and not terribly smooth, but with the crunch of the nuts in there I rarely suck the chocolate off, so it’s not very noticeable. My only complaint with Goobers is that sometimes the peanuts aren’t very good. It could be that I’m getting an old box or the peanuts quality control isn’t that good. A bad peanut is, well, bad. There was a jingle for Goobers & Raisinets which has always stuck in my head (probably from around the same time as the Mounds & Almond Joy song). Goobers, Raisinets Rating: 7 out of 10 Raisinets were the third part of the movie candy puzzle, they were introduced in 1927. The idea of Raisinets had been around for years, often sold as part of a mix of panned nuts and dried fruits known as “Bridge Mix”. These are nicely sized raisins, soft and chewy, sweet and tangy. The chocolate, on the other hand, is super sweet, slightly grain and rather bland. As a kid I pretty much detested Raisinets. I eat them far more often now, but unless the chocolate is really good, I’d rather eat raisins. Rating: 5 out of 10 Nestle has a strange website to promote these candies, called Nestle Classics which emphasizes them as good movie candy. It’s kind of odd, since the only candy in their “Classic” lineup that they originated is the Nestle bar. All the other bars and candies in the array were acquired from other companies (Chunky & Oh Henry). So, what are you eating at the movies this summer?

Meticulously photographed and documented reviews of candy from around the world. And the occasional other sweet adventures. Open your mouth, expand your mind.

My mom always got the giant tootsie roll for her movie snack as a kid. She said it lasted her the whole film!
I think you’re being a little harsh on the Raisinets. I’m pretty sensitive to overly sweet chocolate, and they just don’t hit me that way.
Have you had the dark Raisinets? They’re not dark enough.
You have inspired me to try Sno Caps, since I’ve never tasted them before. I didn’t quite know what they were so I never got them. I agree on Goobers having some bum peanuts, quite a few of them. I don’t get them because of that.
My fav movie snacks are the mini butterfingers, milk duds, and gummy bears. yum! also bunch-a-crunch is great when combined with popcorn…
You might like the dark chocolate Raisinets more. They’re not really dark but they have a better chocolate flavor than the regular Raisinets.
I don’t like chocolate covered raisins, never have, somehow I think i’ve always felt it was a cheat to have something healthy inside chocolate. Plain raisins yum, plain chocolate yum. But not together.
mmm! i love sweet (candy) and salty (popcorn) combos. but for movie going i like taking red vines (NOT twizzlers) and/or reese’s pieces. odd eh? i mean i love all the other stuff gummi bears (also good with popcorn) but everyone’s got their own tastes ^^ ew @ raisinets btw
Count me in among those who never liked Raisinets.
yeah Sunny! i love RedVines but not reese’s pieces. i’d take a bite out of a red vine, then a handful of popcorn.
i actually like raisinets. probably bkus my mom always used to make trail mix with them.
Popcorn, always at the movies!
Never, ever candy - never!
I was SO lookingfor sno caps and goobrs this weekend at Target- to no avail. :(
Oh my god, sno-caps. I had totally forgotten these even existed. I live in Germany and actually can’t remember what those were called here. I have no idea if they’re still around either, haven’t had them since I was a kid. But I used to love those.
Sno Caps are great with Dr Pepper. It gets extra fizzy when the soda hits the non-pareil remnants in your mouth.
I like the idea of Goobers, but I’ve never had a good box of them. I usually buy other brands of chocolate nuts instead.
For some reason, I love to eat Milk Duds at the movies. I never eat them any other time. I like the way they are so chewy, they last a long time.
My favorite movie treat is P-Nuttles!! Red Vines and Skittles are also good movie snacks. I don’t bring chocolate because I mow through it too quickly - usually before the movie starts - leaving me with two hours of no candy…not to mention a sugar buzz, and then a sugar crash!
Muddy Bears! Muddy Bears!! Muddy Bears!!! These chocolate covered gummy bears are my favorite movie-going treat. I’ve only ever found them at the movie theater and sometimes at Blockbuster but I’m kinda glad for it because I have to eat the whole box in one sitting.

wooooo—ooo—ooooo.
I love putting plain M&Ms; in my popcorn bucket…they get ooey gooey inside and improve the buttery, salty popcorn even more! For those of you who aren’t familiar with the joy, just try it next time you’re at the movies!
Sera - it would have to be a GIANT Tootsie Roll for mine to last a whole film.
The Velvet Blog & Jess - I did try the dark ones last year and did like them better than the milk ones. But I’ve been spoiled by the “gourmet” ones from Trader Joe’s for many years.
Julilla - funny that you mention not knowing what Sno-Caps are. Amy (the one who spits things out) was over on Saturday and didn’t want any when I offered them ... she thought they were licorice.
Sunny & Andrew - my husband feels the same way about Raisinets ... and raisins in general.
Emily - because everyone was mentioning Red Vines I got them for the movie on Monday. They were very fresh, which always makes them smell like coconut to me.
Joanne - really? I really don’t like popcorn at movies, but maybe that’s because it’s too noisy.
Liz - that’s just weird, it’s movie season! (Maybe they hid them over by the DVDs?)
Gemma - there are other kinds, some are bigger and more “disk-like”. I know there’s a brand of them in the UK but I can’t figure out the name either.
Dave - I totally agree on the bad nuts. Brach’s actually makes some good Bridge Mix that goes well at the movies. There was a theater I used to go to that let you bring in outside candy (there was a candy shop right next door) and I’d get the Bridge Mix (carefully picking out the Brazil Nuts).
Lisa - I tried the Junior Caramels, hoping that they’d be like that, but they just don’t have that long chew to them.
leigh - I’ll try just about anything covered in chocolate.
Sara - I love Milk Duds and don’t even mind when they’re stale. Unfortunately they stopped using real chocolate on them and I haven’t tried the new mockolate ones.
Lesley - I love PNuttles now, but I haven’t been able to find them very reliably. I got ONE bag on sale at Ralph’s ... it was the last one and I haven’t seen them since. (I got them for the Peeps Mashup but ate them in the car.)
Yvette - I haven’t tried the muddy bears. Consider them on the list!
desertwind - hah! I need to review those too!
Concetta - I’ve always been a sucker for M&Ms; that are hot from being in the car in the sun. They get really slick and greasy ... the little shells just split apart upon hitting the tongue. Sigh.
I love the dark chocolate Raisinets. Actually, anything dark chocolate is preferable to milk chocolate for me these days.
Glad you (mostly) enjoyed them. I always feel like a weirdo trying to give candy away to my other friends, but I know that you are usually game.
Thanks for posting the notes about the old Blumenthal items. It’s nice to see reminders out there that they go back long before Nestle’s name was on the boxes.
In the interest of history, the name of the company actually was Blumenthal Bros. Chocolate Company. My grandfather was one of the brothers. The factory, or most of if, still stand in NE Philadelphia, although it’s falling apart.
I cant believe that there exist so much more bars then the ones they sell here in Holland.
We only have: twix, bounty, mars, nuts, curlywurly in stores.
This has to do with the fabric that makes this kind of bars forces the stores to have no other bars.
Im so borred of our bars, ....
Bang, bang, bang! Boom, boom, boom!
Still can’t find Goober at Target, looked just yesterday
