Peanut Butter Caramels
Peanut Butter Caramels candy, I figured, would be rather like the molasses peanut butter kisses that I like (and so many others loathe) that are sold around Halloween in orange and black waxed wrappers.
It smells like peanut butter and tastes like it too, with a good salty, woodsy, nutty, creamy flavor ... and after you chew for a while the peanut butter dissipates and the soft chewy caramel with its buttery and caramelized sugar tones kick in. I liked them. I like the simplicity of them, I liked the packaging. The ingredients were all natural. I loved the price. I might pay $4 for these, but I truly doubt I’d take the plunge at $8. ALLERGEN STATEMENT [from the package]: this product may contain or have proteins derived from milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, peanuts and/or soybeans. (emphasis mine) ... wow, talk about covering your bases! (And maybe they need to keep their factory a bit cleaner!)

What’s especially pleasing about these is that instead of being wrapped in an opaque colored wrapper, these are in clear cellophane. You can see just what they are, a big O of caramel filled with a little spot of peanut butter.

Cybele, I just found your amazing site from your Flickr account. I wanted to show Zero bars as part of a post (here) and found your photo. Then I noticed your huge set on candy, so beautifully composed, lit, and photographed. I hope it is OK to link to your Flickr shot (with credit in the post, of course). And I loved your caption on the Zero bar shot. I’ll be back.
I wish I had seen these on clearance. Pre-Christmas, I bought the similarly packaged peppermint chews. They were delicious - soft and somewhat taffy-like with a delicate peppermint flavor - and pretty in the jar.
Wow, possibly the most allergen-rich candy ever conceived. It has peanut butter though, so all is forgiven.
I wonder if that extensive list of possible ingredients ("may have") is just boilerplate for whoever actually makes these. Maybe they make lots of different things at the same facility, so all of them get any potential ingredient. I’m thinking it has much more to do with lawyers than hygiene.
But I’ve run across fish stuff in weirder places. Maybe it adds tang or binding or smoothing or something.
Some wine labels have “fined with fish products” on them. What fish products I wonder.
I remember an exhibit at the aquarium at La Jolla, showing different everyday products that had ingredients from the sea. Some of them really surprised me. I think there might be some stabilizers that are seaweed extracts? Of course, that’s not fish or shellfish...so it probably is just the boilerplate (i think that’s a comprehensive list of allergens that now need to be documented)
I got a chuckle last night at an ice cream store when I noticed that everything except the sorbets said “Contains milk” on the name label (but was a bit mystified at the ones that also read “soy” - maybe soy lecithin?). No seafood warnings, though! And then there’s the “Contains wheat” on wheat flours. But I digress…
