Chewy Spree: Original & Mix’d Berry
So info is kind of scant. Sprees came along sometime after SweeTarts, which came after Pixy Stix and Lik-m-Aid and were made by Sunline (Sunmark) brands (a little history here). I remember eating them as a kid. I loved the bright colors and the sound they made in my pocket (or when I unwrapped them from their roll and put them in the Gold Mine Gum bag I had because they both had that sunshine sweet juicyfruit scent). Sunline later sold out to Nestle which kind of folded the candies under the Wonka brand. The product, however, was happily unchanged except for the swap of Green Apple for Lime a few years back.
The original Sprees are a compressed dextrose tart with a bright candy shell. The Chewy Spree, however, is less tart. I don’t know why, but it is. They’re a mellow version of the Spree, which I’m guessing sets it apart from the much bolder SweeTarts Shockers, which have a sour flavored candy shell and tart chewy inside. They come in Grape, Orange, Lemon, Green Apple and Strawberry, otherwise known as the “don’t rock the boat” flavors of middle/later children.
The package, however, gives little indication about what’s inside. Simply called Mix’d Berry, it occured to me that besides telling us that it’s a kick in the mouth, Spree packages offer no explanation of what they are. Most candies do! (And I often like to dissect those statements.) There’s no listing of flavors, and even the colors on the front of the package bear little resemblance to the real-life ones.
Then I realized I didn’t figure out which color was which flavor, so I had to stop at the 7-11 this morning and buy another package. And for the life of me, after actually paying attention, I can’t figure it out. Pink tastes like watermelon to me. I don’t think that’s a berry, even a mix’d one. Blue is raspberry, not terribly tart or intense, it has a good fragrant quality to it. The other two, I just didn’t know what they were. And after two packages, you’d think I would have figured it out. Purple might be mixed berry or maybe blueberry. I’ve never been good at figuring out what “flavor” blueberry is in candies. Red has me completely flummoxed. I suppose it could be Cherry? They’re pretty, but I think I’ll stick with the regular hard Sprees. Chewy Sprees have egg albumen in them, so are not suitable for vegans.

Commenting is not available in this channel entry.I so dislike when candy companies ‘switch out’ flavors, like the lime for green apple! I love limes, stop messing with a good thing! I didn’t know they changed it, shows how long it’s been since I’ve had sprees, lol! I prefer the candy shell of the spree as opposed to the sour part, oddly enough.
But the chewy sounds good…have they been out for a while?
Hmm. I’m not a huge fan of Sprees (SweeTarts are what I like) but they’re not bad. However, I may have to try the berry type just to see if I can figure out what they are. Haven’t seen any here in Seattle, though.
Hey, nice to see someone else from Seattle. I was never partial to SweeTarts myself, but I always thought watermelons were berries. Just thought I’d throw that out there. They have the seeds inside the flesh, which I think makes them a berry.
When Spree first came out (or at least when I first noticed them) in the late 60’s/early 70’s, they were marketed in pouches that were designed to sit upright in their vending box. They also had scenes on the front of meadows and flowers and such that referenced feminine hygiene product advertising of the day more than anything else. The font used was very cursive. Needless to say, my friends all thought they were girly and wouldn’t buy them. I think they were going for a more adult/mature, but obviously also more feminine appeal.
I don’t know if they were part of Sunline brands at that point or not. I do know that by the mid 70’s, they were being sold in rolls as you remember, along with most of the other pressed sugar candies. But at first, they were at least an attempt to be something different.
I used to love Chewy Spree. I’ll have to try to find the mixed berry to see if I can decipher any of the flavors.
And I am also a fan of lime and not of green apple candy, so this whole swapping of the green is highly irritating to me.
I agree, I hate when companies swap out lime for apple. It’s the same with the Lik A Stik (I just got one of those “retro” candy collections as a gift and this one was included). I have such good memories of that candy but it’s so gross now with apple.
Bring back lime Spree!! I recently re-discoverd them and have been wondering why the green ones tasted funny—now I know. Probably the same evil people that killed off lemon Jolly Ranchers.
The “original” (hard) rolls are still available—I get them at the Chevron by my house.
I also remember the very first packets with the photographs on them.
I’m pretty sure the red ones in the regular hard and chewy Spree is Cherry, not Strawberry.
I love chewy spree, my favorites being grape and cherry. The texture is nice and i found you can in them in several different ways. Great movie candy. I haven’t found Mix’d Berry Spree though.
Pink- May be strawberry.
Red- I think it is cherry, or it may be red pillowberry.
Blue- Is blueberry flavor.
Purple- May be marionberry, huckleberry, or blackberry? Is possibly black pillowberry.
Red Spree does not taste like it used to.
I am gonna be a vegan when I grow up, so I’m making a list of candies that are suitable for vegans. Chewy Spree is rejected because it contains egg albumen.
I love the chewy spree! My favorites are orange and green. The orange taste like fruit loops and the green taste like the candy apply suckers I used to eat at Halloween as a kid. :3
