Candy Blox

I dunno why I bought these, but I’ve seen then online a few times and when I was at Munchies a few weeks ago, I just had to give them a try.

They’re a compressed dextrose candy (what I call chalk candy) shaped like Lego building blocks. They’re about the same size and work the same, only without the firm snap to keep things together. Some of my little candies were actually missing their nubs, but they had enough to build little walls and stuff.

They were actually different flavors:

White - Pineapple - tart and a little bitter, but really tasty.
Blue - Raspberry - not much to recommend it. More like the flavor blue.
Orange - Orange - kind of like Tang, tart and less than zesty.
Yellow - Banana - yum. I have a soft spot for banana flavored candies.
Red - Cherry - yeah, you know I’m not gonna like this one.
Purple - Grape - the color was strange but the taste as okay.
Green - Lime - nice and vibrant but not really that tasty.

They were very hard and very dense, so crunching on them wasn’t really that easy. They were more for sucking, but of course they’re kind of pointy.

I know I don’t sound excited by them, but I actually liked them quite a bit. I would buy them again, but probably only for a project. Or maybe just because I want something to play with on my desk. If I got them from a bulk bin I’d probably pull out just the yellow, white and orange ones. I think by the pound they’re cheaper than Lego.

How cool would it be if they made candy Lego-ish mini-figures?

  2. I would love to find a local source of these for birthday party bags! (I know someone in Florida who got them for that purpose.) And you’re right, $4.50/lb is cheaper than bulk Legos, especially if you buy direct from Lego, but not if you manage to find an auction that sneaks by without getting noticed… :^)

  3. I actually found eggo waffles that were built like lego.  They didn’t work at all.  The candy looks a lot more fun, but I think the waffles beat chalk candy for taste.

  6. Hey Cybele!  Love your blog!  I really enjoyed the little lego candies, specially the green one.  The blue ones didn’t have much of a taste, did they?

  8. We buy these every year for our Themed gingerbread making. This year was White Trash, so you KNOW each trailer had to be propped up on these!

I’m not sure if I’ve ever actually eaten one, though!

  11. Adam - I got them here in LA:

    Munchies
    8859 West Pico Blvd.
    Los Angeles, CA 90035

They sell them in the bulk bins. Yeah, about $8 a pound, but you can just pick up what you need. I also saw them at Ralphs (in Glendale under the Cost Plus and Barnes & Noble).

  15. I am lucky to have a world class bin section by my house to get stuff for the movies in candies, snacks and other things with free coffee.  The Lego candy is part of it.  Unfortunately I do not buy rip-offs, espeically when I have so much more to choose from at the section which is extensive and they encourage free sampling while Hugh Heffner Jazz is playing on the speaker.  Anyway the major problem with the product is I can only build walls with it.  I can see that if we are given a red brick and Chuck Brown and Linus in Lego form.  But where are the windows, the roof pieces, the mini-trees, the doors, my god they should have a candy house for birthdays and a contest at stores to win one or something else.  Concord Confections is either lazy or cheap- this is a really bad variation of starting to decorate your house for Christmas and then never finishing the job.  Did Lego not license stuff?  And then it’s a cool gimmick but why don’t I buy the real deal and make amazing stuff and get something that is good from Concord as a stand-alone product not because it is a knock-off of the original.  I’d say I’d just go Pez but then you know you eat the whole packet from your dispenser of Pez in one short session and it’s like you barely notice the tang/sweet so for now I’ll have to move on from this one- but wait it is like a bang for the buck Pez/Spree so that’s cool but then you spend on the house and display it like you collect Sci-Fi action stuff and do you look at it or do you eat it- if I look at it I could have bought the real lego and built my own creation.  If I eat it it could have been something else and not lego and whats the point in super decorating food to look like product when you are going to destroy it.  Its cooler to look like the food you are not suposed to eat and that reminds you why it’s a classic in the junk/comfort world of eating.  It’s like why do i want to use a battery machne with a lollipop- so I can feel like I’m doing something naughty- please....
