Payday AvalanchesI reviewed the Payday covered in real milk chocolate earlier this year. That was a limited edition item and was quickly replaced with this permanent offering called the Chocolatey Avalanche bar. Cuz you know, given a choice, no one wants real chocolate. They want chocolate-like products!
The Payday Chocolatey Avalanche is pretty good. It does have real chocolate in there, it’s just mixed with some other tropical oils (and that wonderful, ubiquitous PGPR that’s all the rage right now) so it no longer qualifies as chocolate . Under the mockolate, the peanuts have a good salty hit to them that balances out the sweet and soft nougat and the slight chew from the caramel. The bar tasted slightly of cinnamon, but perhaps it was stored somewhere close to a case of Atomic Fireballs. The best thing about this bar was that it was fresh. Every last nut on there was crunchy and tasty.
The limited edition offering at the moment, however, is called Peanut Butter flavor Avalanche which also has no chocolate. It’s a peanut butter core, covered in caramel and rolled in peanuts then dipped in a peanut butter coating. I’ve eaten two of these so far. The first one I wolfed down the night before my CNBC appearance because I wanted to prep myself properly. The bar was dry and though filling, it stuck in my tummy like a rock. The second one I ate (pictured above) was a bit more pleasant. I’m glad I gave it another try. Still, the crumbliness of the nougat center was just too much when combined with the lack-luster peanut coating. If I were a milk drinker that would have been the perfect accompaniment. But candy shouldn’t need to be consumed with a beverage in order to work. I’m reverting to the regular old Payday. It never lets me down.

Nah, we don’t want real chocolate - we either want GOURMET chocolate or chocolatey-like coating. No in between for us! :^)

I’m gonna say it every time you mention how much you like Paydays—they are but a pale, pale imitation of the real deal: the Pearson’s Salted Nut Roll (they dropped the “Salted” part years ago, but it will always be there in my heart).
Congrats on CNBC. I absolutely adore Paydays. Can’t wait to try the new one.

I like the Chocolatey Avalanche quite a bit. Not enough to go and buy a whole box, but I’ve taken to buying it whenever I need something more substantial than a simple Hershey’s bar.
And Jim, you are spot on: the Pearson’s Nut Roll is fantastic. Sadly, the only place I know of which sells it is Sav-On, and since Sav-On was just assimilated by CVS they’ve stopped carrying it! I think the Sav-Ons which exist as part of an Albertson’s may still have them though. I need to check the next time I go shopping. I might need to stock up!
I think the best PayDay variation that I’ve tasted was the one that used honey roasted peanuts.
I like the chocolatey Payday. It’s like the Baby Ruth, but it’s saltier. I have trouble finding them, but when I see one at the store I am likely to pick one up.
I loved these candy bars in the 80’s and they disappeared. About a month ago, my local ACE hardware was selling them 3 for $1 and I bought them up. Today, a co-worker put 2 on my desk and says she found them at Walgreen. They are a little past their prime and are probably from the same batch as my previous purchase. I’m waiting to hear back from Hershey as to when they will be available again. It looks like another field trip to Hershey, PA!
The Peanut butter avalanche is the all-time best candy bar produced ever.
