Karuna & Princas Sokoladas

This was another one of the Eastern European sweets that a friend of a friend brought back that I’m just getting around to posting about. What I thought was rather interesting about it is that it’s made by a company owned by Kraft. I suspect that the original company has been around for more than a hundred years in Latvia or Lithuania and was bought by the international food corporation more recently and that the production has not changed markedly. But I am kind of at a loss to figure this one out, as the labels haven’t a bit of English on them ... not even any other languages I’m familiar with such as German, Italian or Spanish.

As far as I can tell, each 100 gram bar is milk chocolate. The Princas is dairy milk, the lighter of the two. It’s very smooth with a slight coconut taste to it. It’s exceptionally sweet with a good milky flavor. The chocolate is neither American style nor Swiss style. It’s less grainy than the American chocolates like Hershey or Mars but still as sweet. Overall it’s just good. Not great, but for mass-market chocolate it’s well packaged, fresh and tasty. It could use some more chocolate complexity but it’s certainly something that I’d pick up while traveling to keep in my purse for a little pick-me-up.

The Karuna was also very sweet, exceptionally smooth and had the same coconut flavor to it. It was a little stickier and with a slight hint of cinnamon-woodsiness to it.

I’m not quite sure what the difference between the two is except that the Kuruna is darker. Of the two I prefer the Karuna but I’d probably be pretty happy with either one. I’d probably munch on it with some pretzels or some other savory or bland salty treat (or maybe some shortbread).

  1. Hi,

I just happened upon this site.  I spent some time in Lithuania and can tell you that Karuna and Princess (my favorite just happened to be the Strawberry cream filled Princess bars) are two of the best.  You’re not likely to find this chocolate outside of Eastern Europe, unless you order it over the internet.  Bring’s back memories, though.  My friends and I were averaging a bar a day, but we walked about 30 minutes to school one way, so I guess we could get away with eating that much chocolate.  I never got sick of it.  Yum!

    Iki (see you in Lithuanian)

  2. Great blog, thanks!

If memory serves Karuna means crown and is the name of the factory/company/Kraft subsidiary.
And I agree about the strawberry filled Princess! In general I’ve noticed Eastern European strawberry and/or youghurt flavoured chocolates to be remarkably good. Perhaps it is something in that style of chocolate that “marries” the berry/slightly sour flavours in a way Western -style chocolate (whether Scandinavian, German, Swiss or Belgian/French style) just can’t?

  3. Oops - sorry I forgot to add that if you have problems with not being able to read the text on something you should just post it (or a legible photo of it) and more likely than not some reader will be able to translate it for you.

  8. I LOVE these candy bars. I lived in Lithuania for a couple of years and probably ate one of these candy bars almost everyday. Does anyone know how to order one of these candy bars online?

  9. I am here to explain the difference between Karuna and Princas. (By the way, I am almost 100 percent sure that the packages have English explanations on them.) Karuna is a true chocolate, I mean, only cocoa fats are used in it. What is more, there are more types of Karuna chocolate. In addition to the milk one here, there are also dark chocolate bars, dark chocolate bars with nuts and with several fillings. Princas, on the other hand, is made with using vegetable fats in addition to cocoa butter. This makes its melting temperature a bit lower so it becomes rather sticky and less enjoyable (for me, at least) during the hotter days. What is more, there are several types of Princas chocolate, but all of them are milky - as opposed to Karuna.
However, these are one of the better Lithuanian chocolate bars.
