Boyer’s Mallo CupWhile on that fateful trip to Pennsylvania in February I picked up some Mallo Cups. How could I not? They’re made right there in Altoona by the Boyer Candy Co. Soon, I will have tasted all the marshmallow cups there are. Boyer is known for cup candies, they also have the Smoothie Peanut Butter Cup, which has a devoted following. The Mallo Cup is the East Coast version of the Cup-o-Gold which consists of a milk chocolate cup filled with marshmallow (of differing consistencies) and a little coconut on the top. The coconut smell is quite apparent when raising the cup to the mouth. The chocolate is sweet and very creamy with the coconut bits providing a chewy texture. The marshmallow center is soft and runny, but not too flowing as to make a mess. Like the Valomilk, the Mallo Cup suffers from some structural integrity issues - in this case the chocolate base is too thin, so I was not able to remove either cup in my package from the paper without leaving some chocolate behind - basically bottoming out. (If you look closely at the photo, which you can click to enlarge, you’ll see that there is no base at all as I wasn’t able to peel it off for the photo. Maybe refrigeration would help.) The marshmallow itself has a nice flavor and consistency - it’s not at all foamy but not viscous or grainy like some others marshmallows. It doesn’t have any perceptible flavor of its own so I came away with more of a chocolate/coconut vibe. I liked it quite a bit better than the Cup-O-Gold, I liked the sweetness of the chocolate, nutty scent of the coconut and mellow filling and the proportions seem better balanced (the Cup-O-Gold seemed to be too much chocolate and of course was single cup in a package). The unique selling proposition of the Boyer Candies, though, is the “Play Money Rebate Offer”. The tray in the Mallo Cup package is actually a coupon advertising their rebate program - save up 500 Points and you can get a $1.00 rebate. Each Mallo Cup tray is worth 5 points. Yes, you get a dollar for every 100 Mallo Cups you buy! The points are also good for other merchandise such as candy tins, sweatshirts, mugs and caps. I have no idea how long they’ve been doing this, but the copyright notice on the package says 1983. Other opinions: Writers/Artists Snacking at Work gave it a 7.5, Candy Wrappper Museum just doesn’t like marshmallow, Taquitos.net thinks it smells like coconut and finally, read about the long road back for the Mallo Cup production line.

I grew up in Altoona and every Christmas, my elementary school classmates and I would get a gift from the Boyer company...a little holiday box filled with mallo cups and peanut butter cups! the little boxes didn’t have the play money in them though but I sure loved collecting those cards! what great memories of that yummy candy!
I ADORE Cup-O-Gold, and I’d love to try these, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen them out here on the West Coast (Orange County). For that matter, I can never seem to find Cup-O-Gold anymore, either. I could order them, but if I had to buy a whole case of candy, I’d have to eat a whole case of candy!
I do order modjeskas, though...those are outstanding candies.
I’ve only had mallo cups once and it was refrigerated (my roommate prefers her chocolate that way). It was decent, but I think I would prefer it not refrigerated as the marshmellow filling was a bit too tough.
The copyright date might be 1983, but it would’ve been updated in 1994 for the addition of “Nutrition Facts”. Like Valomilk, the Mallo Cup package appeals to me in a lileks.com kind of way, but I just don’t want the candy that’s inside. The only box that I would buy today just to have the box would be Cherry Chan.
They always look to me as if they’re crumbly, which scares me off them.
Every once in a while, I would get one of those from people during Halloween. I remember them as being pretty good, but I haven’t had them in an age. Thanks for bringing back good memories
Lesley - I’m inclined to agree - Modjeskas are like naked See’s Scotchmallows ... yum!
g - yeah, I’m not keen on refrigerated mallows ... but it might make them easier to remove from the cups.
Dave - excellent point about the wrapper!
Carly - yeah, when I had my first Cup-o-Gold I didn’t know that was coconut on top, it just looked unappealing.
Miriam - I recall getting these at trick-or-treat too ... and I always traded them away!
Steph - lucky you! I grew up near a Purina dog chow factory ... they never brought us anything. (Well, not that we knew of, but I did eat school lunches.)
When I was a kid, you could save 500 points and get a box of candy in the mail! I was so disappointed when they changed it to only a dollar off coupon. (I think this happened around the same time Cracker Jack stopped putting real toys in their boxes.) Now, with a stamp costing 39 cents to mail it in, it is not worth the trouble fore the 61 cents differential.
BTW, not all coupons are 5 points - they have 10, 25 and 50 point tickets as well - and maybe an occasional 100 point if lucky. So it will not take 100 purchases of Mallo Cups to get to 500 points. Still, not worth the hassle.
This is one of my favorite candies!!! I pick up several pkgs every time we go to Cracker Barrel (which also has Valomilk).
I don’t often have the Mallow Cups from Boyers, but I love the Peanut Butter Smoothies! I’m used to seeing Boyers items sold all around here since I only live 20 minutes from the factory. Gardner’s Candies is also very close though I’m not sure if they have a certain marshmallow candy. They’re famous for their Peanut Butter Meltaways. Such a unique and smooth filling. Try them if you ever have the chance.
I lived two streets down from the Williamsport Candy Co. which is pretty much Williamsport’s best-kept secret from it’s own citizens and I’ll never forget the first time my father took me as a child. After the first time I ate one, I fell in love with them and thus began my collection of the “mallow cup rebates”. I have over 100 of them and unlike the description above says, I’ve seen them range anywhere from 5 cents to 50 cents.
I grew up on Mallowcups back in Pittsburgh. We’d get the 2 pack with the coins. Some coins were 50 cents and some as little as 1 cent. You’d collect 500 cents worth of coins and get free chocolate. Now, I guess they give $1 back. My mother sent me a bunch of coins, so I could get several dollars back. The 2 packs have a card on the bottom which has 2 coins. We used to get the mini mallow cups at Halloween, but the chocolate seemed to overpower the marshmallow filling; you’d open the package and the bottom would be hard marshmallow filling leaking out. But, they’re great just the same! I get my mom to send me some out occasionally.
I did get a 50 point card on my last package ... I didn’t understand until the comments here that they varied (like a lottery).
Scott - I’m guessing shipping candy is just too costly - easier to send you the money to buy it locally.
I have eaten Mallo Cups since I was a kid.I am now a grandmother. It was a treat to get to go to the corner store for a Mallo Cup. Where I work at now they make sure to put several spaces with them in. Our management, says you have to remember, “We have mostly women, and alot are grandmothers, and they all eat Mallo Cups, so we have to keep them supplied.” We all laugh, but we do go through alot of them.
Mallo cups are good. I eat them all the time. I’ve saved up 945 points so far! I’m saving for a tin of the candies which costs 1000 points. I just wish all of the prizes didn’t cost so much!
In my last Mallo cup, I got 50 points!
I grew up in Altoona, but live in South Carolina now. Every trip I make back to Altoona, I stop at the Boyer Factory and buy a box of imperfect Mallo Cups and/or imperfect Peanut Butter Smoothies if they have them. I just bought some last weekend and they are priced at $5 for a 5lb box (Roughly 100 cnt). I take them into work for my coworkers. They love them, but can’t get them down here. I remember when Boyer candy bought Lakemont Park and called it BoyerTown. I think they lost a lot money on that and probably should’ve put that money toward distribution instead, because the changes they made to the park sucked. Anyway, it’s Lakemont Park again, home of the world’s oldest wooden roller coaster.
Boy am I glad I came across this site. I grew up in Philadelphia Pa in the early 50’s. I have lived in Columbus Ohio for 20 years and even though people here seem to be familiar with the candy nobody remembers the “coins” printed on the package support card. My brother and I redeemed many $5.00 sets of “coins” for candy. I also remember getting a couple $1.00 cards (for a kid, that was like hitting the lottery) I seem to remember you got 12 candy packages for redemption. Does anyone else remember?
Growing up in Northern Pennsylvania, I collected the coins and redeemed them for 45 RPM records. 500 coins would get you 10 45’s. Living in Denver now, hard to find out here.
I was raised in a town north of Altoona named Bradford. Actually, I have to drive through Altoona to get home. For me, Mallow Cups are one of the candy bars I would choose if I had to choose one. I love them. I’ve tried the Cup-O-Gold and the Valomilk versions and I dislike them. They don’t satisfy the craving for a Mallow Cup as there is nothing quite like it.
Today I was cleaning out some closets and came across a bag--and what was in it but Mallow Cup coins! Seein that I am now 50, that means I have been hanging on to these cards for about 40 years now! It’s amazing to look back and see what was really important to you as a kid. And yes--I even have a $1.00 card--and yes, it did feel like hitting the lottery. My kids are now to to count up how many I have--I’ll keep you posted!
Just letting you know my wife bought a mallo cup for me yesterday, that must of been sitting on shelf for months or was sent to them that way.Mastins market canaseraga NY.It was a pale white color outside.Might want to check the store for more like that.# on package is 6060/3.Any ? [personal details removed by admin]
My grandfather use to own a Mill/Grocery Store in Jonesborough TN. I can remember, everytime I’d go visit - Mallo Cup and a scoop of hand dipped ice cream was my treat. That was 42 years ago. Over the last year I moved to WY and no one out here knew what I was talking about. So for my birthday when my parents asked me what I wanted (keep in mind they have bought me cars and houses before)I told them...Mallow Cups. Yea, there was a long period of silence on the phone. Dad had a hard time finding them now that Pappaw has past away and the store isn’t in the family any longer. BUT...he and some friends scoured the city until they found enough to make a box and I think it was the best present anyone could have given me! It brought back a lot of fond memories for me! Forget the points!!! This is a family tradition I trying to carry on here! Not to mention, I had to put them little suckers under lock and key cuz now everybody out here in Wyoming’s looking for them. Probably re-started the craze for them in good ole Northeast TN too!
I used to live close to Altoona and everytime I go back to visit I try to make a stop at the Boyer factory to get some smoothies and mallo cups. They are the greatest.
help, where can i buy mello cup candy. If not in a store in N.c. can i order by mail.
Thank you
Ann - you can order them right from the factory via their website (linked above in the review specs):
http://www.favoritesof.com/boyer1.htm
I’m not sure where you can find them locally though, maybe someone near you will chime in.
I wished I could get a bunch of imperfect mallow cups. I have several people at my work that love them to death. What do you say Chuck? I Just wish that Boyer would go back to the 500 points redeemed and get 10 packs of mallow cups sent to you in the mail. Perhaps we need to get a petition drive going.
If anyone can help me out on the reject mallow cups, smoothies or the peanut butters, let me know at:
thanks,
Greg
I grew up in a little coal mining town outside of Johnstown, and every year at Christmas in Sunday School we’d get the little gift boxes of Mallow Cups and I think Smoothies (commenter #1 is right - you didn’t get the coins). My parents still go to the factory every year to pick up the Sunday School treats. Occasionally when we go up to PA, I’ll buy a Mallow Cup on the way back at Sheetz in Bedford, or if I’m at the Altoona VA Hospital (one of my customers) I’ll hit the vending machine. I still get excited about getting 50 cents on my cardboard coin, even though I don’t do anything with them.
I love mallo cups...but I love the points more....I buy points...new old, doesn’t matter...email me what you have, I’ll email you an
Mallo Cups are great! When I was a kid I saved up 500 points and sent in for a case of them. Now you only get $1 rebate, but for 1000 points you cant still get a tin of candy. Other prizes are at http://www.boyercandies.com/catalog.html
uh, that’s CAN still get…
Like everybody else who grew up in PA, Mallo Cups were always available and always a favorite candy. Not so when you move elsewhere. Occasionally I find them in a store around here but not often enough.
Next month, my step sister and her husband will come to visit me. They always ask is there anything from home I want. Guess what my “anything from home” will be this year? And chocolate covered pretzels too.
I have my supply of mallo cups, some pnut butter cups and pnut butter chocolate covered pretzels. Even enough to share with my kids and grandkids. That is called happiness. If anybody has a Sav A Lot store, you should be able to find mallo cups there. They are fresh but not as wonderful as those fresh from the factory. Happy Eating.
My dad loves Mallo Cups and used to eat them all the time back in W. Virginia. But when we moved to the West coast he could’t find any, he was really disapointed. But 15 years later we went back to see some family and while doing so my dad was on the hunt for Mallo Cups. We finallly found 2 boxes of Mallo Cups at Sheetz, my dad started taking the King sized Mallo Cups but then instead he stoped and just took the whole box of them. He even bought a styrofoam cooler and ice so that they wouldn’t melt in the car. (Me and my sister split the other box)
LOVED Mallo Cups.
I’m sad they are not readily available at the corner stores near me in Colorado.
I collect Mallo Cup Play Money and Candy Wrappers. If any one out there has any to sell or knows of where there are any, please let me know.
thanks
I got seconds in the mallo cups a couple of months ago (from the factory) and they didn’t have the mallo cup play money. And the Mallo cups I buy at Sav a Lot doesn’t have the play money either. I wonder if they still put it in the candies? I need to ask sister-in-law who works for Boyer Brothers. Anyhow, if anybody gets to Altoona and goes to Boyers, you can buy seconds much much cheaper then the “best” ones. Taste just as good. And if you ever get the chance to get the pretzels, covered with peanut butter and then chocolate, don’t miss this treat!
oops, I meant to comment on Adeena mentioning Gardners candies. Oh so delicious. I can actually find some of them at Easter, at our local Rite Aid here in TN.
I grew up on Mallow Cups. They are on my top five list.
And I have to drive straight through Altoona on my way home to Bradford.
I never find them any more in stores in CT. I have loved them since childhood (which is a long time ago). Saw some in a Boston 7-11 and I bought all they had. Is the Boyer company privately owned? Must be hard to make $’s with distribution so narrow.
Mallo cups are the greatest thing. I just love them. I can’t get enough. Not many places around in northeast Wisconsin sell them anymore. They are #1 on my list of favorite chocolate. MMMMMMMMMMMMM....
I love mallow cups too. By far my favorite candy of all time. You guys are right ...you can’t find them oftem enough anymore. I would love to try the cup-o-golds and valomilks!
I’m reading these comments with a great deal of pleasure. I began saving the cardboard coins in 1954. Can anyone top that?
Chuck
LONG LIVE THE MALLOW CUP, LONG LIVE SATAN! I GIVE IT An 11!

Loved these things since I was a kid, and still do. I’m likea kid to hurry up and open the package to see how many points I got. I collect the points and tape them together. If anyone doesn’t want them please let me know, I would like to have them.
Greg
i love your malow cups. they are hard to find in the stores around here. doyou.s still make the bit size one,s that use to come in bags. thank you. how could i order some from you.s
thank you
i love mallo cups except for the coconut and i scrape the top part off---valomilk are good but not as good as the mallo cups. have you ever thought to make a coconut free malo cup? I think it would really sell and then I could eat the whole cup and not take time to scrape the top and loose some of that wonderful chocolate.

I dont know what happened in the last year or so to the Mallo cup recipe but Boyer has definately changed something, They have a terribly peculiar taste.
Another candy ruined.
When I was a young boy , back in the late forties, we bought Mallow Cups. They had a contest to spell out the word"Mallow Cup”, with the letters inside the package. If you spelled out the whole word, you won a case of them. Everyone in the whole town could not find the letter “M” , so we never won anything.
I’ve always loved Mallow Cups so I’d get a bunch of them when I found a gas station or store that carried them. Now I just order them by the case from on-line candystores so I can have one whenever I want. I have about 3000 cents collected and the values (5,10,25,50) are pretty evenly distributed. I haven’t seen a 100 coin in recent years though.
My grandfather, who worked for the Norfolk & Western railway in Roanoke, VA, used to pick up the discarded Mallo Cup Money off the train tracks. I’ve got a bunch of it, though most of the money is cut from the full cards. I’ve even got 2 Mallo Dollars (again, cut from card), “F” and “J”. I’d part with some of this for the right price; email me at .
Why is it that I can`t find Mellow Cups and I live in western Pa.? I`m 73 and it was one of my favorite candies.
Thank You
Bonnie
Living in Texas means never buying a Mallo Cup from a store. Had lunch with some friends today and how we got started talking about Mallo Cups is beyond me. I grew up in Western Pa (50’s/60’s) and loved Mallo Cups as a child and still do, but no one sells them here. Thank goodness for the internet.
I work for Cracker Barrel and all of our Country Stores carry Mallo Cups, so when you are traveling stop in a Cracker Barrel and get your Mallo Cups, I am a big fan of them since childhood. I used to collect the coins and for 500 pts you got candy in the mail. I love them. And still collect the coins today.
I live in Philadelphia,Pa. As a kid growing up in the 60’s, I bought a lot of Mallocups and saved the Mallocup play money.I once got a $1 coupon, it was like hitting the lottery! After saving 500 points was instructed to send the points to Altoona and recieved a box of Mallocups in the mail, good memories.
i grew up in Altoona in the 40s and 50s and early 60s only about 4 blocks from the
boyer factory and have very fond memories of the overpowering, wondeful sweet smells that used to emanate from that factory. it was absolutely delicious.
i too can remember the “cents” cards as we used to call them. only in those days they had them in denominations from 1penny to $1.00. we would collect them and run up to the factory and turn them in for 10 new mallo cups and start to save all over again
i don’t think the mallo cup will ever go out of style and i’m so glad they are on the rebound. when i was in altoona this past summer, i did my share to help them stay in business. walked out of there about $85.00 poorer. but it was worth it.
hope they never go out of business.
just wondering where you can find mallo cup ice cream; it used to be made, can never find any store that sells it
Not sure where Nancy found her Mallo Cup Ice cream but am including a web site that carries several unusual ice creams, mallo cup ice cream being one of them. Think you would need to be in PA to get some of it though.
http://www.creamery.psu.edu/flavors.htm
It sounds like a place I’d like to visit.
Another comment for Nancy. Hershey’s Ice cream company in Harrisburg (not connected with Hershey’s chocolate)also makes or used to make the Mallo cup ice cream.
And my sister in Altoona tells me PSU ice cream will be served at the Blair County Fair this year.
I was born in raised in Western NY, outside of ERIE Pa and loved Mallo Cups, They cant be found and nobody in Missouri ever heard of them boy they are missing a treat Skip
I was a huge Mallo Cup fan growing-up in Northern NJ in the early 70’s. Bought at local candy stores walking to school, and sometimes a box of ten at the Two Guys department store. I sent in 500 points several times, receiving the 10 in a small box. I also recall stringing those points along a strip of scotch tape, and being thrilled to get a “dollar” coin. Found someone selling a variety of coins several years ago on E-bay, including the elusive “dollar”. I now have a pair of small frames hanging in my otherwise 100% suburban den with six small items, and as people move closer to them - - I always knnow the last thing they expect to find are the 1 cent, 5 cent, 10 cent, 25 cent, 50 cent, and dollar Mallo Cup coins. Most don’t know the candy or the coins, so just don’t understand…
I’ve been loving mallo cups for more than 25 years and have never had any problem finding them in almost any convenience store near my hometown. I’ve never saved the points-they seemed kind of pointless, but the candy is terrific.
If you cant find Mallo Cups in your area you can buy on ebay or a number of online stores. Just Google Mallo Cups. Then you can enjoy that wonderful flavor and collect the play money.
Try http://www.boyercandies.com/ to order candies.
There’s phone numbers to call and order. If you get near their location, you can buy the seconds much cheaper and they are just as delicious. Their chocolate, peanut butter covered pretzels are out of this world. Our Sav a Lot store here in TN carries mallo cups, as well as most Cracker Barrel restaurants.
Thats great to know you can order direct from boyer!!
I see http://www.boyercandies.com has a new website that is really neat you can order online and soon you will be able to redeem playmaony points online They are also going to have games for kids I can’t wait to show my grandkids .It’s really a fond part of my childhood
Does anyone remember the offer of saving so many wrappers up for a chance to win a pony? I ate a lot of Mallow Cups!
Boyer Candy now has a website where you can order directly from the factory. Go to http://www.boyercandies.com for all your favorites.
I have enjoyed mallow cups for years on end. I have collected the points and cash them in every so often but is not like what it used to be when I was a child. I couldn’t wait to get my free box of mallow cups in the mail.
I would like to know if there is anyone that doesn’t collect the points if you wouldn’t mind to send them my way. I have enjoyed doing this for years and will continue to do so.
Thanks,
Greg
If anyone around Altoona, PA stops by the boyer candy company, buy me a couple cases of misformed mallo cups and I will send you money to pay for and ship them to me in holland, Michigan. email Steve at please!
I have eaten and loved Mallow Cups for years. They are my favorite candy bar/cup but here in Kentucky they are very hard to find. When I do see them I buy a whole bunch like I did today and have already eaten 6 of them. I was a little disappointed in them as there wasn’t as much coconut in the chocolate as there usually is. Actually there was very little coconut and one had none, 2 had only one sliver and the rest it was hard to find any in them. Please go back to putting in the usual amount of coconut as that is what makes them special. Thank You
Like many of you, I grew up in NW PA and still live here. Mallo Cups are generally available around here but I have to say that I am very disappointed in both the quality and size of the candy.
The recipe has changed and the candy cups are so small now - almost the size of a silver dollar. Anyone else notice that? Still a favorite of mine ~ I will buy them until I can no longer find them.
I just sent the Boyer Company an email from their web site to let them know I recently found 2015 mello cup points all cut, taped to two sheets of paper ready to be mailed. There are three one hundreds, forteen fifties, and the rest twenty fives and tens...Of course this was completed some forty years ago. I used to buy my favorite candy from a local corner store and the candy machine at the bowling alley. I cann’t remember how much the candy was in late 60’s early 70’s? Maybe about 25-35 cents. I haven’t had an old cup in years! By the way, all those corner stores are also long gone… I will wait to see what the boyer company has to say in their reply. Maybe I will just keep these old points and frame them with all of the rest of the stuff I have kept from my childhood. The mello cup was surely my favorite candy bar as a kid. I still purchase many candy bars today for my sweet tooth! I havn’t seen those mello cups any where in years in up state New York. Thanks for listening.
JH
we have a small store-deli mart and would like to know if you have the seconds in your mallo cups, we have gotten them before and they were such a big hit in our store. our customer really liked them alot and want to know when we are going to get them again.
I grew up in the Southern Tier of NY. Hinsdale to be specific. I loved Mallo cups then and I still love ‘em now! Here in Rochester, NY they aren’t at every store, but they are around! They are the best candy around. I have ate them for over at least 35 years now. I have to say I am tempted to order them online. The cost is up to 1.09 a pack in the store. It is getting expensive to buy more than one! Rachelle
