Elvis Reese’s Peanut Butter and Banana Cup

imageMusic may be called ear candy at times, but it really doesn’t intersect with candy much. I’m not sure why, they’re easy to enjoy together, though candy always won out for my spending money as a kid. (I owned very little music as a teen, the only singles I remember buying were Blondie’s Call Me & John Lennon’s Starting Over, instead I just listened to whatever albums were in the house, hence my love of the Beatles and The Who.)

Besides the Charleston Chew, which is named after a dance and song, I don’t think there are many music-themed candy bars out there. Even though there’s not much proof of concept, Hershey’s has high hopes for their limited edition Elvis Reese’s Peanut Butter and Banana Cream Cups. The early announcement of them last year sent quite a wave of enthusiasm through the internet, especially blogs where people were searching desperately. They are slated to go on sale in advance of the 30th anniversary of his death on July 7th.

image

The cups showed up earlier this year on eBay, as merchants where were given preview cups to try before they buy sold them off for a quick buck or two. (Some were going as high as $5.00 a piece.) I’ll admit that I bid on a few. As luck would have it, the same contact at Hershey’s who sent me the Fresh From The Factory Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups came through last week with these beauties. A whole tin filled with the Big Cup (King Size!) Elvis-themed cups.

imageThe packaging for this variety features Hawaiian Elvis, sporting sideburns and a purple lei. The back of the package features trivia about Elvis: “Priscilla Ann Beaulieu was 14 years old when she met Elvis Presley.” Ah, give the young girls something to aspire to. (Other packages mention his record sales and movie career.) None mentioned the King’s love of fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches, the progenitor for this candy.

The cups smell like roasted peanuts with a slight sweet tinge of chocolate. Before biting into them, there’s really no indication that they’re different. The Big Cups are pretty hefty, and after eating the smaller-than-normal Fresh From the Factory Cups, I feel rather huge.

Once I bit into them though, the banana-ness was apparent. It’s a soft and floral banana taste in a “banana cream” that’s rather firm, kind of like a banana white chocolate, but not as smooth. The label lists banana flakes as an ingredient. (As well as artificial flavor and artificial color.)

I tried these several ways. I ate them fresh out of the package, I tried them frozen and I tried them a gooey melted mess after letting them sit under the hot studio light. Frozen the banana lacks zing, but of course the texture is great. At room temperature, the banana has a nice mellow flavor. At body temperature the banana cream gets really thick and creamy and tastes a lot more like banana.

imageI was kind of hoping that they’d use the model of the Caramel Cup and just make the caramel banana flavored. The cream is interesting and carries the flavor well over the very strong peanut butter. All I can say is that it works for me. I don’t know if I’d buy these instead of the regular Reese’s, but I’m curious what the miniatures are going to be like and I’ll probably give those a try.

For another preview of the Elvis Cups, check out Patti at Candy Yum Yum.

Now comes the time where I share the wealth. Yes, you too can be the first on your block to try the new Elvis King Size Reese’s Peanut Butter and Banana Creme Cups. I’ll do a drawing on Saturday, June 16th at Noon Pacific ... the grand prize will be FIVE fresh packages. Just leave a comment here with your favorite Elvis tune or Elvis Cup sighting ... I’ve heard that they’re already showing up in stores like Dollar General. Use a real email address if you’d like me to contact you if you win, and I’d advise not checking the box for notification of comments, cuz there may be a few. I also reserve the right to throw more candy into the winner package, depending on my whim and inventory at the moment. North American addresses only.

(Ooh, thanks to the comments, I found this on the Hershey’s Gift Site, you can order them right now, a tin of 16 packages of the King Sized cups is $25.)

UPDATE: We have a winner (Lisa!) ... but you’re free to comment. If you’re looking for tips on where to find Elvis Cups, check out this post called Elvis Spotting.

  30. I will risk having spoiled bananas hurled at me by admitting that I’m not that much of an Elvis fan overall, but would go with “Suspicious Minds” as the song of his I like most.

I AM a big fan of peanut butter and banana, however, so I ordered these last week when I got an email about them from Hershey’s.  I hadn’t heard of them or seen them anywhere before then, but I somehow knew I’d be reading about them here in short order.  smile

  33. Does anyone else remember a time when the banana-and-peanut-butter combination was allowed to stand on its own delicious merits, without the Elvis connection?

Not that I’m against Elvis!  I love “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You.”  And I get a kick out of playing his cover of “Amazing Grace” a at least once a semester when I teach—it has a very real connection with my subject matter, but it’s pretty much the last thing college students expect when they walk into my class.

Comment by good enough cook on 6/11/07 at 8:33 am #
  34. Like Maura, not much on Elvis, but the first song that comes to mind is “Blue Suede Shoes.” That would make an interesting confection! Blue shoe - gummy or boiled sugar? And how to get the suede-like texture? Hmmm….

p.s. you wrote I don?t think there are many candy themed candy bars out there - did you mean to write “music themed candy bars” ?

Comment by Tricia on 6/11/07 at 8:37 am #
  35. I enjoy “Suspicious Minds” - my friends in college used to sing along to this after a few drinks.

  37. It’s so hard to choose a favorite song! But I guess “Can’t Help Falling in Love” would be at the top of   the list. I’m not a fan of bananas in general, but I’ve had a big Elvis craving for these cups!! Will they have them in miniature? I luv me some minis.

Comment by Kate on 6/11/07 at 8:56 am #
  38. My favorite song is “Can’t Help Falling In Love.” Always makes me feel romantic. And speaking of love, I adore eating banana with peanut butter, but I usually mash them all up together so it’s the consistency of baby food or something. I know that seems kinda gross but it’s the best flavor combination… I’m definitely on the lookout for these cups!

Comment by Marika on 6/11/07 at 9:05 am #
  39. Elvis themed Resee’s?! Too cool! My favorite Elvis song is Blue Suede Shoes with Hound Dog as a close second.

My favorite Elvis song is “Burning Love.” I was about 11 when Elvis died, and I remember lying on my bed, sweating (July in Pennsylvania), listening to an all-day radio tribute and feeling very, very sad. Would never have tried these without your review.  Not usually a big fan of banana in any form other than the way God made it.  Now, I’ll have to at least give it a taste!  Thanks for your great descriptions and honesty about the candy you try!!!

  95. My favorite song is “Are You Lonesome Tonight” though I do also love the cover of “I can’t help falling in love with you.” mmmm, I really want one of these Elvis PB Cups now!

  96. Holy crackers!  Talk about a lot of comments.

This is one of those items I really want to try.  I love the Reese’s cups to death and I think that banana might just be a good twist on it.

And country and gospel Elvis FTW.

  97. The hand clapping, foot stomping classic “Clam Bake” is the best all-time Elvis song (and movie!)

Comment by Mary on 6/12/07 at 6:01 am #
  98. I LOVE banana… I can’t wait until I can find these around here.

I know this is a very popular answer but Jailhouse Rock has a very special place in my heart. I choreographed a dance to it and sang it in a school play in Elementary School… ahhh memories. You’ll Think Of Me is also a great one.

  99. I have so many favorite Elvis songs and movies. Follow that Dream, Flaming Star, Blue Hawaii, Viva Las Vegas are some of the movies I like. I love all of Elvis’ songs and listen to them depending on my mood. He had a fabulous voice and watching and listening to him was a special way my mom and I bonded when I was growing up.

  100. I would have to pick Suspicious Minds as my favorite Elvis song.  This is the 1st that I have heard about this new Reese’s cup - it sounds facinating.

  101. My favorite Elvis song is I Can’t Help Falling in Love with you.

I once made the fried peanut butter and banana sandwich for my husband.  It was too heavy for me, but he loved it!

  102. Favorite Elvis song is his version of “Always on My Mind.”  These PB/Banana Cups sound promising…appreciate your review (and all your others…I always look forward to them).

  103. Haha. I looked and looked, physicaly and virtually, but all I found were yours, the junk food blog’s, and Candy Yum Yum’s reviews. I was all excited, too, when I thought I was the first to find a picture of the elusive miniatures on Flickr, only to discover it was your picture. XP

Ah, well. My favorite Elvis song would probably be “All Shook Up,” because of my memories of dancing to it Forrest Gump style when I was four in my little footie-pajamas.

  104. My favorite Elvis tune is “One Night With You.”

fun fact!—- It was originally a song called “one night of sin,” which was deemed too risque, necessatating some lyrical alterations.

I didn’t get them because fake banana flavored candy just doesn’t appeal to me, but after reading your review, I’m ready to try them.

  128. It may not be my favorite per se, because honestly picking a favorite Elvis tune is a bit like picking your favorite Shakespearean sonnet.  There are so many and they’re (almost) all great.  I’ll go with “In the Ghetto” since, as most commentors have sad, it packs an emotional whallop with me.

Comment by Scott on 6/13/07 at 8:32 am #
  129. “All Shook Up” is one of my favorites.  Which ironically describes how I felt when I found out about these.  I love chocolate, peanut butter, AND bananas, so this little treat sounds like nirvana to me.

  140. I would be lying if I said I had a favorite Elvis song, or if I said that I’ve spotted these cups in my area. I’d also be lying if I said I liked all of Elvis’ songs, or that I enjoyed every number one that he had.

Though, I can honestly say that my favorite Elvis moment isn’t really anything “Elvis” - it’s Lilo and Stitch, which used more Elvis songs then any Elvis movie I can recall. That and Stitch dressed as Elvis was hilarious. Possibly the best Disney movie in recent years that wasn’t done by Pixar.

  143. I was vacationing in Southern California and Southern Arizona.  I was visiting a good friend in Sierra Vista, Arizona when my husband & I decided to head over to the Walgreen’s to see if they had any souvenir t-shirts.  They had some nice t-shirts and to my surprise I found an Elvis peanut butter cup at the register.  It was absolutely delicious!!!  I used to be a groupie for a famous Elvis impersonator in Cleveland,Ohio.
His stage name was Marc Roberts.  He had an awesome voice and he used to give out those silk scarfs.  I loved most of Elvis’s songs.  I visited Graceland in 1982, I highly recommend!!!

You can find these at WALMART now.  I only managed to find the mini ones though.

  147. My favorite ELVIS song at this moment is “YOUNG and BEAUTIFUL” from his 1957 movie “JAILHOUSE ROCK”. Ask me in a few minutes and it may be “I GOT STUNG” or “DOWN IN THE ALLEY”. With 700+ recordings, I can only say my least favorite is “CHARRO”. Greatest voice ever to be heard!    Walgreen’s Drug Stores has the 2 pack for $1.00 and Kroger grocery stores have the miniature packages for $2.00 in Greater Cincinnati, Ohio.

  153. I picked up the mini cups at Target last night, they were on clearance, only 20 cents cheaper.  These are great! Don’t know how I missed the others. The mini cups don’t have the banana creme on the inside, but a yummy banana flavor coating on the outside. I’m going back to buy the rest of the packages before I never find them again!

Comment by Kimberly on 9/27/07 at 9:38 am #
  154. Me again.  I found a deal at Ralphs for the Elvis PB cups, 5 for $1! Guess they were trying to get rid of as many as possible, also the mini cups were 2 for $4.

  155. The candy didn?t have a distinct packaging, as in, my friend bought it on accident (mistaken for the original).

Then I volunteered to try it…

And it was really terrible. It tasted like a peanut butter cup with a layer of taffy like chemicals. It was god-awful.

Comment by Brittany on 10/22/07 at 10:56 am #
  156. Brittany: message 155…
I found the packaging to be quite distinct. The picture of Elvis and the words Peanut Butter and (BANANA) convinced me to buy one two-cup package. My personal assessment is that the candy was HEAVENLY and not GOD AWFUL (pun). But, to each their own! I purchased dozens of 2 pack bars and 20 packages of the mini cups to distribute to family, friends, employees and customers. Only one person disliked the taste. Others keep coming back for more. So, if you have any leftovers, please forward them to me. I can put them to good use. Thanks, RAY

Comment by RAY on 10/22/07 at 2:25 pm #
  157. These cups are a Godsend. I thought Reese could never outdo their original peanut butter cup goodness. Boy was I wrong. The added banana sends feelings of euphoria through my brain. Its like smoking a joint, but not as foggy. I hope they never take it away.

also he was allergic to peanuts….
