Bulk BallsName: Malted Milk Balls
Brand: Wilbur Place Purchased: Phone Order Price: $6.99 Size: 16 oz (one pound) Calories per ounce: 138 Type: Malted/Chocolate
![]() As I’ve stated before, I love malt. I will eat spoonfuls of Ovaltine malted milk powder straight from the jar. Good malt balls are not easy to find. First, they have to be covered with real chocolate. Those egg-shaped ones available around Easter are usually some fake chocolate compound and too sweet. The best bet is usually in the bulk candy aisle at the grocer if they carry Harmony Foods bulk chocolate covered malted milk balls. Earlier this week I placed a bulk order from Wilbur and one of the items was their Malted Milk Balls. These are not simply malted milk balls covered with a thin layer of chocolate, they’re super thick with high-quality milk chocolate. The malt inside is crisp, large and very malty with a touch of salt. They are by far the best malted milk balls I’ve had in my life. My big question is if anyone knows if naked malt balls exist, you know, just the malt balls without the chocolate coating. Rating: 9 out of 10.

i have found my mecca in your blog. what a fitting addition to my del.icio.us collection!!!
and you absolutely must check out jai patisserie in venice beach if you haven’t already.
cheers.
The best malted milk balls I’ve had came from Tom’s Market, somewhere down near Corona.
They were larger than Whoppers, maybe the size of these Wilbur ones. They also had thick, thick chocolate, but I never bothered learning the manufacturer’s name.
I really like the peanut butter malt balls at Whole Foods!—SoCal
re: naked malt balls… roll yer own! I bet an interesting cereal/malt powder concoction to be made—an alternative to a rice krispie cake.—SoCal
I’ve never seen naked malt balls, but I can’t imagine why you’d want ‘em - doesn’t the chocolate just complement the malt so nicely?
I, too am interested in naked malt balls. I’m a chocolate lover but am cutting back and like the insides of a malt ball just as much as the whole thing!
That’s how I found this blog...looking for malt balls without the choc. cover. Let us know if you find any!!
Okay, I’m on the case ... I’m going to find a source of naked malt balls or develop a recipe.
I have some inquiries out to a few sources, so we’ll see how that goes.
I’m thinking SoCal is on the right track, a rice krispies treat with gobs of malt in it might do the trick.
These aren’t naked malted milk balls, but they are matled milk tablets. Vermont County Store sells Horlick’s malted milk tablets and powder. Maybe that would be what you’re looking for.

i have been wondering how to make malt balls, too. i’m pretty sure the reason you don’t find naked ones pre-made is that malt is very hygroscopic, and it gets sticky when exposed to air. try leaving a half-eaten malt ball out on a humid day and see what happens. it gets all chewy. so it pretty much has to be covered in chocolate for any kind of shelf life.
but! i think if you cook malt powder (you can get it at the health food store) and sugar together, and add baking soda at the end, the way you would make a peanut brittle, you will get an approximation of malt balls. i am going to try it and see what happens. i will let you know if you are interested.
i like your blog. i am a pastry chef and i love candy, especially searching for new types and making my own.
Hey, a lot of good information on your site. I love chocolate covered malt balls, and didn’t see one brand which is great - called Chompers. I used to buy it at 7-11, about 2 years ago. I have not been able to find anything about it online either. It is a fruit flavored chocolate covered malt ball. There are 5 or 6 flavors, and they are much better than whoppers. Anyone know about these Chompers?
There is a Gelato shop just outside the new Baseball Stadium in downtown San Diego (10th st)that has malt gelato. It was really malty. I had it together with the dark chocolate. Wow!!!
I always got the Horlicks tablets as a kid in Chicago, however, nothing beats malt powder straight from the jar.
I always considered it a treat to find a malt ball that had become gooey on the inside.
JP
I too am a malt-maniac, and have wished to find chocolate-free malt balls. I’ve even used a knife to peel the waxy chocolate off Whoppers so I could have a handful of malt balls. Not that I have anything against chocolate. Heck no. If it’s candy, I’m in. Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory = my heaven. *sigh*
Like John P, I get a kick out of those Whoppers with the gooey insides. Sometimes instead of sticky, they’re crunchy. Probably phase 2 after the air gets to the malt.
I think I’ll try making malt ice cream.
I wonder how Katherine’s recipe turned out.
Oh, I loved Horlick’s malt tablets when I was young kid. I’ve done tons of searching online and found a place that has these tablets for cheap. To me though, they just don’t taste the same as I remember, but they aren’t bad.
I would love to learn how to make tablets out of Carnation’s Malted Milk, so if anyone can please help me with that, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks! Here’s the website to Horlicks.. http://www.spiced.com/SPICED/SKU/horlicks/horlicks.html
To start with theres a really good brand of malt balls, Albanese in Merrillville IN. good stuff there. As someone already said there are no naked malt balls due to the fact that they are fragile. Any moisture would simply turn it into mush. Not all easter ones are bad, just gotta find a good brand.
I’ve been searching around for a cheap pill presser, but their doesn’t seem to be such a thing. I’m hoping once I get my hands on one, I’ll be able to recreate the Horlick’s tablets with Carnation’s Malted Milk. Any ideas??
Try Georgia Nut for malted milk centers. I don’t know if they sell small quantities, but I do know they carry them in bulk. I’m looking for organic malt centers (bulk), myself.
I love you all. I have been looking for these for so long and I think the tablets are the way to go. If anyone finds that recipe for malt balls please let me know.
Did anyone else noticed that the date on the first few posts are from 1969? Pretty funny. Long live malted milk balls!
I have found a light carmel yogurt covered malted milk ball in the bulk food section at my grocery store. (Safeway) The coating is very thin and they are close to a naked malted milk ball. I LOVE them. Maybe someone could make a carnuba wax covered malted milk ball? You would only taste the malt.
As I am a Malted Milk Ball Lover it has been a long time since I have had the ones that Sears sold several years ago when they had the candy department in their larger stores. These are by far the best ones that I have ever had. There are a lot of real good ones on the market. The ones I like are from Harry and Davids stores here in Oregon and the ones that Fred Meyer Markets carry here in Oregon that come from Santa Cruz CA but none as good as the ones that Sears sold. Their malt had the best flavor of any.
I am all over this page! LOVE MALT! I too will eat spoonful after spoonful of powdered malt. I have found the Horlicks on Vermont Country Store site- HOWEVER they are far cheaper on the SPICED site.
I have been eating malt tablets since I was young but I remember them in a glass jar. I don’t know if they were Horlicks or a different brand. I have only found the Horlicks in the little packets and box. Does anyone remember the malt tablets that came in the jar. We use to get them at a health food store or sometimes a drug store would also carry them. IF ANYONE HAS FOUND THEM IN THE JAR PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
I remember Horlicks malt tabs in the jar. That’s the only way I remember them. My brother and sister would get them from the drug store. Horlick’s was so good. They stopped making those a long time ago.
I managed to get the Horlicks Tablets in the packs, but they didn’t seem to taste the same. Perhaps my taste has changed? I live next to a bunch of asian markets that actually have Horlick’s Powdered Malt. I think I tried that a few years back and wasn’t so impressed. So I’ve been content having Carnation Powdered Malt by the spoonful every so often.
If only I can find a tablet press machine for very cheap, I would get the carnation powdered malt and make tablets.
Thanks for the updates but I Think that I will get a spoon & the jar of malt. just home from a fire- I live in NOR-CAL & we are just burning big time. Started June 21 & has not been a break since. All you malt lovers out there please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. & by the way beer does not go with malt. Keep searching for the good malt stuff. Karen
I am a huge fan of Wilbur’s chocolates! My family has been eating them my whole life. I love love love the triple coated almonds. My dad forgot them in my Christmas stocking one year and I think I actually cried.
I also worked for a local Baltimore candy comany while in high school and college. It was a dream come true!!!
Georgia Nut sells malt balls and malt ball centers. They are out of Skokie, Illinois. Not only do they have chocolate malt balls, they have yogurt, peppermint, espresso, peanut butter, and more… I’m not sure if they sell the centers unless its in bulk, but its worth a shot!
That’s a great idea, Billy. I’ll have to give that a shot. Thank you
