Peeps Mash Ups

Folks are obsessed with Peeps around this time of the year. As I’ve stated before, I love the idea of Peeps, I just don’t really enjoy eating them. So I thought I’d try to improve my experience by creating some Peeps Mash-Ups. These aren’t full-blown recipes but more of a “dry fondue” with some items I had lying around:

image

Peeps Rocks - here I’ve mashed my Peep into some Strawberry Pop Rocks.

First, when mashing a Peep, it helps to pull it apart. This way you have two sticky halves for picking up other candy goodness as well as alleviating the issue of “double dipping” if you’re mashing with a buddy.

When I mashed the Pop Rocks into this fresh Peep, the rocks started snapping immediately. (You can’t see the noise in the photo, but it’s cracklin’ away, trust me.)

The cotton-candy-like flavor of the strawberry goes really well with the flavorless Peep. Light and refreshing. The pops give it a little sizzle.

imagePeeps Nerds - when you look at it, a Peep is really just a giant spongy Nerd with a pointy nose. Oh, and eyes. Nerds may have eyes in their little cartoon versions on the packaging, but not on the real candies like Peeps do.

I wasn’t really fond of this flavor combination, or the colors. The red and green (cherry & watermelon) looked too Christmasy. The taste combo was pretty good though. The crunch of the Nerds gave the spongy marshmallow a good texture and the zap of tartness also balanced out the sweetness of the Peep.

imagePeeps & Mini M&Ms - this is a natural combo and the colors couldn’t look better together if I tried. The little M&Ms adhere really well to the Peep’s exposed marshmallow. The sweet chocolate has a good crunch though it might be a little too sweet.

You could probably try mini dark chocolate baking chips for a less sweet experience (though you’d lose the crunch). The little tube they come in is especially easy for mashing on the go, just press the stickiness to the opening and tip the M&Ms Minis into it.

imagePeep Tarts - I have to admit that I was especially proud of the name for this one. Originally I wanted to use Pixy Stix for the powder, but I couldn’t find any (I try not to keep them in the house, for sanity’s sake). So I took the powder from an extra Topps Baby Bottle Pop. The Citrus Craze powder is already less sweet because it’s also intended to be “mashed up” with the lollipop top, so it adds flavor and tartness without more throat-burning sugar.

I’m not really sold on the combo, but after eating everything pictured here within about 15 minutes I had a stomach ache. Gah, I’m getting another one just typing this up!

So, what are your ideas for Peeps Mash-ups - either theoretical ones, or ones that you actually do?

  1. You have just elevated yourself to Goddess-ness in my personal pantheon.

Words fail me.  So do the creative possibilities you sought to elicit.  All I can do is sit back in awe.

  3. With Pop Rocks!  Genius!  You are like the Dr Frankenstein of candy!  I wonder what would happen if you could make Peep s’mores…mmmm….

  5. Best article ever!

Yeah, definitely peanut butter or dark chocolate (or both).  There are Orange-flavored Peeps Eggs right now that would go really great with those vanilla Tootsie Roll midgies or some white chocolate.

  6. Pop Rocks & Peeps?  Inspired!

Now if you can just come up with some sort of marshmallow mash involving coffee (full sized chocolate covered espresso beans seem kinda big for mashing).  I wonder if Kahl?a would work.  Maybe Kahl?a and nibs.  Or, just possibly, it could be terrible.  *shrugs*

I need to go find me some Pop Rocks.

  7. I am tempted to wake my daughter up - just so she can see this work of genius!  I guess it will wait til morning…

How about Peeps and chopped up, lightly-candied nuts? Like those Bavarian ones they make in the mall.

  8. Ha!  In your first photo it looks as if your Peep has been mortally wounded.

  12. Not a mash up but truly tasty:  Peeps Flambe.  Just like a creme brulee, you toast a peep under a broiler or with a propane torch, then give it a minute to harden back up again.  Mushy peeps innards in a thin, crispy, bittersweet caramelized shell.  Mmmmmm….

  13. This is by far one of the best things I’ve seen you write - I love your normal posts but this one is hilarious!

The only mash-up I can think of is a variation on Judy’s peeps flambe- a peeps S’more! Or - what about a peeps/Easter ice cream? Chop up loads of peeps, chocolate eggs, other easter-themed candies. Soften a tub of decent chocolate ice cream, stir through the peeps and chocolate egg bits, and re-freeze. Ohhh…this is starting to sound pretty good. You could also do it with normal chocolate rather than ice cream, and make a peeps rocky road…

  14. i’m thinking either mini reeses pieces or heath bar toffee bits.
i think i’ll buy some peeps on sale and give it a try.

  15. I’ve dipped mine in unsweetened cocoa powder (not hot chocolate mix…it needs to be unsweetened).  It balances out the super-sweet Peep nicely.

When I worked at Disneyland, we’d make Peeps s’mores in the microwave backstage every Easter.  What can I say, we had to work every single holiday so we had to create our own fun.  smile  Actually, I didn’t really like them in s’mores; the grainy sugar made the texture a little strange.

  16. I told my friend about this (because her parents gave her a couple of boxes of peeps to take back to college with her) and she loved the idea. Can you get pop rocks at any place, or do you have to go somewhere special because I LOVE the idea of pop rocks and peeps!

Roasted peeps sounds good too though.

good enough cook - hopefully this makes up for my poisonous cookies.

sarah - ooh, yes, graham crackers sound great, especially since they’re not too sweet.

Julilla & Judy - I don’t have a lot of luck with Peep’s'mores ... I tend to catch them on fire (not in the nice flambe way, more in the charcoal way). But they work really well in the microwave.

Susy - oh yea! Or Reese’s Pieces - like Cheryl suggested! (I think the crunch would be good.)

Spoodles - I haven’t been able to bring myself to try the flavored peeps (except the cocoa ones). Maybe I’ll find them on sale tonight.

R & spit - I recovered quite well and had another go at the pop rocks.

emzeegee - someone needs to come up with a name for that and call Ben & Jerry! (It needs toffee chips or some sort of salty kick.)

Lola’s Mom - oh, wouldn’t it be lovely if Peeps bled pop rocks and their tears were rock candy?

william - what about instant coffee?

Lesley - the unsweetened cocoa + peeps is exactly what I was hoping the Cocoa Peeps would be. Alas, no.

Magda - I get my Pop Rocks at the 7-11. I don’t know why, but that’s the easiest place for me to find them.

April - that got me to thinking maybe you could toss in chopped Peeps with popcorn. (They might even look like popcorn.)

Anyone had a Batter Dipped Deep Fried Peep?

I see a Volume II Mash Up post in the works. Thanks for all the enthusiasm & suggestions.
