Snickers Shrek

ShrekersHere are some things I know: Novelty is not necessarily a good thing. Being gross does not make it tasty. Shrek is funny.

I got an email from Marvo at The Impulsive Buy alerting me that there were some new Snickers and M&Ms to celebrate Shrek the Third. I spotted the bags of minis at Target but just couldn’t bring myself to buy a whole bag, so I was happy to see the single bars at 7-11 the following week. The wrapper has a little drawing of a cross section and an arrow pointing to it with the words With Green Shrek Filling - Same Snickers Taste” next to it.

Can I just say that I’m wondering if they include smell in that?

It smelled a bit like feet to me. Perhaps Shrek’s feet, I can’t be sure, as he’s an animated character and likely smells more like pixels or ozone. Maybe “feet” is too strong. Latex balloons ... yes, that’s it: chocolate, peanuts and rubber gloves.

It tasted the same as the regular Snickers ... but perhaps a little peppery. (It’s not Wasabi that makes it green, is it?)

I’m just glad they didn’t cover it in a green “white chocolate.” A Snickers bar without the green filling gets an 8 out of 10. This one only gets a 7 out of 10. Until it goes on sale at five for a dollar later this year.

The other movie tie in are Ogre-Sized M&Ms Peanut Butter ... which might be similar to the M&Ms Peanut Butter Speck-tacular Eggs. Can anyone confirm that?

  3. You’re right on about the Shrek M&Ms;. They’re pretty much the same as those easter ones you reviewed. And quite tasty, if I do say so myself!

  4. I am sorry as this a little off subject, but i didn’t see a place to add my question.
    do you review non-commercial candies?
as a webmaster, i recently had to photograph chocolate hockey pucks that are able to be engraved.
i don’t like photographing food and after 6.5 hours -i got the following shots:

  5. I think they should’ve made the chocolate coating green.  That would’ve been something interesting and I would’ve told everyone that it’s a vegetable Snickers.

  6. my first reaction upon seeing this was “oh my gosh it’s green…”  kids must be the target for this bar.  they like weird looking/tasting food (think harry potter inspired candies).  for my part, i think pistachio and maybe green tea are possibly the only green things that should be paired with chocolate.

  7. But…what is the green supposed to be?  First I thought it was pistachio but I guess not?  It’s just some random green dyed filling?  What is the point?  They should have put something interesting into it, not just dyed it.

  8. ahh this is scary. I feel like they could have promoted shrek in some other way… Green is too weird!

  10. yes, the shrek m&m’s are similar to the easter ones.  these are not speckled, rather, they have regular looking shells and a few ogre green colored ones, too.

  11. I ate one today. I think they taste and smell just like the regular snickers. The green is a cute idea. Just like purple-colored ketchup.

  12. The green Snickers does not taste the same as a regular Snickers.  It wasn’t quite nasty, but I won’t be having another.  I think the “7” rating was very generous.

  14. Let’s just say… if you didn’t pay attention to the wrapper before you threw it away it can come as quite a shock to look down at the last bite and see the green.  After hours of pondering ‘why’ my snickers was green (and having thrown out the wrapper) it dawned on me (or I should say I crossed my fingers) that it was likely a Shrek marketing idea.  Here’s a thought… Next time just make the wrapper green.  wink  At least then I might have eaten the last bite.

  15. My huband bit into one the other day, not realizing that it was a Shrek promotion.  He just saw the green and freaked out and spit it out.  He thought it was rotten.  He started to freak and feel sick when his friend read the wrapper and told him that it was a Shrek thing.  He continued to eat the Snickers but he said it just wasn’t the same.  LOL!

  16. This was funny and I thought I would share the story. I am sitting at work and a friend at worked emailed someone else and told us about her sister in law getting a snickers bar with green stuff. The girl almost died because she did not know about this candy having this inside. She threw the candy away but her friend sent us a picture of the candy and its does her green stuff in it. What a way to promote candy. But please let people know

  17. I friend of mine was eatting a Snickers when he told me that the Snickers was green. I said, Are you sure that just didn’t come off your green teeth! LOL

  18. I just about had a heart attack when I saw that my candy bar was green.  Who reads the label of a candy bar they eat all the time?  I wish they hadn’t done that.  I thought it was like the oldest snickers bar ever or something and I was gonna die.
And the green is actually yellow 5 and 6 and blue 1 and 2, banned in some countries.  They’re made from coal tar.  Who the hell wants coal tar in their food?  I need a Whole Foods.

  19. I may, after 35+ years, never eat another Snickers bar as long as I live.  If I wanted to eat green food, I’d dig to back of my refrigerator or to the bottom of the bread drawer.  Off with their heads….the marketing folks @ Snickers that is!

  20. I bought this yesterday and bit into the thing… in fact, I ate half of it and then saw it was green. I thought it was aged (but not to perfection).

    Completely gross. Green nougat!

Good thing these weren’t made in China, or they’d have to execute another Minister of Food.
