Mighty MaltsI’m a malt lover. You know that already. I know some folks don’t like malt, and that’s okay. I’ve got lots of other posts you can look at, so I won’t be offended if you skip to something else. When I was a kid I loved the Easter malted milk eggs because of the pretty shells. What was especially cool about them is that you could lick them and then use the coloring and smear it on your lips. Back then it was cool to have chalky-looking white or pink lipstick ... maybe if you were lithe had a nice tan and long blonde hair. If you were more macho you’d paint stripes on your cheeks as warpaint (pretty pink and blue warpaint!).
What freaks me out about them is their texture. Not in my mouth, but just looking at them. They’re matte, but not in a chalky way like the cute little Cadbury Mini Eggs are. The pink ones look kind of like erasers. Actually, the whole pile of them looks like something you’d pry out of a sticky toddler’s hand. Anyway, I had some Robin’s Eggs laying around (I got them from a bulk bag from CandyFavorites when I visited last month).
The Mighty Malts (right) are much smaller than the Robin’s Eggs. The coating, instead of being a hard, crisp candy shell and then layer of “chocolate” is a “candy” coating which can only be described as a combination of trans fatty acids and sugar. Fake white chocolate. Colored to look like PlayDoh. The outside is at once waxy and sweet. I can carefully shave off the coating with my teeth to create a new naked morsel of malt with practice. (I probably don’t look very appealing with the egg trapped between my lower lip and teeth though as I do this.) The malt inside is pretty good - crunchy and substantial, it has a good malt hit and a bit of saltiness to it. But that’s not enough for me to recommend these except as a last resort. I paid a buck for four of these little boxes, so I don’t feel cheated or anything. I doubt I’m going to eat the other two boxes, though. I found the malt to be good enough that I’m going to keep my eye out for another Easter version called Goose Eggs, which boasts real milk chocolate (and of course they’re larger, which would imply a greater malt ratio).

Thanks for the review on the might malts. I am a big fan of the robin eggs also, so I appreciated the info. This is a great site and I look forwrad to your future work.
I love malt. Chocolate malt, especially. Malteds mainly, but I have fond memories of Malt Balls.

I’m sorry you didn’t like the Mighty Malts Malted Milk Eggs (That’s a mouthful! No pun intended ^_^), Cybele. If you can’t appreciate their taste, at least as a writer you can appreciate their alliteration hehe. I’ve never had the mini ones myself, only the regular-sized ones. I think the regular-sized ones are probably tastier because there is a greater malt to coating ratio, so the malt flavor is more prominent and the waxiness and sweetness of the coating is less overpowering. It just seems intuitive that there should be more malt anyway because it’s so much less dense than the coating. Then again, I havn’t had a Might Malt Egg in quite a long time, so it’s possible that even the regular-sized ones have lost their appeal to me.
I’ve never tried the mini version, but I LOVE these. There’s something about that waxy coating...it surpasses the hard nothingness of the Robin’s Egg shell.
I’ve already purchased and downed a bag (yes, I shared). Yum.
I’m eating some Robin Eggs we got on sale and was checking to see if you’d reviewed them or not. I see not. Honestly, I’m not as thrilled with them as I was as a kid, but that’s not why I’m posting. I was reading through the other malt entries and saw you mention being on the search for the perfect malt ball. Have you tried the kind that are sold in bulk at the supermarket? We’ve gotten some a few times from either Ralphs or Albertsons (I’m pretty sure it was Ralphs as we shop there more often, but it could have been Albertsons) and they were seriously the best malt balls I’ve ever tasted. You should definitely check them out.
It is so funny to come across this site. I happened upon it in my search to order more mighty malts! I just finished my supply I had compiled prior to easter,now I cannot find any left anywhere!!I am a former “Big Girl” and since losing ALOT of weight I do not indulge in many things but this is one a weakness of mine!!!I just do not like the crunchy coating on the other malt balls. I like the soft artery clogging coating on mighty malts. I was just at the store and came across some Micky Mouse ice cream flavored malt balls that look promising. I just dont think anything can take thier place though! I guess I have to wait untill next easter and give my arteries a break!
