It took me a long time to actually like Hershey’s milk chocolate. I was never fond of their Special Dark, but I ate it quite a bit when I was younger because it was often the only dark chocolate I could get my hands on easily. Sometimes a girl just needs dark chocolate. Call it medication.
I was curious when I saw this at Target a couple of weeks ago. I know that all the major chocolate companies are into this whole “chocolate as a health food thing” (which by the way, I’ve been saying for about twenty years) so it’s only natural that they start packaging stuff with that sort of market in mind.
If I were to create the ideal fruit and nut bar, I would definitely start with dark chocolate and cranberries are a good choice. I think I’d prefer cashews or pecans over macadamias (especially if we’re going healthy - pecans have a load of good stuff in them). Check out the site I link to up there, they talk about the benefit of antioxidants, which can be found in many fruits (especially dried ones), wine, tea and of course chocolate.
The bar itself was nice. A good woodsy flavor, the nuts were barely perceptible for me as a flavor but added good texture. The cranberries were a good tart, chewy snap. The chocolate was crisp, not bitter with a decent creamy melty quality and good flavor. Not the best chocolate I’ve ever had, but if this were as available as a regular Hershey bar, I’d probably pick it up as a less-sweet snack with 60% cocoa solids. The price is just right as well, a good value for less than $2.
Rating - 8 out of 10
nice find!
I had the cranberry/blueberry/almond one of these and it was really good. Not as good as the Cadbury Fruit & Nut, though, IMO.
I’ve been wanting to try this. Thanks for the review.
Mmm…encouraging trend. Hershey’s seems to be not only darkening the chocolate and emphasizing the cacoa content, but adding unexpected ingredients (I actually did a double-take at the cranberries and macadamias). It’s a nice change from the endless sweet-sweet-sweet permutations of the Nestle lines. America should be able to have a low-priced, high-quality chocolate bar, damnit!
Have a look at my sister-in-laws website her sweets are out of this world…

I too had the cranberry/blueberry/almond one. It was quite good.
Now that I’ve had the cranberry/blueberry/almond and plain (a gift bag of minis), I’m spoiled for anything else!
If you call Hershey and ask them what percentage of cocoa is in their Extra Dark Chocoalate they will quickly tell you 60%. But when you ask the percentage of cocoa in the Special Dark Chnocolate which per ounce costs less, they refuse to say, claiming it’s “propietary information.” I think they don’t want consumers to know that they can get the health benefits of cocoa far more economically with Special Dark rather than Extra Dark/
Bill - that’s an interesting observation. The thing is, I don’t like the Special Dark ... it’s a bit chalky for my tastes. But I would like to know what the cacao content is!
I wanted to let everyone know about a web site I just found that had the best candy and sweets I have ever had. [link removed by admin] The White Chocolate Party Jumble is out of this world!
Barry - thanks for the suggestion, but if you’d like to suggest a product for review, please email me. If you’d like me to include the company on my links list, please place a comment there.
For those who still care… I’ve seen special dark bars that say 45% these days.
I bought only one bar to try it out. My son had it, and he thought it was the best ever. Now I have been unable to find the bars again. Help!
Thanks
I think the difference between Special Dark and Extra Dark is that Special Dark has milk in it. You may as well be right that it has 60% but I have no idea. Maybe someone can shed some light on this gray area?
