See’s Pumpkin Spice & Root Beer Lollypops

imageOne of the classic and more distinctive products that See’s makes is their line of Lollypops. They’re made with cream and are more like a hard caramel than a normal boiled sugar hard candy pop.

The regular flavors shift around but right now they sell: Butterscotch, Chocolate, Vanilla and Caf? Latt?. I like all of them except for the chocolate. It tends to be grainier and if I have the option of actual chocolate right there at See’s, well that’s what I’m going to go for. But the one thing the pops have going for them is that they’re so darn durable. Summer-safe, creamy candy is pretty hard to find.

Every once in a while they bring out new flavors. This fall they have a limited edition Pumpkin Spice Lollypops that should be available until Thanksgiving.

The ingredients are pretty simple: corn syrup, cream, sugar, natural and artificial flavors, butter and yellow #5. I don’t know why they have to put artificial colors in there, but I guess I’m guessing that they’d look fine without it, maybe they don’t.

The packages are a little box that holds a bag of eight pops. Not a bad price either at only $4.80 for the set (60 cents each). Each paper stick pop is wrapped in orange mylar

See’s pops are big blocks. Kind of chunky and perhaps a little big for easy-to-eat suckers. (Sometimes I pull them off the stick and eat them as hard candies.)

These are rather light in color and don’t smell like much other than maybe caramel.

They’re very smooth and melt slowly. Extremely creamy and not overly sweet they’re also a bit bland.

I had the first one and thought maybe it was that my allergies were acting up and I couldn’t taste any of these pumpkin spices, so I waited a few days and checked my sinuses and had another. They sweet and creamy and taste a bit like creme brulee ... but I’m not getting any actual spices I associate with pumpkin custard like cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice or ginger.

I wouldn’t call them bad, just nothing like the name would imply.

See's Root Beer PopsAs a side note, earlier this summer they had a limited edition Root Beer. I got a hold of this while shopping with Sera of The Candy Enthusiast in July. She bought a whole package (the limited edition flavors are not sold individually like the classic ones are) and graciously shared two with me.

I loved them and went back in August to pick up a whole package for myself and was told they were all gone.

These pops were a wonderful mix of creamy smoothness, light sweetness and the spicy bite of root beer. It was kind of like a root beer float, but warmer. Root beer floats often suffer from tasting watered down when the ice cream mixes with the root beer, instead this had all the creaminess of ice cream and the intense flavor of root beer mixed together.

They’ll have Cinnamon Lollypops for Christmas. Each pop is 70 calories and they’re Kosher.

  1. This sounds like a more interesting version of the vanilla one. I was upset when they said the peanut butter flavored ones were discontinued a couple of years ago, I think those might have been the best. Root beer flavor sounds pretty delicious too though, hopefully they bring it back sometime next year.

  2. Even with the mediocre review, I am still going to my local See’s to find some today!  I am a sucker (pun intended) for anything pumpkin flavored.

    Thanks for the heads-up, Cybele!

  3. Cybele just had me try one of the pumpkin lollipops, and my immediate response was, “It tastes like the weird foam of a root beer float.”  That’s when she pointed out that I missed the good root beer lollipops.

  4. Okay, just went and got them - and they’re too gingery for me.  I hate fake ginger!  Sigh.  Oh well.

Oh well. When I picked them up, I couldn’t smell anything except for the chocolate permeating the store, either.

At least they didn’t taste like cherry.

  6. I agree with you on both! I tried the Pumpkin Spice last fall and was disappointed with it….and I just adored the Root Beer. They need to make that one a regular! smile

  7. I can’t wait to try these even though you only gave them a luke warm review.  Afterall, it combines my two loves: candy and pumpkin.  After reading your blog three years ago I start my own, pumpkinpassion.com.  I wrote about your blog inmy inspiration in my very first blog post ever, http://www.pumpkinpassion.com/index.php?/archives/1-Welcome.html .

  8. I miss the peanut butter suckers! Why did they go away? We don’t have See’s where I live so getting them is a special treat. But it hasn’t been the same since the peanut butter suckers disappeared. I agree on the chocolate assessment- blech! (OK, not nearly as eloquently worded as in the original post but I’m not a writer!). And I’m kind of meh on the other ones. Oh, how I miss the peanut butter!!

  9. I just ordered a couple packages of the pumpkin lollies, as well as pre-ordering the cinnamon Christmas lollies. I can’t wait to get them! I’ve always loved the chocolate and carmel versions, so how can pumpkin and cinnamon be bad?

  10. I just bought the cinnamon ones, and they are amazing. I def. recommend them, I bought them today, and I’ve already eaten three. I’m going to buy some more tomorrow. ^_^

  11. I was disappointed with the Pumpkin Lollipops. They were just kind of sweet and blah flavored. I agree with Justin about the peanut butter lollipops?they were a childhood favorite (along with just about everything else in the stores, especially the free samples).

Some years ago See’s offered a Sarsparilla lollipop, which was quite good, too. Guess I will have to try the Root Beer to see how it compares!

  12. BRING BACK THE PEANUT BUTTER LOLI POPS!!!!

  13. See’s Pops are the best, but I will concur with a plurality of these reviews - BRING BACK THE PEANUT BUTTER FLAVOR!

Excuses I got in stores has varied from: “they didn’t sell well enough” (I don’t believe that at all) to “a percentage of customers are allergic to peanuts” (that I believe, yet they still put peanuts in their chocolates).  Now I get by on their Peanut Brittle.

Notwithstanding the lack of a Peanut Butter flavor pop, these are great candies and are like six bucks for a dozen.  Perfect office gift, stocking stuffer, whatever present for six bucks.  If you live outside See’s territory and give people See’s, it will be one of their favorite gifts, guaranteed.

  14. I was wondering if the Peanut Butter lolipop could be made and distributed as a special item.  Just like the rootbeer and pumpkin spice.  My 85 year old Aunt just loved these and received them every Christmas and Birthday for years.  It was such a disapointment when they stopped making them.  If you can’t put them back on your sales menu. Then PLEASE make them as a special item.  I know so many people that would want them…
