Lindt: 60% Extra Dark TrufflesIt’s hard to believe that I’ve never really had the Lindt Lindor truffles before this. I’ve always looked at them like they’re some sort of compromise ... they’re not a candy bar and they’re not a product of a fine chocolatier. So they never really fit the bill at any given moment. But let’s just start with me saying that I’m surprised at how good they are, and how glad I am to find their newest one that was sampled at the All Candy Expo was the 60% Extra Dark Truffle. I’ve enjoyed the Lindt bars for quite a while, as they were always easy to find and a rather upscale pure chocolate indulgence at a time when it was pretty hard to find such things ten years ago. In order to see how dark this new truffle was, I decided to try the array from white to extra dark. White Chocolate (yellow wrapper) - sweet and milky smelling with a strong vanilla note. Buttery and light in the middle. No real flavor to it, just sweet and creamy. Dark Chocolate (blue wrapper) - nice chocolatey aroma, with some fruity notes. The shell is creamy and smooth and of course the filling is buttery light, but perhaps a little greasy feeling. It could use more cocoa solids in it to give it more flavor. A really good, solid performer. I didn’t know what flavors I had, so I checked at the grocery store and these were 44 cents each there (and I’ve seen them cheaper). For a quick, single pick-me-up, they’re quite the bargain. Extra Dark Chocolate (black wrapper) - rather fruity smelling with a slight note of coconut. The shell was buttery smooth with a rather noticeable bitter and dry bite that really offset the creamy center. Now that I’ve tried them side by side, I much prefer the Extra Dark because the complex flavors of the shell offset the light, creamy, almost-liquid truffle center. Hazelnut (bronze wrapper - not pictured) - this one got smashed on the way home and I didn’t think it was fair to take its picture in that state. The center was light and buttery and studded with little hazelnut pieces. It was very sweet and light tasting, but missed some of the darker caramelized notes that I enjoy with many hazelnut products. Overall, I don’t think I’d turn down these truffles as a gift, but the only one I’m likely to buy for myself is the 60% Dark, as the complexity of it balances the rather heavy fat. They’re a good deal as a small indulgence you get at a grocery store since you can buy them as singles. I’m pretty sure if I had a half a pound of them they’d disappear pretty quickly, whether they were my favorite flavor or not. UPDATE 10/5/2009: I’ve had more opportunities to try these over the past few years. Lately I’ve been finding the flavor to be a bit “empty”. There’s a wonderful texture, but the slick & oily center seems to dilute the rich chocolate flavor I expect. I’m downgrading them to a 7 out of 10, as I’m finding I’m more likely to give them away than eat them myself. Related Candies

Oh these are hevenly. I found a place with the 60% truffles half off.
There is also orange, mint, and this one you have got to try. I might include them in a package for you along with clodhoppers - the falvor of the lindt truffle is called Lindor Stracciatella and you can see it at http://www.lintusa.com right now by clicking on the lindt summer wites. Lindor Stracciatella 8.5 oz. Bag. This Straccitella is absolutely to die for. It is creamier in the center than the white and is basically a cookies and cream. I haven’t but want to try to bar version of the Straccitella
The url is http://www.lindtusa.com/
Give the mint ones a try if you see them. The underlying buttery-ness of the filling really works well with mint.
The absolute absolute best are the red ones - their signature “Lindor”!! You have to try them.
Have you seen Pimp That Snack’s version of the Lindor Truffle? It’s hilarious (I don’t know about delicious though…)

I can’t believe you haven’t tried these! It’s one of my favorite ways to indulge my chocolate craving without going overboard. My favorite little bulk store used to sell these for $.25, but now they’ve gone up to $.30. And Borders sells them at $.40 or 3/$1. I’ll usually get a couple dark and maybe a mint, but now I’ll have to be on the lookout for that extra dark! I haven’t seen it around here… (or the straccitella for that matter - it is intriguing!)
Doesn’t seem worth it to me - I tried them, found them too sweet, made to last for months in the grocery store bins. But a few years ago they were a cute gift to bring back from Switzerland, now they’re avaialable everywhere stateside, seems. Borders Bookstore, for one…
There’s a Lindt chocolate store in my mall, and I can’t go in there without spending tons of money. They’re always having some kind of a sale or offer, and they have so many different varieties! The walls are covered with all of the different truffles they offer- one that I think you might like is the Stracciatella truffle; it’s a white chocolate truffle with crushed cocoa nibs. Also good are the dark chocolate raspberry truffles, and I really enjoy the hazelnut variety, having almost nothing to compare it with.
They also have more upscale truffles, such as the Intense Orange variety. Their holiday specialties are also a lot of fun. For the descriminating buyer on a budget, I think they’re a good buy.
Excuse me for unlurking, but if you ever have one of these around, try my uncle’s silly “recipe”. He says he knows how to “cook’em just right”.
Let it sit on top of your cable box or laptop or other warm appliance for a few minutes. Or don’t refrigerate on a hot day.
The appeal goes up considerably when they’re a little soft.
I really like the extra dark ones (raspberry ones are probably my second favorite). And the bonus is that at the Lindt store near me, they usually hand out free truffles to get people to buy stuff. Usually I just leave with my free truffle. They probably don’t like me very much.
My fav are the hazelnut, raspberry and cinnamon (which is only available during christmas), you should try the coffee ones if you get a chance.
i got a bag of these as a gift this past christmas, and my friends and i really enjoyed them. i’m so hungry now!
I just love the hazelnut ones. They’re so good!
Sadly, when I went into Borders today and bought a mag - I didn’t see any of the Lindt truffles near the coffee bar or at the registers. I didn’t ask about it…was a bit shy as I’m trying to lose a few pounds and gee…do I need ANOTHER truffle anyway? YES! Yes, I do!! So if not at Borders (seems they’ve rearranged and are promoting new and other kinds of impulse buys) - I intend to get them elsewhere. Do try their Orange and Mint flavor Truffles ... you won’t be disappointed.
I love the white chocolate ones. Because of the consistency of the filling, they melt easily and sometimes you bite into one of them after it’s been out in the heat for a while and the white chocolate filling just pours out! It’s the best
Oh, You’ve found my favorite chocolates!
I love your blog, and am sorry this is my first comment so far. I had to though, after finding this review. Lindt makes AMAZING chocolate. I am an addict. I love their 60% extra dark truffles, as well as the peanut butter and hazelnut.
They also came out with a 99% cocoa bar that I actually ate entirely on its own. o.O I had to wonder if the cocoa was the only ingredient in high concentration.
Try any of these out of the refrigerator. Crack the shell with your teeth, carefully remove the center, eat the shell, and then melt the center truffle in your mouth.
Heaven!
The Lindt Lindor Milk Chocolate truffles (the red ones, not pictured above) are my favourite chocolate, recently trumping Galaxy (standard bar). Really really awesome; but can’t eat too many else I loose the effect
I love the regular dark truffles and the 60% dark truffles. I can eat 10 of them at a time.
I cannot tolerate most other chocoolates, since I tried lindt truffles. I found them in some local stores, but they are more expensive and less fresh. I buy from http://www.globalchocolates.com .
I have ordered from them at least for 4 times so far.
