Caramel Apple Sugar Babies

Caramel Apple Sugar BabiesIt took me a while to find the new Caramel Apple Sugar Babies, but I have to be honest, I wasn’t really looking forward to them.

I like Sugar Babies, in fact, I love them. They’re just fine the way they are. They don’t need to be improved ... but I suppose if they want to expand the line, that’s fine with me.

Okay, I’ll open my mind a little and at least try them.

Caramel Apple Sugar BabiesThe candies are regular Sugar Babies covered in a green, sour apple coating. As you can see from the photo, they’re kind of freaky. The green coating is really green, but it’s also kind of matte, not shiny like Sugar Babies.

They reminded me of Shrek. Like Shrek’s skin ... probably not an appealing association.

The flavor coating is tart and a little crumbly, kind of like the SweeTart Jelly Beans. The green apple flavor isn’t really intense, but a good counterpoint to the sweet, creamy and grainy caramel.

I don’t think they’re an improvement on Sugar Babies, just something different. It’s an interesting take on the caramel application on apples, but doesn’t really capture that experience at all (for one, it’s inside out!). So even though I wasn’t that keen on them, I did end up eating the whole box, so they must be pretty tasty!

I’m very late in getting a hold of these, so if this seems a little familiar you may have read about them before: Sera’s review at Candy Addict, Jeanna at Wisconsin Candy Dish and Sugar Hog.

  1. Oooo, can’t wait to try these!  I’m slowly working through the box...now that the required pictures have been taken I can start eating.  Last night I tried the hot cocoa and green tea kisses.  Loved hot cocoa and really liked the green tea although the green tea was pretty subtle, and I was expecting more of a hit-me-over-the-head taste.

  2. I stumbled upon these a few weeks ago and was excited - something that had not been reviewed on Candy Blog yet? Score! Seemed like an interesting combo.

After eating a few, however, I found the taste combination did not work for me at all. And the sour artificial apple flavor lingered on too long at the back of my mouth, making me feel kinda grossed out.  I still shudder when I think about eating these. I’ll stick to the original. They should make a pumpkin spice or orange version. Those might work better.

  3. I got a box at the expo, and wasn’t too big of a fan. The flavor wasn’t all that bad, but every time I try a caramel apple candy, I find myself wishing I had a real caramel apple, and throwing the fake version away.

Also, I hate candy that gets horribly stuck in my teeth.

  4. I tried these last week and thought they were horrid! I only took one handful and it left a horrible taste in my mouth. I thought there would be more caramel taste but instead it was that horrible chemical-like apple flavor that was overpowering. I actually threw the box out.

  12. We just opened a large box of Sugar Babies and found one green one inside. I understand now that it is the carmel apple flavor, but was there any kind of contest of promotion to see who could find a green one in their box or was this just so you could sample? The box did not mention it at all. Please give me some input. I have it put away in case it’s worth a million dollars.

  16. This is the best candy ever, my favorite combo: caramel and green apple.  I have found them at chain supermarkets (Safeway in CA) and gas stations (Holiday in MN).
