Happy Easter to all my readers!
For those of you who have been following along, Easter marks the end of “Candy Season” which is the series of candy focused holidays starting with Halloween in October. For me Candy Season isn’t just about the special candies for each of the holidays, but also the pursuit of the extra cheap candy that goes on sale after the holiday is over. This is the chance to try all those things you might have snubbed because of price or uncertainty.
Then we have a long dry summer of candy choices. Sure, there might be some special colored M&Ms for Independence Day and of course there are fairs where you can get those special summer candies like candied apples and cotton candy but chocolate candy is de-emphasized because of the heat. Summer is all about ice cream and popsicles. Happily, promotion for Halloween comes just after “back-to-school” so good sales come quickly.
This year I’ll have no long desolate candy summer, instead I’ve been granted a press pass for the All Candy Expo in Chicago in June! So, the countdown clock over there at the right has been changed to mark that occasion. You can look forward to some unprecedented coverage of candy at that time, as I go and meet the folks who make and market all things candy.
Feel free to post comments here about the fantastic sales you’ve found after Easter as we all stock up on cheap candy favorites for the months ahead!
Perhaps the most Easteresque addition to the Candy world we have had over here in the UK this year, is the latest extension of the Cadbury’s Dairy Milk range. They’re always adding new ones with different fillings - Turkish Delight, caramel, wafer, biscuit, mint…
This year however, they took their Creme Egg, which you reviewed recently I believe, and made it into a bar! It’s a lot easier to handle, though kind of defeats the object of an Egg.
The Food Network aired their special about last year’s All Candy Expo. For an hour at the end of the expo they let a few kids in. Being only 14 years old, I envy them. It’s sorta my dream to one day go there, almost as a pilgimage. However, for now I’m perfectly content with my M&Ms; and Smarties.
Happy Easter to you too!
I can’t wait to hear all about the expo in June! That’s so exciting, my tastebuds are tingling in anticipation!
As for after Easter sales…I always go for the Strawberry Eggs by Russell Stover and the Cadbury Creme Egg. :D
Happy Easter!
The All Candy Expo sounds like a good time. I have my eyes on eventually heading out for it, but first I want to aim for the Intrenational Chocolate Show.
I’m heading out for some bargain hunting tomorrow after work. I don’t expect to come home with much more than Peeps but you never know what you’ll find (which is probably the thing I like best).
candy expo in chicago… *jealous* haha
Wow! Ever since I heard about the All Candy Expo I’ve wanted to go. Very jealous here! I just hope the Sweets Expo in Toronto is good… but I’m sure it won’t compare to Chicage. Can’t wait for you to tell us all how wonderful it is.
I can beat any Easter sales that anyone (hasn’t) posted.
Yesterday, Easter Sunday, at the local Shop n’ Save: FREE PEEPS. Oh yeah.
The Candy Expo sounds intriguing and fun - congratulations on snagging that pass!
Independence Day for us is marked by tootsie rolls wrapped in red, white, and blue wrappers. Our town has a parade, with the obligatory candy throwers, and probably a third of them are throwing the r,w,&b tootsie rolls!
And for sales: we were visiting my parents this past week and I went to Walgreen’s on Monday or Tuesday and I was sorely disappointed that they had absolutely no maple creme eggs (but plenty other flavors). So then I was surprised to find piles of candy at their Target on Thursday - 75% off - it seemed like a bigger selection that at the Target in my town the week before Easter! I couldn’t really stock up, though, since we were spending time in the desert before flying home.
