Munch Bar

Every once in a while I get a hankering for peanut brittle. But aside from buying a tin of it or making it myself, it’s not that easy to find.

Enter the Munch bar. Billed on the label as “Only 6 Simple Ingredients” it’s just a buttery hard candy studded with peanuts. In fact, there’s more peanuts in here than most brittle I’ve had. The ingredients are: peanuts, sugar, butter, corn syrup, salt and soy lecithin.

The bars aren’t that easy to find, which is a shame, because they’re a nice alternative to a chocolate bar. Kind of like a Payday. Mars actually markets it using its wholesomeness as a selling point. I like it because it’s sturdy. You can expose it to higher temperatures without it losing its shape and taste.

The candy part of the bar is sweet and crunchy, not quite toffee and more solid than the usually slightly foamy peanut brittle candy. It’s buttery and has a light salty hit. The peanut flavor is, of course, the attraction. I love peanuts. There are 6 grams of protein in this bar, and at less than 1.5 ounces, that’s a lot of protein which makes it quite filling and satisfying.

They’re an excellent summer bar and worth the work at finding them. There’s another version of this made by Planters, I’ll try to have a review of that soon.

  1. I find it at Walgreens.  I like it because it’s a nice, sweet protein bar.  The thickness of Snickers can be a turnoff sometimes.  But this sort of bar is almost perfect for a late afternoon energy boost.

  2. The Planters ones (when they’re fresh) are crisper and somewhat less crunchy.  I prefer them, but can’t find them here, and getting them mail-order is hit-or-miss: sometimes they’re stale and just rather blah.

  3. If I remember correctly these used to be labeled as Snickers Munch Bar.  I’m surprised Mars kept them on the market after dropping Snickers from the name.

  5. my memory is that the Munch bar has a more buttery flavor to the toffee part than the Planters, but both are a solid non-chocolate choice.

  6. I’m pretty picky about brittle and toffee.  I hate the aftertaste of munch bars and other commercial products.  I’m not sure what it is.  Sees Candy peanut brittle is pretty good, but I recall eating some bad pieces of it.  Maybe it went bad?  Homemade, of course, is best.

  8. Max - I’m not so sure about that website. It describes the Munch bar as “Fresh coconut is smothered in rich milk chocolate to create the amazing Mounds bar!” and it also has a picture of a very old version of the label. Did you get the right product when you ordered?

Cat - I’ve had two of them now, and I’ve got to say I wish they sold them at the vending machine at work because I know I’d buy one at least once a week.

Todd - I found the Planter’s bar but haven’t tried it yet. But sometimes with any peanut bar there’s a bad one in there and it ruins the whole thing.

Ash - check that link that Max has and it shows the old Snicker’s branding.

Pam - I’ll have to check the dollar stores (yes, I’d like to pay less than 69 cents for them).

Jim - I looked at the Planter’s label and you’re right! No butter in there at all!

Kathy - it’s been years since I’ve made peanut brittle, but it’s definitely better!
