Skittles Chocolate Mix

One of the exciting new products teased at the All Candy Expo is the new Chocolate Mix Skittles. This is a permanent flavor addition to the Skittles line which already includes: Original Fruit, Tropical, Smoothie Mix and Wild Berry.

The Chocolate Mix has five flavors: Vanilla, S’Mores, Chocolate Caramel, Chocolate Pudding and Brownie Batter.

I was pretty skeptical. First, Skittles are known for a lot of flavor being packed into that candy shell. Second, one of the best things about chocolate is the whole experience of both the meltiness (fat) and the cocoa solids (flavor), there’s no way they could get that in here. Third, two of the five flavors in this mix were introduced in the Ice Cream Skittles last year and they were (chocolate and vanilla). I detested the chocolate ones ... and here’s a whole bag designed around that?

Chocolate Mix SkittlesVanilla (cream colored): light and sweet, like a vanilla taffy.

S’More (pale caramel colored): slightly tangy candy coating, a good toasted flavor to it ... not a trace of chocolate, but a little graham/cereal taste to it. Pretty good. Very sweet.

Chocolate Caramel (caramel colored): the prettiest color in the bag. A nice sweet chew with a little burnt sugar note to it and maybe a trace of cotton candy, but I wasn’t catching any chocolate at all.

Chocolate Pudding (dark brown, almost purple colored): vaguely chocolatey, mostly sweet, kind of like cocoa towards the end of the chew.

Brownie Batter (darkest brown): fudgy and kind of like a cookie all at once, which I guess is why it’s called brownie batter. It doesn’t have the complete chocolate flavor, more on the cardboard side and not nearly as satisfying as a Tootsie Roll.

I know everyone’s really excited about these, but I don’t like them much. They’re watery, not vibrant or really engaging my tastebuds. I know that the Carnival Skittles were similar in that they diverged from the intense fruit-ness that Skittles are known for, but these just didn’t have that zing that even they were able to muster with their delicateness. Quite a few folks have stopped by my office to try the new stuff I brought back. They try them, but no one’s come back for more.

The good news is that they contain no dairy and no gelatin ... so as long as you’re okay with a dash of hydrogenated oils, these might be the Skittles for you! The package also states that they are “Gluten Free.”

These should be available in stores later this year, post here if you’ve spotted them in the wild!

  1. And why in the heck would they include a “vanilla” flavor in a “chocolate” mix?

Comment by Scott on 9/26/07 at 9:50 am

  2. Hah! Good point, Scott. Perhaps it was too insipid to be called white chocolate?

I know I will be disappointed, but I still look forward to trying these. I think the hunt for new products is part of the excitement.

  6. what would we do without you to take the candy bullet for all your fans & readers!  still, i’ll probably try these out if i run across them.  regarding the carnival flavors, i really liked the “green slushie” flavor-- very lime-y.  the rest were pretty bad, though.

  7. See, the sound of these didn’t rock my socks at all.  No idea why these are all eagerly anticipated out there.

Comment by Heidi on 9/26/07 at 2:08 pm

  8. These never sounded very appealing to me.  If I want chocolate, I’ll eat chocolate!

Comment by Alicia on 9/26/07 at 3:23 pm

  9. These sound like bad version of Jelly Belly’s JBz. I think I’ll stick with those. I love your reviews of all the new candy!

  10. I just tasted these - as the result of the generosity of a fellow candy lover.  Is it just me, or do they taste like (the smell of) scratch and sniff stickers?  Especially the Brownie Batter one. I’d rather eat a Tootsie Roll, and I don’t even particularly love Tootsie Rolls.

  11. Just got a bag at the Wal-mart in Epping, NH. Big thumbs-down here from a serious Skittle fiend (original only!).

Comment by Bruce in NH on 1/06/08 at 5:54 pm

  12. I had to try these when I saw them in the vending machine… I was not impressed.  They taste just like the filling of a chocolate tootsie pop. Overall, gross…

  13. THAT WAS THE MOST DISCUSTING THING I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!!!

  14. Did i mention that they were gross?

Comment by Katie on 1/31/08 at 1:56 pm

  15. I have to say, those were the most disgusting things I have ever tasted in my life. The texture was weird, the flavor was worse. Who ever thought it would be a good idea to mass produce these all I have to ask is, did you ever actually try them??? Seriously, absolutely revolting!!!!!

Comment by Kym on 1/31/08 at 1:58 pm

  16. The flavors are actually varying degrees of pain through suffering. Surprisingly, the lighter the color the more hate is used as the primary ingredient. Safe to say you should avoid at your own peril.

Comment by Different Aaron on 1/31/08 at 2:00 pm

  17. I just tried them today, found at our local HEB grocery store, and was not impressed either.  I only liked the brownie batter because I thought the chewy texture fit well with an actual brownie bite.  But I agree with the rest, I’d rather eat chocolate.  I don’t really like tootsie rolls either, so an added disappointment.

And, I couldn’t put my finger on what they smelled like until I read Joanna’s post: scratch-n-sniff stickers for sure!  Worth trying for the adventure but definitely not a big bag. (Like I sadly bought.)

Comment by Adrienne on 2/02/08 at 12:45 am

  18. I just saw these in the vending machine in our downstairs lobby.  Even though I was looking for a chocolate fix, I just couldn’t bring myself to buy a bag of those.

Regular or sour only for me.

  19. I tried them and they taste like Play-Doh. Everyone of them was disgusting!

Comment by Devin Popenfuss on 2/06/08 at 12:31 pm

  20. Found! At the University Center shop at Wesleyan. I was psyched until I started eating them - although I have to say I’m pretty into the Brownie Batter which, if you chew it for long enough, does achieve a nice cookie like quality. The chocolate pudding is seriously awful, and they are all too SWEET besides vanilla. rats!

Comment by Andrea on 2/07/08 at 11:53 am

  21. also, what is the deal with the purple color in brownie batter? weird.

Comment by Andrea on 2/07/08 at 11:54 am

  22. I saw.  I bought.  I tasted.  I tossed my cookies.

Seriously...I had hoped it was real chocolate.  The flavors are inadequate for my chocolate cravings, and the texture is exactly like skittles, which is not what one looks for in chocolate.  God, strike me down!  Or at least, give me chocolate covered crickets!  At least it’ll be real chocolate.

Comment by Steve on 2/07/08 at 4:16 pm

  23. I just saw the Chocolate Skittles for the 1st time at Wal-Mart. I would have bought a bag for my kids( they love Skittles!)but they were sold out. I wouldn’t have tried them because like Alicia said, “If I want chocolate, I’ll eat chocolate.”

Comment by Suzanne on 2/12/08 at 1:45 pm

  24. I found them at Wal-Mart here too about a week and a half ago- now I see that they have a pretty large display in front of the registers to advertise them (possibly for Valentine’s Day?). Umm… interesting, but honestly if I want chewy low grade chocolate (and that’s what they felt like to me) I’ll stick with Tootsie rolls (especially the vanilla ones- yum)

  25. My son (8 years old) is allergic to peanut, milk, eggs.  Skittles are on his safe list and we have just found the Chocolate mix.  We have not yet tried them and after reading the above comments, not sure if I will even let him (!!) but he has never had real chocolate (there are no safe candy bars w/o any of the three above!) so he may like these - I have made from scratch brownies and cakes using Hershey’s cocoa so he has had chocolate.  Any others with food allergies who have tried these?

Comment by LuAnn on 2/20/08 at 6:13 pm

  26. CHOCOLATE SKITTLES ARE LIKE FEAR FACTOR IN A BAG!!!!

Comment by Megan on 2/23/08 at 10:26 pm

  27. I do agree, why a vanilla in a “chocolate” mix.  But, I do think they are YUMMY!!  Brownie Batter is my fav of them all.

Comment by Kat on 2/27/08 at 2:58 pm

  28. yes! I’m not the only one who thought they were knawing on play doh! I didn’t like them at all, but the least offensive was vanilla. cruel, cruel irony…

  29. I’m actually eating some right now, for the first time!

I have a MAD love for skittles.

    I love these!

  30. I just picked up a pack of these at CVS today.  I still haven’t opened them [I’m partly dreading the experience], but I found your review/preview to be very informative.

  31. I think many people have been too hard on these candies.  I was quite geeked when I saw them!  I promptly bought and ate 2 packages, and then bought a 3rd and 4th so that I could bring them to my friends, so they could share my joy.  Don’t be turned off to them, just because they sound strange at first.  I find that their kind of a fusion between tootsie roll and jelly-belly. smile

Comment by Josiah on 3/04/08 at 10:15 pm

  32. Not worth your money. I couldn’t even complete the bag because they made me gag. They all taste like generic Tootsie Roll-imitation flavored lip gloss. Whoever came up with these must have been high/drunk.

Comment by Jade on 3/07/08 at 1:46 pm

  33. Well, call my crazy...especially after reading all the negative comments.  I thought when I first saw them - YUK, but I had to buy a bag, being a Skittles lover.  So here goes...... I love them! Hope they stay around and that they will be available in the full size bag soon.

Comment by Donna on 3/12/08 at 5:18 am

  34. I just saw a full-sized back of them at a Valero gas station yesterday.

Comment by Erin on 3/12/08 at 7:38 am

  35. I not gonna lie but this product is pretty nasty. I dont know how some people say they are good, maybe they havent tried real chocolate. These taste nothing like chocolate or even close, it seems like they were filled with some nasty flavors. I just want to know who put this product on the mass production that is the question? Who were the people that decided that this product would sell. Well I cant really judge, but if you want something that tastes like chocolate just buy chocolate its that simple.

Comment by Andre on 3/12/08 at 5:04 pm

  36. Tastes like fake plastic doggie doodoo coverd in that smell that they use for scratch-n-sniff chocolate. FAIL.

Comment by issafly on 3/18/08 at 12:27 pm

  37. I was so excied to try these when I found them in a CVS but they were horrible. Chocolate Pudding was the only acceptable flavor, Brownie Batter may as well have been made of dirt. None of them really tasted like what they were supposed to taste like, except maybe the pudding and what’s worse is the brownie and pudding are so similar in color, I had a hard time avoiding the brownie. I couldn’t even make it through half the bag.

Comment by Olive on 3/29/08 at 9:49 pm

  38. they were pretty good to me..... with the exception of an upset tummy LoLz

  43. I and my coworkers thought these were quite interesting and tastey. I came to this site to look for more.

Good Job Skittles! And for those who like tootsie rolls, the coating on these adds to the flavor… smile

  44. I belive they should use the fruit flavors with a chocolate center.

Comment by stan on 4/16/08 at 7:44 pm

  45. i liked the flavor of nearly all.  the worst was the chocolate caramel.  the other flavors seemed to be nearly right on the mark.  seemed like they had way too many vanilla in the mix, though.  biggest gripe, they were too darn hard to chew.  could only eat a few in one sitting.  that was even after sitting at room temperature all day.

Comment by leo on 4/16/08 at 7:53 pm

  46. xD I found a bag at the local 7-11 store.
I tried em and there not to bad but they clould have been better :/
the Caramel ones were ok and those seemed to be the only ones I enjoyed.

Comment by Nova on 4/20/08 at 4:26 pm

  47. These are really good! ^^ Finally, something made by the Skittles (Mars) company that doesn’t contain gelatin. Perfect for me ‘cause I have not had anything chewy in a while. My other friends eat chewy candy all the time while I sit around and watch… (I’m vegetarian) The flavours taste alright, but if they actually put some real cocoa flavour into it and not that fake stuff, I think it will taste better. =]
