Kisses Coconut Creme

Coconut Kisses PackageI saved this review for after Easter. They package makes them look like an Easter product, but after having those Godiva eggs (even if they were freaktacularlly expensive), there was just no way that they were going to compare well. Now that they’re a distant memory, I feel that I can give the Hershey’s Coconut Creme Kisses my undivided attention.

I have to say that I loved the blue wave design on the foil. It was tropical and also different enough from the other foils out there that I could guess that this was coconut.

imageInside the foil was a molded Kiss with a soft creme filling of coconut.

The shell of the Kisses were rather greasy. This wasn’t as noticeable when I chilled the Kisses (thanks for the suggestion!), but the chocolate outside still felt a little weird on the tongue, no matter the temperature. A little cool, a little less crumbly that the regular Kiss chocolate and of course it tasted like coconut before you got to the center.

The filling was interesting. The creme part was actually more like creme and less like fondant than the Cherry Cordial Creme I tried before. This actually seemed a bit buttery. There were also crisp little flecks of coconut in there.

It’s not at all like an Almond Joy center.

I enjoyed them, but I don’t think I’m a fan. The greasiness is just offputting. It makes the little flags translucent and of course makes my fingers oily if I linger too long while unwrapping. I enjoyed the nutty taste, but I know some other people didn’t like them. I found the lighter flavor of coconut like munching on some chocolate and suntan lotion. Like a summer at the pool. (Okay, maybe that’s not an appealing image, but it’s been so gloomy and overcast here in Los Angeles lately, maybe I’m just looking for something ‘sunny’.)

Previous Kiss Reviews: Cherry Cordial Creme, Orange Creme Kisses, Caramel Kisses, Peanut Butter Kisses, Candy Cane Kisses & Mint Kisses and Chocolate Truffle Kisses.

Note: These are limited edition, but it’s unclear if they are an Easter item. Some stores will put all the Limited Edition stuff on sale with the Easter goodies (that’s how I got my KitKat Mini Dark Mint), so keep a look out ... when in doubt just ask!

  1. Awww, I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy these.  I love them.  I didn’t notice any greasiness, though, that would have probably put me off, too.

  2. I was tempted to buy these before I read your review. Now I think I’ll pass. Greasy Kisses, indeed!
I keep hoping for the day that they come out with Mexican Chocolate Kisses!

  3. I agree entirely: I think the coconut center tastes just like tanning oil smells :D I bought a bag a month ago or more, and it’s still mostly full. A pale comparison to Almond Joy…

Speaking of which: Did you get a chance to try the limited edition Toasted Coconut Almond Joy when they were out? I saw them once and then never again—I completely regret not buying one

  4. I agree....I really wanted to like these when they came out last year sometime, but they were bad. I’d much more enjoy a toasted coconut Kiss instead.

  5. I agree these aren’t as great as they could be.  The toasted coconut Almond Joy is much better but the only place I ever found those was Big Lots.  As for Mexican Chocolate Kisses, WHY hasn’t anyone thought of this before?  Thanks, Breda, now I’ll think of nothing else. smile

  6. I thought the outside texture was weird too, but I love these. Mexican Chocolate would be an awesome limted edition, as would white chocolate macadamia. Have they ever done a cookies and cream kiss?

  7. Anita & Janelle - I did pick up the Toasted Coconut Almond Joy last year on vacation (but didn’t do a full review). I really liked it, actually much better than a regular Almond Joy. You can still order them online:

    http://www.candywarehouse.com/toastedcoconut.html

Julilla - I still liked them, just didn’t love them. Folks are still eating them out of the dish on my desk and I have a few now and then.

Breda - oh, that would be divine. I know they had Dulce de Leche at one time, but I never got to try them.

Kelly - hmm, cookies & creme! They already make the bar and sometimes the nuggets, how hard would it be to do the Kisses?

Kate - I suppose if it was just like an Almond Joy I’d complain that it was just like an Almond Joy ... they went and did something different and, well, I guess we know why Almond Joys are so enduring.

  8. Best Kisses I have ever tasted.  Sorry they are only on sale for a limited time.

  9. I LOVE the coconut kisses!!  I am a MAJOR Reese’s fan...peanut butter and chocolate what could be better.  I am NOT a fan of the peanut butter kisses, but LOVE the coconut ones!  I HOPE they bring these back to buy any time instead of just limited edition.

  10. I could just copy comment # 9 from Lisa on 4/26, I’ve always loved Reece’s, still do, what a mix! But the coconut, blew my mind, I’ve shared them with friends and they’re all asking if I can find more....!  PLEASE, PLEASE, bring them back!

  11. LOVE THE COCONUT KISSES...but now i cant find them anywhere :( where can i get some more bags?

Comment by Marcy on 5/25/07 at 5:10 pm

  12. I ate about 8 of these then promptly threw out the bag.  When texture is as important to you as taste (and I couldn’t taste any coconut through cheapy chocolate) this was absolutely killer and revolting with no redeeming qualities.  The center of mine could only be described as soupy, crunchy (from sugar crystals), with the occasional bit of coconut meat.  Perhaps I got a bad bag, but all 8 were the same consistency.
I would never /ever,/ eat these things again.

  13. I love these Kisses. They remind me of Girl Scout Samoa cookies. I also wanted to say that I saw Cookies ‘n Cream Kisses the other day. I think it was at Wal-Mart. I didn’t buy any, but I can’t wait to try them.
