Mars Cuts Production

It was announced yesterday that Masterfoods plans to cut two lines at its Oak Park, IL factory. The affected lines mean the loss of 16% of the workforce (70 jobs) and they will no longer make the following:

Easter Egg Snickers
Pumpkin Shaped Snickers
Pop’ables - 3 Musketeers, Milky Way, Milky Way Midnight (hey, those sound good), Snickers & Snickers Cruncher

It’s possible that the novelty shapes of Snickers will be made elsewhere, the articles were vague on that, but Mars has mentioned discontinuing the Pop’ables line before (as Hershey’s has also mentioned discontinuing their similar Bites line).

  3. I never even got to try the Pop’ables, but I saw on the website that they have something like a malted milk ball ... dangit!

  4. I’ve looked high and low for more Snickers Pop’ables.  I can’t believe you would discontinue such a popular item.  They were my favorite snack while spending time in my sewing room!  Please reconsider and bring them back!!!

  5. GOD why can’t you leave a good thing going, You get people use to your product and then the next thing is you didcontinue it.I love the Milky way popable and I don’t care for alot of candy and of course the one I like you stop. Get rid of something else. Everything is not for the good of what the people likes it is to beat the compitistion. :-(

  7. Does anyone knows why pop’ables and hershey’s bites were discontinued? why they didn’t succeed?

  8. They test on animals! Boycott MARS!

  9. Wow, Jane Doe, way to stand behind your beliefs ... with a fake name.

For the record, Mars gave some money for a medical experiment at a university to study the heart healthiness of some compounds in chocolate. It’s not like they give Skittles to rabbits or anything.

  10. I agree with AnnaMae Zangla - companies always seem to get rid of the good stuff.  The Reese Popables were so addicting - I used to sit in front of the TV and eat them until I was sick.  But it was a good sick.  Anyway, get rid of something else and bring back the good stuff - maybe if they would have spent a little more $$ on advertising them like they do the regular candy bars that everyone already knows about - they would have been more of a success.

  11. I absolutely LOVED the Milky Way Poppables.  Once I started on a bag of them I couldn’t stop. They were my very favorite candy.  Is there any way they will be brought back?

  13. I don’t understand why you would even considering discontinuing something so popular.  Makes no sense.  It was the perfect candy.  I hope that you will reconsider and discontinue something else and bring back the Popables.  Those were the best thing ever!

  14. Man...I miss those dang Snickers Popables...they made going to the movies fun! Putting them in your popcorn and having the salt and sweet taste was great! I’ve tried recreating the popables by using the Snickers Mini’s and cutting them in half, but it does NOT taste the same! Come on Mars, help the folks out and bring them back. I go to the movies and always look in the display case to see if they may have brought them back…
