1. Oh, how I LOVE the candy corn!  And the punkins!  It is one of the reasons I love Halloween candy season!  I eat all the corn by nibbling off the colours.  Is there anything better than sitting at one’s keyboard taking tiny nibbles of yummy candy corn and punkins?  No way!  And I am so sad because I haven’t found any candy corn yet because the stores are sold out of them.  Booo.  Now I’m jonesin’ for some pure sugar faux veggies.  I think I’ll call in sick today...heh.  (can you tell I love the candy corn with all my heart?)

2. I don’t know if it’s made anymore or even who made it in the 1st place but I really like caramel apple candy corn.  Yummy!  The last time I had it was about 4 years ago and I haven’t seen it in the stores lately.

4. One of my aims in life if I ever go to America is to try Candy Corn. I’ve been told it’s somewhat like butterscotch. One thing I don’t understand though is it soft or hard?

   this is for you candy corn is meant to be soft, but half the time it sits around in a bowl because it’s not so popular, so it just sits and by the time youu get at it, its rock hard

8. I can eat sweet stuff forever, today for dinner (im really lazy about cooking:) i just grabbed a tub of chocolate chip cookie dough and brownie chunk ice cream. My only quirk is I always have to brush my teeth when they feel coated from sugar

I love candy corn--on a seasonal basis, and the pumpkins,too.  But ya gotta get the high quality corn (like the Brachs) or it is just disgusting.  I recently had some off-brand candy corn and it was like eating wax with a heavy undertone of red food dye (you know, that bitter taste often found in red cake icing?).  And I hate to diss wax--Sweetened wax lips taste 10x better than this candy corn.  The next day, by contrast, I had the good stuff--there’s no comparison. 

   Okay, now I’m dying to go buy some autumn mix.  Do you know how much weight I’ve gained since I started reading this blog??!

11. I have never understood the love for candy corn.  It’s like eating straight sugar.  Sweets, like hots, should have some distinctive flavor and should not be eaten for their own sake.

12. Candy corn is great!!! And when sitting at your computer, some cany corn mixed with roasted peanuts is too good. You look down after a couple of minutes to find that it’s all gone!

14. What I really miss are the little cellophane packages of candy corn that used to be available at Halloween, to give out to trick or treaters. I’ve been looking for them for over a decade and haven’t found them.

    Mellocremes (halloween, valentine’s, and easter) used to be one of my favorite candies, but now I find it too sweet to eat very much. (One of the mixes had a light brown one with a different flavor - maple-y, perhaps? - but that seems to be gone now.) But when I do eat it, I eat my candy corn one color at a time (and first biting the green stem off the pumpkin).

    Karen, i agree - gotta get the good quality candy corn or it’s not worth it. Must be that touch of honey that Cybele mentioned.

    captain hummingbird, I also think the different colors are slightly different. But maybe it’s primarily due to thickness? On the other hand, the different colors in the valentine’s mellocremes (red, pink, white) have very different flavors or something, and in that case it’s not a form-factor difference.

15. susan i have to agree candy corn is personally one of the worst treats you can get trick or treating… does anyone think their is an age limit for trick or treating for kids??

16. i LOVE candy corn.  LOVE it.  but i think i’m in the minority in that i prefer the generic brands.  brachs is somehow too “wet” for my liking-- maybe it’s the honey.  farleys is drier, grainier and i vastly prefer it

18. Tricia and Karen, Brach’s still makes the maple flavored mellowcremes!! I bought some just yesturday in my grocery store (I’m in NJ). Came in a mix called: “Assorted Autumn Mellowcremes”. It has yellow (vanilla flavored) cornstalks and corn cobs, maple jugs and cornstalks, chocolate bats and cats and the normal pumpkins. Yum!

    I just tried the Target brand Autumn mix last night just to see how the taste differs. It was AWFUL. YUCK. I don’t see how the Sugar Savvy review could rate those the best in taste. So gross, I had to throw them out. Long live Brachs’!!!

19. Tricia - they sell those individual packages for Halloween in our local Kroger store.  I haven’t seen them anywhere else.

20. Rebecca, is is Brach’s or some other brand available at your Kroger? I don’t shop there (won’t use their spyware card) but maybe I can slip a fiver to a neighbor… :^)

    Sera, we had a bag of Target brand in the house - was going to use them to decorate a gingerbread house. I tried it last night just to see and yeck, I’m with you. There’s no subtlety to the flavor at all, just pure sweet.

21. Goelitz, the Jelly Belly people, also make a mix with a maple flavored mellowcream. The mix is called “Fall Festival Mix”, and is very good. I think it also includes red-hot cinnamon candy corn. Which can actually be a shocker if you aren’t expecting it…

    I agree that candy corn is painfully sweet, but it certainly tastes like more than just straight sugar! I love it, but just around the holidays. Mmmm.

22. I’m finding it hilarious that the halloween candy with the most comments (and probably one of the top ten over all) is, of all things, CANDY CORN!  Who knew such a simple treat could stir such passionate feelings? 

    All that said, I had to go out and buy the darn things.  I couldn’t find them at Ralphs, so I had to make a special trip to Longs (drugstore) just to find them.  And I did.  My take?  The Indian corn is the best.  I liked the pumpkin mellowcremes and the candy corn, but could only eat a couple of those at a time and then had to stop--felt like I had a rock in my belly.  The choclate candy corns seem to possess more, well, depth and complexity (if any kind of candy corn can be said to possess depth and complexity), and I could keep eating those all day.  And I did. And now I feel sick.  I should stop reading this site until after candy season ends. . . .

    Oh, and I didn’t think the chocolate ones tasted so much like tootsie rolls, which I don’t really like, but I can’t quite place the flavor either--sort of cocoa-ey.

24. I like candy corn a lot and have since I was a wee lass—to my taste buds, it has, like, a butterscotchy taste rather than just “generic sweet”—and I can’t detect any taste or texture difference between brands.
    
    The Mellowcreme Pumpkins—don’t get me started on those! THOSE are a top-flight candy delight, in my opinion, a gem of the confectioner’s art. It’s like munching delicately—and savoring—huge hardened dollops of butterscotch flavored cake frosting. I would give those a 10 rating! Again, the butterscotch taste rather than “plain sugar.” Deeee-LISH!

25. The Brachs Halloween pumpkins are addictive; I’ve been buying a bag every couple of weeks since they appeared in stores in September so I can have them in the non-Halloween months. I limit myself to a few pumpkins a week to make the stash last until the next Halloween.  Eating no more than two at one sitting is perfect; they are too sweet to eat anymore than that at once.

26. Do a review of Brach’s sweet ‘n salty mix! I just saw it at Wal-Mart, it’s a plastic snack bowl with packages of candy corn, m&m;’s and salty peanuts. You mix them together. Wal-Mart hadn’t marked down their Halloween candy as of yesterday, so I just bought a pound each of the ingredients and made my own. If you like candy corn, you’ll love this mix!

    Makes my foodie imagination soar, how about candy corn, Bugles, and habanero peanuts for a ‘Mexi-corn’ snack mix? Candy corn as a trail mix component is sadly neglected. Let’s do something about it!

28. I shied away from the Autumn Mix for almost a year.  Then again, I shied away from most food for almost a year.  But now that I’m trying to eat more, I decided to pick up a bag of these.

    The Indian corn isn’t great, but I never like anything chocolate-flavored (except chocolate, of course.) Candy corn is candy corn--sweet and addictive, but ultimately rather bland.  As for the pumpkins--just like you said, by the time you’ve learned your lesson, the bag is empty.  Thick, rich, chewy--like really GOOD candy corn, so much so that I don’t even like candy corn much anymore.  Now that Halloween’s over, I can get a bag of them for 59 cents.  I’ll be miserable when they’re gone.

33. Brach’s is the only candy corn I will buy.  I’ve tried the others and they are just not right. 

    When I want something that says AUTUMN, I get some candy corn.  My grandparents always had it in their candy dish in the fall.

    Oh, now I’ll have to go get some of that tomorrow.

Candy Corn is fun.  As kids (and sometimes still) we would break off the white tips and stick them to our eye teeth so that we had dracula fangs.  Alternately, we would also break off the fat yellow ends (or brown) and stick them over our front teeth.  It looks like you have really nasty buck teeth when you do this.  My kids do this now.  I can’t believe how many of their friends have never heard of doing this. You can have a lot of fun with Candy Corn.  Brachs is definitely the best.

35. I LOVE Brach’s Halloween Mellowcremes. I will settle for candy corn, but the Halloween Assortment is really the best. It is getting harder and harder to find. And it has to be Brach’s. There is no substituting other brands. My mom started me out on this many years ago and every year I MUST have it during October!

36. My favourite candy involve the Ferrero Roché chocolate. It so good. I melt’s in your mouth so slowly. Just thinking of it make my hungry. I also love the Coffee Crisp. I don’t personally like the smell or taste of coffee. But this delicious treat is nothing like it.

37. Oh I love the pumpkens! and ya they do tase like butterscoch. Very Very sweet, can eat a whole bag, if i have coffee! Though i do feel a little quezy now. XP Ugg thats enough until next year. *urp*

38. What happened to Brach`s Autumn mix? Where are the chocolate cats, maple jugs, and the ears of corn and shocks of wheat? Are we just going to get 2 varieties of candy corn and pumpkins?

    As well, what happened to the Easter mellowcremes? Did Brach`s give in to the PETA terrorists because we were biting the heads of mellowcreme bunnies and chicks?

40. Oops!  I was mistaken about the candy corn m&m;’s.  They don’t exist.  It’s Candy Corn Hershey’s Kisses that I saw!  Yep, had to buy em too.  They’re very sweet.  More like white chocolate than candy corn flavored, but they’re quite delicious.

41. Oh i disagree, Brach’s was ok, but the Goelitz Autumn Mix was THE BEST,

    this year I visited my local Hallmark (2 now actually) to purchase my favorite Halloween candy, the Goelitz Autumn Mix to find that sitting on their shelf was Jelly Belly Autumn mix jelly beans! I didn’t want jelly beans, I wanted the beautiful mallowcremes, maple included-corn too & the wonderful CINNAMON candy corn. I’m writing Goelitz -I’m so sad!

42. i can remember a butterscotch candy i think it was called hens and chickens that had shredded coconut mixed with it. this was a good candy i miss not having any for over 50 years. now i have diabetes and only can have unsugared. sure wish you would consider making this style. thanks again bruce mckean

Thanks for the info on Brach’s, who I think makes some of the ‘best’ candy (of all varieties) in the world.  My favorites are their candy and the jelly nougats (which seem to be getting harder to find though). A few of the other brands pail in comparison when it comes to this company, at least as far as I’m concerned.

    P.S. I am also a fan of their autumn mix candy, and can’t wait to taste their caramel corn as well.

47. I love just about everything Brach’s makes!! Except for the marshmellowy egg things.. Those were gross.. But Candy Corn!!! I LOVE that stuff Every year I trade off random candies with my younger siblings to get candy corn. It is soooo yummy. It is like a must have every year.
