Skittles Carnival Flavors

imageThis bag of Limited Edition Carnival Flavor Skittles absolutely smells like a carnival midway: a combination of waffle cones, cotton candy and freshly shaken lemonade.

I was a little peeved that I couldn’t find these in a single-serve bag, but at least they were on sale. While many chocolate based products in large bags are only 11-14 ounces, Skittles still come in a full pound bag.

Skittles Carnival Flavors

  • Cotton Candy (light blue): cotton candy barely qualifies as a flavor. It’s just spun sugar. Some places give it a light strawberry or raspberry flavor, but often I think it just tastes like the color pink. This is sweet and has that light touch of burnt sugar and floral, strawberry sweetness ... all kissed with blue food coloring.
  • Bubble Gum (pink)  - stunningly faithful to the flavor of real bubble gum, sweet and disconcerting, as I thought I could just keep on chewing but eventually it disappeared
  • Candy Apple (light yellow) - candy apples are another one of those things that isn’t quite a flavor. The candy shell on an apple is usually just boiled and colored sugar. I guess the flavor here is cotton candy touched with a little bit of tangy apple.
  • Red Licorice (red) - I’ve never been quite sure what the flavor of red licorice is. I suppose it’s a very mild berry (strawberry and/or raspberry). It’s all sweet with none of the tangy bite of berries.
  • Green Slushy (light green) - this is more than lime. It does taste kind of like Mountain Dew (or what I remember MD tastes like, I haven’t had one in at least 15 years. It’s lime with a bite of bitterness or key lime perhaps. It’s actually really good. I like it better than a regular lime Skittle.
  • The only strange thing about all of the flavors is that the candy shell was every so slightly tangy when first placed on the tongue. While that’s fine for Red Vines and Slushie, it didn’t really belong on the Bubble Gum and Cotton Candy. I’m wondering if that sour bite is the ascorbic acid that gives each serving of Skittles its 45% RDA level of Vitamin C.

I didn’t care much for the extended flavors I reviewed last week, but I found myself happily munching away on this bag of Skittles without picking out particular flavors. Also, the flavor combinations pretty much all work with each other. Perhaps Slushy and Candy Apple are my least favorite combo but Cotton Candy and Bubble Gum are quite a nice mix. The other fun thing is that there’s not strange Skittles Breath after eating them. Often with the fruity Skittles I find coffee unpalatable. Though they’re not really coffee compatible, they don’t spoil the experience for me.

    4. oh yummy.
Carnivals always remind me of those deep-fried Snickers…the insides are all melted and it’s absolutely sticky and almost unbearably sweet, but it’s definately a treat i always look for.

    5. Oh how I love cotton candy.  I recently had some Charms-brand packaged cotton candy.  It wasn’t as fluffy as the real thing, but it sufficed in making my teeth hurt.

I’m definitely intrigued by these Skittles.

    7. Wow new skittles flavours I’d actually like to try. That’s a first. I’m a little dissapointed they don’t have ‘Deep fried till it’s soggy sugar covered doughnut’ since that’s what I always look forward to at carnivals/fairs/shows.

    8. i’m with leigh, this is an actual skittles flavourway i’d like to try.

when i read “skittle breath” i processed it as “skid row breath”. ergh. that’s a skittles flavour combo i could live without.

    13. I found these at Safeway, if anyone’s still looking for them.  (I’m in San Francisco.)

I have to say I was kind of disappointed.  The flavors were all so weak… I had to put three or four in my mouth at a time to get a feeling for what they were supposed to taste like.  Cotton Candy was weird… sometimes I’d taste actual cotton candy, and other times I’d taste almost nothing at all.  That flavor was probably the biggest letdown.  Bubble Gum and Red Licorice were both okay, but that’s about it.  I think my favorites were Green Slushy (which did have a nice bite to it) and Candy Apple (which had a pleasant, sweet yellow-apple flavor).

I probably won’t bother buying them again.  I think my expectations were just too high.

    15. I swear, I’ve looked in drugstores, grocery stores, convenience stores and Targets for the last month, and I can NOT find these anywhere. :(  Makes me very sad.  Plus now it’s just turned into the Quest For The Golden Bag (yellow, actually, but whatever). What, is Orange County too good for Carnival Skittles??!

      Red: Jam Donut,
      Pink: Fairy Floss
      Green: Toffee Apple,
      Blue: Bubble Gum, and
      Yellow: Popcorn.
Mmn, the bubble gum one is delicious :D

Katlyn & Theresa - I also saw them at Walgreen’s for $3.79 a pound. In the single sized bags I’ve seen them at quite a few (but not all) 7-11 in the single sized.

Corinne - the Aussie flavors definitely sound cool. I wonder if jam donut isn’t the same as red licorice!

    24. I found these at my local Ralph’s in the individual size, so I decided to give them a try. So far my favorite flavor was the cotton candy, followed by candy apple and bubble gum. The green slushy flavor was alright, but nothing special. Now the red licorice flavor is just pure evil! It tastes exactly like this nasty medicine I used to take for brochitis when I was a kid. Needless to say all of the red licorice pieces went straight into the trash.

    26. I bought a packet of our Aussie version “Show Time” - wasn’t impressed - popcorn was gross, bubblegum ok, jam donut had a slight cinnamon flavour to it, toffee apple probably pick of the bunch, fairy floss just sugary….not my favourites - give me original or sour anyday!

    27. I found single serve bags at my local Wal-Mart. For some reason, I swear the first Lime Slushy one I ate had hints of grass, but none of the subsequent ones did. I wonder if the Skittle I ate before the grassy one influenced the flavor perception.

I love skittles! But where’s the yellow bag? They have been teasing us by putting one carnival flavor in each of the other flavor bags. I am eager to find the real thing. let me know if you can help.

    29. I finally found these in MD (at a target).  I’m quite enjoying them. I think the green slushy is my favorite. It does resemble Mountain Dew a little, but it’s tarter than Mountain Dew.  Although I’m beginning to think there’s something wrong with me as I eat skittles and drink Mountain Dew at the same time.

    31. I really loved the green slushie ones the best. The other day at a movie I bought some regular Skittles and was overjoyed to find they had replaced the original lime with GREEN SLUSHIE!! It was perfect! I hope they keep it, although it did still say “for a limited time only” on the box.

    34. I found these, got a big bag and I’m eating them now. I looked it up on Google, because I hadn’t heard of them.

Honestly, the first bite is going to be the best. I really couldn’t find a favorite flavor…perhaps Green Slushie. These are really way too accurate for their own good.

Licorice with the texture of a Skittle? Eh.

      Definitely try them.

    37. We just got a bag of these today.  Being a Skittles and Starburst fan (despite incredibly lame commercials), I always try the latest flavors.

While I agree that the cotton candy is very generic, this bag smells good as soon as you open them.  They taste great, and the shells are not as hard as some of the Skittles are.

Quite frankly, I hope they keep these around for a long, long time, because I love them.  The last time I got this happy over Skittles was the ice cream flavor bags (caramel was my fav, which tasted a lot like Sugar Babies).

These are well worth trying out!

    38. PS - you can get the Skittles in small bags on eBay!  I’d also check your local Sams Club - while we no longer have one anywhere, they probably have them as well.

    39. I finally found a bag of these yesterday at Hannaford (grocery store here in Maine) and they are indeed great.  I’ll grab a few more bags to stretch the summer flavors into fall.  but almost three months of checking everytime I went to the store (since I read this review) was a little silly!

    40. Alright, after searching endlessly for these in drugstores, I broke down and bought some on eBay.

(They’re perhaps my favorite Skittle variety, battling it out with Smoothie Mix.)

Imagine my surprise today when I walked into the gas station to find Carnival SKittle GUM!

The flavors are slightly different: cotton candy (light blue), gum ball (orange), candy apple (red), berry-go-round (green), pink lemonade (pink).

They’re as tasty as the *original* Carnival Skittle incarnation, but like any Skittles gum, they’re losing flavor very quickly.

    48. I am so happy for all of the people who left comments on carnival skittles.  It is good that you have enjoyed and been able to get them.  I looked for months before finally finding them locally in 1# bags.  I almost bought them for 7$ online I wanted to try them so bad! After eating them I was hooked, and I usually don’t even eat candy!  When the sugar urge hits however, they are tops!  I don’t think they are a continuing item at our local Wal-Mart so I bought 5 bags for 1.97 each.  Keep looking, you too will find them when the time is right.  I have enjoyed every comment since making my first query on 6/16/07.  May all you candy bloggers have a happy end of summer! kw

    52. I’m glad I’m not the only one who has found this version of skittles addicting.  what are they putting in them anyways? I pour a little cup full in the car console and happily munch them as i drive. my kids think i’m crazy and ask where they have all gone when we reach our destination. they are the best when eaten by 2’s and 3’s of the same color at a time to savor the flavor and texture. after restraining myself and buying only 5 bags at walmart; i went back to get the rest since i was afraid they won’t continue to carry them and i haven’t seen them anywhere else. not even at other walmarts. if i have cavities next time i go to the dentist (despite regular brushing) i will have to give up on my new candy favorite. oh well there’s always sunflower seeds, and they aren’t hard to find. enjoy! kw

    60. I found them on Ebay. They are kind of pricy, but if you really want them, it’s an option and there are several sellers. I was never a huge fan of original Skittles, but I love these! I think they taste very true to the flavors they represent - except green slushie, because what is a green slushie supposed to taste like? But it’s still really good! It is a brilliant concept for Skittles - now add the popcorn like in Australia and I’m a happy camper!

    61. I first found these last april at my school book store. i bought 10(all they had left) of the2.17oz bags. then i couldn’t find them again. i looked online and all i could find by searching was the small wiki entry but that was it. i called vendors and nothing. well.. i came across this site the begining of this month because i have been hearing about these finally.i’ve looked everywhere and couldn’t find them. i went to wal*mart everday and nothing! so i emailed skittles and they pretty much told me i was out of luck and wouldn’t be able to get any. well TODAY, i went to this gas station, Bills Suprette, and they had 26 of the 2.17oz bags, i bought them all. that’s all they had in the store. i was SO HAPPY! you have no idea. well then i stopped at wal*mart and thought to look, and they finally had some!! they had 10 of the 1 lb bags and i bought them all. i think i’m set for a while. i couldn’t beleive it. i’ve been checking everywhere! guess today was just my lucky day!

    69. I’ve been searching for these for the last six months, since they had the “teaser” green slushy ones replacing the lime in the original flavor bag.

I finally found them at a CVS, two bags left, and the workers had emptied them out of the case box and hid them along with all the original flavor.  I saw the two yellow bags hiding out in there, barely sticking out among all the original flavor ones, and it made my day!

I hate to say it, but I ate myself sick of them and my family doesn’t like them. :-( I’m sure they’re a bit stale by now, but i’ve kept them in a cool space so they aren’t “gross” yet. 84. I never knew there was a such thing as Skittles Carnival. In May 07 I was living in Killeen/Ft. Hood, Texas and i’ve never seen them. But i’m glad I found them i’ll be sure to buy them!

    85. they were a limited edition candy apparently. I’m surprised the blogger didn’t mention it was a limited edition. Thats the reason nobody can find them anymore. unless someone proves me wrong.

Susy - “the blogger” did mention it was limited edition. In fact, it’s in bold. It’s also mentioned in the stats box at the end. The review as also posted in 2007.
