I Miss: Bar None

There once was a fantastic chocolate bar that surpassed KitKat in crispiness, that exuded such a creamy sweet experience that Hershey promptly mucked around with the formula and then discontinued the bar.

I’m talking about the Bar None.

It was a cocoa wafer, chocolate filling, peanuts and a milk chocolate coating and was introduced nationally in 1987. It was a wide bar, about the size of the current Whatchamacallit bar. The series of light chocolate wafers were filled with chocolate cream, covered with a light coating of crushed peanuts and then a coating of darker than normal milk chocolate.

I was irritated at the time that Hershey had just mucked up the Whatchamacallit bar by adding lame caramel to it. I’m faithful to bars that are faithful to me.

With Bar None I was immediately smitten.  I would buy them at the convenience store just over the bridge from campus where I was going to college. I would buy them in vending machines, I would buy them in the six pack at the grocery store. I would buy them whenever I could. If there was a reason that they didn’t succeed, it couldn’t be attributed to my lack of evangelical devotion.

Later in 1993 Hershey’s reformulated the bar and added caramel but also divided them into two bars (kind of like the Reese’s Sticks). While they were tasty, they weren’t the same and I lost interest in them entirely.

I wasn’t alone and at some point they stopped making them in the United States. The retooled version is still made in Mexico.

image

I’ve heard that they’re okay, and I’m actually curious to try the Mexican version, because maybe I was wrong about the new Bar None. But I’m not curious enough to take that drive south of the border in search of it.

Instead, sometime in the late eighties I also discovered the Le Chocolatier cookies made by Pim’s.

image

These are flavorless wafers with a chocolate cream and covered in real chocolate. What’s even better is they’re sold in boxes so while they weren’t wide and ample bars, there was an ample supply of them. If you were a fan of Bar None and have pined for it all these years, try the Le Chocolatier. Or take a trip to Mexico and let me know how those are.

  1. Cadbury does (or did) make a product almost identical to Le Chocolatier, but I can’t seem to recall the name. Not sure if there was chocolate cream in the centre, though. I remember taking them as a recess snack in kindergarten. They came in a purple package, but give that purple is Cadbury’s official colour, that doesn’t help to narrow it down.

  2. Ohhh how you’ve made me pine again.  Bar None was my most favorite candy bar in alla world.  I was so upset when they changed it. At the point when they discontinued making the, I could care less as the change already had turned me off. They were dead to me, so to speak. haha!

I’ve never seen these cookies you talk about - but they look like they have a white (vanilla?) cream between the wafers - or is that a lighting effect in the picture?

Regardless if you say they are close, then I’ll keep a look out for them. =)

  3. Oh, I ate a lot of Bar Nones from the candy machine of my dorm.  But, weren’t they enrobed in dark chocolate?  Were they the ones that had the ad about taming the Chocolate Beastie?

Comment by Marjorie Hansen on 11/21/06 at 3:47 pm

  4. M - I think I have a vague recollection of eating that a long time ago!

Lisa - the cream inside is chocolate, but the wafers are that bland vanilla (that’s the light color in the picture).

Marjorie - I’m not sure if they were dark chocolate or just darker milk chocolate. The wrappers I’ve seen just says “chocolate.”

  5. My husband constantly talks about his longing for the Bar None. I’ll have to look around for and test the Le Chocolatier cookies on him to see if his pain is relieved at all.

Also, someone from New Zealand needs to send you some Pineapple Lumps! I had some sent to me recently in a swop and they were tasty.

  6. I’m the aforementioned husband, and yes, I pine for the Bar None like no other bar ever made. I’ve tried to take solace in the Take Five but, delightful as it is, it can’t hold a birthday candle to the mythical Bar None. Though a fan of the Cadbury Dark, I have to say that I bristled with indignation when the Bar None’s coating was switched to dark chocolate.
I’m a firm believer in the axiom “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it”. This travesty is one of the many reasons why.

  7. The Bar None (both versions) was covered in milk chocolate.  And I too was disappointed when Hershey added the caramel as an “improvement.” With caramel, it became little more than a clone of Twix.

Comment by Johnny Carruthers on 12/06/06 at 1:52 pm

  8. Wow! I have been whining for YEARS about how Hershey first ruined the Whatchamacallit bar by adding caramel (it was the greatest candy bar ever when it first came out). THEN, years later, I fall in love with the Bar None bar, only to have them ruin THAT with caramel as well. What is with Hershey’s devotion to caramel?

Well its good to know I’m not the only one still mourning the loss of these 2 caramel-less candy bars.

  9. ...just like Ford, the car maker. They have a great vehicle ( SHO ) and they stop making it. I would love a 2007, 8 9 10 Ford Taurus Sho! But my biggest thrill would be to be able to once again taste that “ to die for, “ BarNone candy bar!

  10. I wish they’d bring the original, non-caramel version back.  I loved that candy bar. I don’t think the version with caramel tasted like Twix though, Twix was different, and IMO better than the corrupted version of Bar None they put out.  On a tangent, Cadbury’s Flakes are quite good, but they are different than Bar None.

  12. I was disappointed when they stopped making the New Coke, the Lexus LS 400 and changed the Whatchamacallit. But, I darn near had to have therapy when they changed the Barnone. I used to buy those things like crack or something.

If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fixed it people!

Is there any kind of advocacy group for people who are trying to get the old Barnone back?

  15. I’m just about tired of Hershey’s milk chocolate anyway. But the one way I would still eat the heck out of it is if they would reintroduce the BarNone.  It was one scrumdiddilyumptious candy bar. I’d still be eating Hershey’s if they made it.

  16. I finally found people who understand my pain!!!  I have bugged my husband with this for the last 9 years (since we met).  He had never heard of them (and he’s 9 years older than me!) neither have all the people I’ve asked.  I thought I was nuts.  I finally thought of checking online.  I loved my Bar None!!!  What were they thinking when they added caramel and then kicked it to the curb!!!  They had the right idea in the beginning. HERSHEY’S you must bring it back !!!

  17. I really loved this candy bar. The chocolate was the best even in comparing it to the finer ones like Godiva, I’d choose BarNone. But seeing how it has effected all of us maybe that’s why it was discontinued. It was so addictive. I eventually got hooked on Muddy Bears. They’re no Bar None, but a decent chocolate mixed with my favorite candy.

  18. The Bar None candy bar I remember was yellow, unlike the Mexican blue version and it was just my most favourite candy bar ever.  A while back it was reproduced in Asia but it didn’t taste the same as it did back in the 80s.  I am one with the rest of the commenters here who would like to bring this candy bar back.

    Bring BAR NONE back!!!

  21. OMG!!! I JUST CAME BACK FROM A RETRO CANDY SHOPPE AND THE FIRST THING I ASKED FOR WAS THE “BARNONE”!!!!!!!!!! WHY WOULD THEY DISCONTINUE IT??? Does anyone, by any chance, also remember a white chocolate candy bar with small pieces of almonds in it? I can’t remember the name of it and it’s driving me bonkers! ANYWAY, has anyone looked into the petition for Hershey’s? Or tried to contact Hershey’s?

Comment by Betty on 9/14/07 at 5:20 pm

  22. I used to buy at least 6 of them a day.  I was indeed a Bar None junkie.  Evangelical was my love, for I would share the word, preach the gospel and eat the candy!  It was a perfect candy bar.  Just enough nuts to not piss you off, crunchy wafers that weren’t too crunchy, enough yummy creamy chocolatey goodness, that well, was perfection.

I remember hearing at the time, people describe it “like a chocolate twix” and perhaps Hershey’s decided that would be the route to take, except for one thing, we were eating Bar None’s, not Twix.

When they changed it, my heart broke.  I don’t think I’ve ever really wanted a candy bar since then.

  23. There never has, nor will there ever be a chocolate bar like the Bar None.  The great mystery here is why the hell Hershey’s ever discontinued it.  To answer #21’s question, I did contact Hershey’s, and they responded that “Yes, they discontinued it” (no shit), and that they “Had no plans to bring it back”.  I would be willing to start a petition if need be.  I am in Atlanta, but would be willing to make a pilgrimage to Hershey if that’s what it takes.  Please make comment if you are also willing to sign a petition.

  24. Wow… I too thought I was the only one who missed the caramel-free Bar None.  It truly was perfection.  I just tried the Nestle Crunch Crisp, which reminded me so much of the Bar None.  Enough to satisfy the craving, but still not the same.  It needs the peanuts instead of the crispy stuff.

Comment by Raymond on 10/05/07 at 12:48 am

  25. Yeah I remember them from when I was a kid. Me and mom still talk about them to this day. I remember the Dark brown/black wrappers and the yellow wrappers with the blue letters on them. Not even the limited triple chocolate Kit-Kat bar could hold a candle to Bar-None. Take 5 was cool at first but I got burned out on them really fast. It’s as if they never really cared about the quality of the “waffle pretzels” they put in the bars so some of them could taste really um… odd. The Bar-None was also a good example of the old adage,"Less is more” not a lot going on with the ingredients but the taste and quality of the bars was perhaps too good for it’s own good. I will now see about going to Mexico some time in the near future as these would be a great gift for my mom and others who miss the Greatest Candy Bar of All Time ^_^

  26. I tried a new candy bar earlier today that reminded me of something but I just couldn’t put my finger on what it was- it finally hit me tonight- it was the Bar None that it reminded me of!  I loved that candy bar in the late 80’s!!  Anyway, the candy bar I had today was the new Nestle Crunch Crisp bar- it is wafers, chocolate creme & a few Nestle Crunchies on top all wrapped in milk chocolate- may be worth a shot for those missing Bar None!  Not the same- but similar…

  27. I really miss a big 5 cent candy bar that I loved as a child in the late 1940’s. It was a stack of the thin wafers (vanilla) with white filling between each wafer.  The bar was dipped in milk chocolate.  From what I remember, it looked a lot like the one with the white in it of Le Chocolatier.  Does anyone remember the name of it?  It was So Good!

  28. I am quite delighteed to see that I am not the only one fondly remembering Bar None.  All that I can remember about it was that it could scratch the itch of a bonafide chocoholic like me.  Perhaps Hersheys simply is not interested in the profit generated by this product.  Maybe someone else would like to produce it?  I think that commentator #21’s white chocolate candy bar is perhaps the Zero.  It is the only whte chocolate bar I know of. I also miss a candy bar called “7-up” bar.  It was great.

This was the candy bar of my teen years, I use to love putting them in the fridge and eating them on a hot summer’s day or a late night snack. Okay, I seriously cannot believe that #31 put the link to the Nestle’s Alpine White commercial on here...I must have been 7 or 8 when that commercial came out and to this day will every once in a while bust out singing that song...people never have a clue what the h I’m talking about. But I totally loved that commercial!!! And as for Bar None’s, in the late 80s I had a friend whose grandparents owned a candy store in Savannah and everytime they came to Knoxville to visit, they’d bring a box or two of Bar None’s.  I was obsessed with that candy bar!  I’m glad to know there are others out there that loved Bar None, too...but reading all those entries just made me want one really bad and now I’m very sad:(

  37. Ah, good to see others missing this, my favorite chocolate bar of all time!  I’ve often wondered why it was discontinued.  What were they thinking?  All these years later and I still miss that thing, still find myself talking about it and wishing it was available.  It was best when it first came out, before all the tinkering.  Yum.  I think I’ll head over and drop a note to Hershey’s, add my voice to the clamor of those wanting this reintroduced.

  38. I have found my support group! Bar None was my absolute favorite too and I have been missing it all these years still; and I agree the chocolate tasted better than fancier chocolate labels. 49. Hey Bar None Fans,

As of today there are two petitions listed in this I Miss Bar None group. The first has 1700 names and is mentioned in post #13 at http://www.petitiononline.com/BarNone/petition.html
The other has 17 names and is in post #46 at http://www.petitiononline.com/barnone/petition.html and it has 17 names. I think the bottom one should be deleted because it splits the same petition into two parts and weakens both.

I think a better movement would be to carefully research and identify some top Heresy’s brass in various departments who would get an email with all 1717+ names and the new signature EVERY TIME someone adds their name to the petition. A single email wont bring Bar None back .

It would be great if some Bar None fan would create a PERMANENT Bar None site where a unified partition could be assembled and the code is written to trigger emails to Hershey’s when a new person signs it. If Hershey’s responds, their responses could also be published on the site. I believe this would be a good and ongoing campaign to get Bar None back on the shelves and also allow for better exchange of info and excitement by us Bar None lovers.

The closest thing I’ve found is actually marketed in the cookies aisle.  They are called Flaky Flix and I think they are made by Mothers cookies.  No peanuts, but they’ve got good chocolate and the right wafers.  Extra good if you refrigerate them.  YUM.

My mother and I loved them. Why do they discontinue so many great products? You’d think Hershey’s would be chomping at the bit to get these back on the market, what with people going out of their way e-mailing them about it. What morons are working for their marketing department? That is my question…

  64. Man I was introduce to the “Bar None” as young child in the 90’s by my mom and man do I miss the way it taste. I think it was the best candy bar ever. I always talk about it and wonder if they would ever bring it back..

  65. i’m so surprised! i’m not alone missing the best chocolate in the whole universe! i never knew it was discontinued in 1996. geez, i realized my ex boyfriend really had to find ways and give me a pack of it way back in 2002… those were the last moments i savored and dwelved the creaminess of that chocolate. yes, we should keep on bugging the bosses of hershey’s to bring this chocolate back! no belgian nor swiss nor twix could even come close to this perfect sweet fix! :D
