Reese’s Select Cremes

Reese's Select Peanut Butter CremesThe Reese’s Select line has finally expanded beyond the initial offering of the Reese’s Select Cluster which launched in early 2008.

I spotted these new Reese’s Select Peanut Butter Cremes at Target over the weekend. They sport no banner that says “new” but they certainly weren’t there last month.

The 8 ounce bag is long and sturdy and kind of oddly puffed up. I assumed this was to protect the candy inside from getting smashed. (And air is pretty cost effective.) Inside are approximately 18 little individually wrapped pieces.

Reese's Select Peanut Butter CremesThe description on the bag says Smooth, Creamy Peanut Butter covered in Rich Milk Chocolate. I expected peanut butter meltaways.

The pieces are about 1.5” inches square, slightly domed (a full 1 inch high). They have a little R medallion molded on the top for Reese’s.

I had a little trouble with the integrity of a few pieces. I thought I chose my bag well and was careful bringing it home, yet two of the pieces that I ate (I consumed about half the package) were smashed completely.

Aside from that, the little individual wrappers are sturdy and feature full ingredients info (many individually wrapped Hershey’s items do not).

Reese's Select Peanut Butter Cremes

The little pieces smell of sweet peanut butter.

The bite is interesting, the chocolate shell, though soft, is thick enough to give a big burst of chocolate texture and slight dairy taste immediately. The melt is smooth and rather silky. The center is not at all like a meltaway - this is a full on gooey cream. (Spreadable like room temperature butter.)

At first I was taken aback because I found it extremely salty. But it did balance the sweet milk chocolate well. The texture combination and the rounded flavors gives these pieces well earned decadence points.

In case you were curious, the ingredients are:

Milk chocolate (sugar, cocoa butter, milk, chocolate, milk fat, soy lecithin, vanilla beans), peanuts, sugar, dextrose, partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil, less than 2% salt, partially hydrogenated palm oil, cornstarch, PGPR, soy lecithin, TBHQ, natural flavor.

The sodium content isn’t as extreme as it tastes. It’s 95 mg for 36 gram serving, which is actually less proportionally than regular Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.

These are not made in Mexico, like the Clusters, and these are also Kosher.

Overall, an interesting addition to the Reese’s line, a smoother melt and much higher quality than I expected. I enjoyed them quite a bit, and found that everyone else in the office did. Perhaps an 8 ounce bag isn’t big enough?

  1. I knew I was craving something. Thanks for letting me know what it is raspberry. Time for a trip to Target.

So, are they going to lower the quality of their regular products, but offer these as a “high-end” alternative? I hope not. Keep it all good!

  2. This looks like a “must have”.  There isn’t anything much better than peanut butter and chocolate together.

  4. Why do they make their chocolate in Mexico and not the USA?

  5. These are good.  I ate a whole bag for lunch once :D Target has actually carried them for several months.  They don’t necessarily shout out their presence where they are merchandised.

  8. I disagree with the rating, 8 “tasty”.  It should be 10 for “superb”.

  9. I agree with your disagreement on the rating. A 10 out of 10 is what it should be.

Dan & Sue - the ratings system is a reflection of how I feel about the candy. You can say that you would give them a 10 out of 10, but you can’t say that I should have liked them more ... it’s all about personal preference.

I wholeheartedly support your love of the candies and hope that you’ll write to Hershey’s and pass along your praise directly to them. Everyone likes a love note.

  11. I purchased a bag of Creme’s at the Hershey store in Times Square.  After eating the entire bag over the course of the day, I went back to the store and bought 2 more bags to take back to Atlanta. Those 2 bags are now gone and I have not found them anywhere here in Atlanta.  Anyone seen them?

  12. I just tried these and I have to say that I didn’t find them as wonderful as I thought they would be after this review. Given they are extremely yummy (and I love Resses) but it just must be the summer, because the candy seemed to melt into one piece and I found the chocolate to take dominance. Also, I was prepared for shock of salt, but I actually found them needing more. Regardless, I give them a 9 in my book and your review a 10. Next time I’ll try them in the winter (because I already finished off my bag)

  13. I think they are spectacularly wonderfully fabulously delicious. BUT I CAN’T FIND THEM! And they aren’t even on the Reese’s site—only Clusters are. Are they a thing of the past?!?! :-(

  14. Loved the peanut butter cremes. Seemed lighter than the pb cups.
I agree that the bag should contain more even though I`m trying NOT to eat them all in one day! A wonderful new product!!

  15. These are an 11 in my book. Unbelievably good. I got a big bag at Costco for around $10.00. I think the balance of sweet, peanuts and salt is perfect. It’s how I always want a Reese’s cup to be…creamy. I hate how some of the Reese’s cups are dry inside and the peanut butter crumbles. That is SO disapointing. But these are the BEST!

  16. Has anyone in San Francisco been able to find these?  Are they discontinued?

  17. I must say, I tried these for the first time today and was very impressed. Reese’s has always been my favorite, but they have by far, surpassed with these.  I brought the bag to work and shared, and they were all gone in minutes and in fact, one of my co-workers described them as orgasmic!  I went back to the store where I purchased them, and bought the remaining 2 bags…does anyone know where to get these in Toronto?
    Thanks!

  24. My son is at Hershey World right now filling my shopping list.  These (Reese’s cremes) were on my list.  He was informed by an employee that they have been discontinued.  Time to make a trip to the store and buy all I can.  why is it when they get an excellant product they take it away?
