Curly WurlyName: Curly Wurly
Brand: Cadbury Place Purchased: India Sweets & Spices Price: $.99 Size: 26 grams Calories per ounce: dunno Type: Caramel Upon reading Steve Almond’s Candy Freak (one of these days I’ll put up a comprehensive review), I found out that the discontinued bar from the 70s called Marathon is kind of available in the UK as Cadbury’s Curly Wurly.
![]() The concept behind this bar is simple. A loosely braided caramel plank is covered in milk chocolate. And they did it beautifully. The bar smells of carmelized sugar, very sweet. The caramel is soft but plenty chewy. I find it’s important to give the bar a good bite or else you’ll end up with little bits of chocolate flaking off on your clothes. Now, with that out of the way, does anyone else know what curly wurly means? I’m familiar with it from the lyrics to Blinded by the Light:
Tell me, what is this curly wurly that Early Pearly is riding in? Rating - 8 out of 10 (it’s gotta be easier to find for me to give it tops) Related CandiesPOSTED BY Cybele AT 11:40 am 8-Tasty • Cadbury • Caramels • Chocolate • United Kingdom • Candy • Review •

This was posted in your LJ:
“curly wurly” is early century east coast slang for “curly hair” (ringlets); “in” is also early century east coast slang for “wearing;” “early-pearly” is a morning person.
Ooh, I definitely have to try malteasers. I’ve heard of them but haven’t run across them yet. (But the Whoppers Twosomes are pretty satisfying right now.)
Sainsbury’s is a ways to go for me, maybe next time I’m over on the westside I’ll make sure to stop by.
Cybele, you can find Curly Wurlys over at Sainsburys on Wilshire. Just got one myself, and they are deeeeeelish!
I also recommend the Malteasers (available in both white and milk chocolate). They are, as you can guess by the name, malted milk balls. Greatly superior to Whoppers, though not quite as good as the Good Harvests (?) kind they sell at Ralphs.
music fan, I think you’re confused. Springsteen wrote Blinded by the Light. The more well known version of the song was done by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. Perhaps you’re thinking of Rundgren’s “Bang on the Drum All Day.”

SPRINGSTEEN??? how’s about TODD RUNDGREN, ya dope. does liking marathon bars automatically guarantee you’re an idiot? i mean, jeez
I also was a big Marathon fan, threw a fit when they were discontinued. I think the “Blinded by the Light” reference might be to a helicopter. Who knows what Springsteen was thinking about back then.
I loved Marathon bars. I must have this Curly Wurly!!
These are really good cold or frozen, too, and less chocolate gets on your shirt. You do run the risk of breaking your teeth, though.
I found CurlyWurly bars at BevMo in West Hollywood. They had several Cadbury chocolates, not as many as India Sweets and Spices, though. It was mighty tasty, and seeing the braided candy was a real blast from the past!
I love Curly Wurlys!
I remember when those Marathon bars were introduced, and they were pretty good. I remember, too, being disappointed at first because I thought I was getting a huge candy bar, only to find it was mostly air, but that was before I bit into it.
And now I’ve learned about early-pearlies, ins, and curly wurlies.
strangely, in the UK we used to have a Marathon bar as well, but it was renamed Snickers in the late 1980s
Must. Have. Curly. Wurly.
So loved the Marathon bar...so hate that Snickers has usurped the name for it’s “energy” bar.

Odd how everyone has a music connection to this one. Personally, it reminds me of “Slang King” by the Fall.
“…
3 little girls with only 50 pence
Had to take and had to put
The curly wurly back
