Bubu Lubu
Bubu Lubu is a Mexican candy from Ricolino. It’s described on the package (in English and Spanish) as strawberry flavored jelly and marshmallow with chocolate flavored coating. I know, I know, why am I buying a mockolate product? How could I not! Look at that metallic blue wrapper, the white marshmallow character with the spiky Lisa Simpson hair and strawberry-flavored scarf & gloves! And the name, people, just say that name out loud a few times. They don’t say so on the package, but many folks enjoy Bubu Lubu frozen. (I don’t happen to care for cold candy, but that’s just me, so I ate mine room temperature.)
Even the shape of the bar is fun, with its little curves. Inside, it’s pretty obvious how it lives up to the description. A white marshmallow base with a stripe of fruity red jelly and then covered in a crackly mockolate coating. The strawberry jelly is tart and smooth but overwhelms any delicate vanilla flavors the marshmallow may have. The marshmallow is bouncing and lightly foamy, kind of like a meringue. The jelly creates a bit of a grainy coating, especially when it comes into contact with the mockolate, so it’s yet another texture. The mockolate, well, it’s kind of waxy and only vaguely cocoa flavored. I consider it the edible container for the jelly & marshmallow, not a full participant in this confection. The bar is rather light, even though it looks pretty big it only weighs in at 1.23 ounces (35 grams). Since there’s really nothing else like this in the American candy bar world, I think it’s great that this is finding its way onto American shelves. Not really a bar for me, the strawberry isn’t authentically jammy enough. But hey, it was 50 cents, so it’s not like I can expect something extraordinary. If you’re watching your calories, the fact that there’s no chocolate in there and all that marshmallow & jelly means that it rings in at a modest 126 calories. This actually isn’t the first time I’ve bought Bubu Lubu, but this was the best looking bar I’ve had so far. I’m not sure if I’m not getting them fresh, or this is just the way that they always look. I’m not sure I’d ever find this combination, even factory-fresh with top notch ingredients excellent, but I’m sure that there are many fans of the bar. This is one of those things I daydream about being made high quality. How good would that be? Apparently Americans LOVE chocolate covered marshmallow - Russell Stover sure sells enough. It’s only a small leap to add a tasty fruit gel or jelly to the mix!
I love bubu lubu! I think it’s a sort of comfort food for me, because a part of me realizes that it is lower quality on the candy quality spectrum. I usually find them fresh in mexican markets (a great place to find a host of unfamiliar candies).
When I studied abroad in Mexico these were everywhere. I absolutely hated Bubu Lubu, the jelly was way to firm and the “chocolate” was blah.
I saw this at the Target on La Brea and Santa Monica last week. Glad to see that you’ve reviewed it!
I found this bar at my local Target (Miami, FL) and had to buy one. I find the bar unusual, but nothing special. I do like the jelly marshmallow combination though. Could be much better with a dark chocolate coating.
i too found these at Target one day up at the registers. i have a thing for oddity candies (i hate 99% of the Hershey and Mars lines. there, i said it), and my eye caught these. both the price, size(i dont like full sized bars) and description were right(im a marshmellow junkie), so i tried it. and i have to say, these are now about my favorite treat to pick up at target, over Choxie or any of the other smaller brands out there. horribly addictive, and probably a good thing it ISNT any bigger. since its mostly air i could probably eat a larger sized one.

The jelly part reminds me of those Kosher Joya gels that come out around passover.
This looks just like a Big Turk - exact same curves, only Big Turk uses real chocolate and the fruity jelly isn’t overwhelming; just perfect. No marshmallow in Big Turk, though. Big Turk=yummy chocolate goodness....

I found a Bubu Lubu and another Mexican confection in my shopping bag from a Walmart in South Jersey. As I know I didn’t purchase them, I can only assume the customer in line ahead of me forgot to pick up his last bag. I wish I could remember what the second candy item was--I’m thinking large, marshmellowy, pink & white...?
Due to profound wimpiness, I was unable to taste these intriguing-looking treats, but I gave them to some teens hanging out in a Starbucks later. They seemed appreciative.
Sounds like crap. I don’t think I’d eat one of these if I was starving to death. If it was made by a respectable confectioner with real chocolate and high quality marshmallow and jelly filling I might consider it but as long as it’s only available from a bottom tier chocolatier, no way. Also, who can be sure of the sanitary standards being employed (or not as the case may be) by a candy maker located in a third world country?
Hey, Thanks for the shout out! Nice Bubu Lubu review. I found them pretty nasty, but I still haven’t tried one frozen. Have you tried Mazapan?
Just for people to know...my son is very allergic to tree nuts, peanuts and eggs..well when we went to Mexico I was really happy because this is a treat my son could eat NO PROBLEM! is free of any of this...most chocolate coated things are made in factories that handle this allergenics.. but the bubu lubu is safe to eat....I love the happines that this little treat brought to my child!
