Fresh Cola Mentos

I love getting candy from friends who travel. I love being surprised by candy that I didn’t even know existed. Finally, I love getting Mentos.

My friend Ernessa went to Belgium. While she brought me a wonderful box of Galler bonbons (we ate half the box after dinner on Saturday night, eschewing fresh peach pie for it), I was most excited about these: Mentos Fresh Cola.

Mentos Fresh Cola

It seems natural that a candy that’s become world famous for fountains made from putting the mints in diet soda bottles would eventually have an actual cola flavored version. (But strange that it’s not available in the United States.)

The wrapper has the familiar red color that many colas adopt for their packaging.

The pieces look a bit like fizzy cola. They’re light beige, but a little mottled, like there are bubbles.

The flavor is absolutely cola, a bit tangy like light lemon with a woodsy spice to it. It tastes fizzy, though that’s probably just my imagination. There’s a little spicy flavor in there, like cinnamon or nutmeg. It’s a bit sweeter than I’d like (but that’s kind of why I don’t drink soda anyway).

As I don’t drink soda, it’s nice to be able to get my cola flavor somewhere else. In a world of few cola options, these are a fantastic option. I think all that’s missing is the little dose of caffeine.

  1. I heart cola candy and I really want some of these.  If only there were Belgian specialty stores around here…

  2. Looks like you can buy them online from a store in Washington state: http://www.marinamarket.com/istar.asp?a=6&id=21802

They sound good to me, too!

  3. I wonder how they’d handle being dropped in Coke. I’d hope for some sort of self-referential implosion, maybe resulting in a black hole of awesomeness.

I’ll add these to my Belgian shopping list. Thanks for your review.

  4. I find it slightly strange that you write a candy blog- but don’t consume soda.

Its not crazy- just odd- as these two consumables have been together for a long time.

I’m also a soda connoisseur- and though I don’t write a blog on your scale- I do believe I think about soda to the same degree you think about candy.

Thanks for the candy- and try a soda!

  5. I just tried my first non-mint Mentos flavor (strawberry) and have decided to track down as many different flavors as I can—I’ll have to add this to the list. I love your reviews, btw—they’re so informative.

  6. We have several different flavors of Mentos in Israel, black licorice being my personal favorite!  And we have cola-flavored gum with jelly/liquid centers and cola gummies.  I’ll have to mail you some.

  7. These look like something I would love. I love cola bottle gummies and used to chew cherry cola bubble gum all the time when I was a kid.

  8. Wow, talk about coincidence! I just bought these (I’m in Holland). They sure are nice, most of the time I finish the whole roll in one day…

  10. Just got back from trip to U.K. and my husband and daughter fell in love with the Cola Mentos. Searched all over airport and stores in Paris before returning to USA but no luck. Tried the website in Washington state and they are out of stock. Anybody out there with suggestions?

  11. Just picked some up at a local Dutch import shop North of Toronto (Canada). Not quite the cola taste I expected but still good. I also grabbed the Grape and Watermelon flavours, and some Paprika flavoured Lay’s chips, haven’t tried them yet.

  14. I finally found some! At a gas station in the south of Holland. I bought one roll to try out for my road trip to Bruges. Once in Belgium I bought 15 more rolls to bring home with me to the states. Thanks for the heads up, I’ve been excited to come over here and find some since I read this post!

  15. I’ve had a weird obsession with Mentos since I was in Jr. High. Anytime friends are traveling outside of the country I always ask them to bring me back Mentos not found in the States, so far 11 flavors. Anyone willing to buy and send me flavors not in the US, I’ll pay!

  21. I recently bought a package of Mini Mentos Party Drinks which included Lemon Soda, Strawberry Soda, and Cola. There was a single tube of cola in the entire package. The cola was good, the lemon okay, and the strawberry had a strong medicinal initial taste which I think was there attempt to replicate the soda flavour.

I also got a tube of one of the new Mentos ‘n Cream line- this one was Caramel n’ Cream. It was nice, with good burnt sugar notes. Not really as good as the real thing though.
