Boyer Smoothie

Now that I’ve eaten a dozen Reese’s products, I thought I needed a change. So I had a Boyer Smoothie.

Boyer is based in Altoona, Pennsylvania and may be somewhat of a regional brand. I don’t see them out in Los Angeles, but they’re not hard to find once you get to the east coast or midwest.

I’m not sure I’ve ever had it before; it’s even odder now that I’ve had this cup. All this time I was expecting something called the Smoothie to be like a Buckeye (which is an ultrasmooth peanut butter filling in milk chocolate). They’re described as, “Creamy peanut butter covered with butterscotch.” Not only that, they’re chunky! The “butterscotch” coating is kind of like an overly sweet white chocolate and it’s studded with chopped peanuts, so it pretty much tastes like peanut butter fudge. The peanut butter filling is much like the Reese’s filling, it has a nice salty hit to it and is slightly crumbly.

But the whole thing had this sickly sweet smell to it. I guess if you’re allergic to chocolate, this might be the peanut butter cup for you. It’s just not for me. I want something else to play off the peanut butter, chocolate is a good companion as is coconut like in the Chick-o-Stick or the Peanut Butter Ginger Chews. As Boyer products go, I think I’ll stick with the Mallo Cup

  2. A 5-Pleasant was really generous.  I tried one of those last year, and I’d have to go with a 3 or even a 2.  Maybe people who love the idea of cup-candies but hate Reese’s would like them.  But I don’t want to know those people.

  3. Cybele, you never say directly, but are you in Los Angeles?  If you are, you might want to check out a store called Famima!! (yes, two exclamation marks).  I went in the other day and besides the varying Pocky’s (even Green Tea), they had some weird funky looking Japanese candies.  I got some chai tea infused chocolate disks there that I’ve never seen anywhere else.  Might be worth looking into!

  4. Amy - yeah, I didn’t know how to make them look nice, but then again, I’m just supposed to show you what it looks like, not sell it!

Tara - you know I debated on the 4 rating, but they weren’t that bad, and I did finish both cups ... which is saying something for me.

Julilla - yes, I do live in LA (I don’t know why I don’t just put that on the about page!). I did go to Famima!! one night after work not long ago over in West Hollywood. I even took photos ... which I should post somewhere. They did have a nice selection of Pocky and I picked up some so-so sushi. Their website says that they’re opening in Glendale & Hollywood (a little closer to me) so I was hoping to post when they open those. They had a spectacular selection of mints!

  5. YUCK!  Going up in PA, my bro would pretty much toss out all of the Boyer stuff we got in our Halloween treats.  Gross stuff!

  6. Wow--that brought back memories!  My mom used to give me those in my lunch box.  I liked them better than the Mallo-cups as I recall, but I have NO recollection of how they tasted (which probably says something)--that peculiar red-and-pumpkin packaging though, that takes me right back.  Thanks to your review, I can spare myself the caloric nostalgia if I come across those somewhere....

  7. I was browsing in a beverage emporium today and saw this candy.  I didn’t buy it, however, because it cost something like $1.50 for the pair pack.  Too much for my blood!

  8. Hey!  Smoothies are better than Reese’s PB cups by a looooong shot!  Throw them away?!!!  oy vey!
I really enjoy Smoothies and never feel bad about ending the life of each every one as I swallow and relish every morsel.

    Smoothies are the bomb.

  9. I would definately agree with Mr. Marks Smoothies are the bomb, I first dug my little teeth into them back in 2000-2001 when a good friend from school introduces me to them ---many more followed-- after that I was like Reese’s who? Yes sir I could never forget the great taste!!! A box will be coming my way very soon hahah!!

  10. Boyer Smoothies are delicious. Much better than Mallo Cups. I don’t think the coating taste like butter scotch, but, more like peanut butter fudge, with peanut butter filling.  OH SO GOOD !!!
Like Mallo Cups, they came with card that had “coins” printed on them, with value points. Collect enough of them, and you could send off for a free box of Mallo Cups.
I lived in Los Angeles (Bell) for 25 years, and used to but Smoothies and Mallow Cups at Thrifty Drug Store and Sav-On Stores.

  11. I grew up eating Smoothies, and I still consider them to be a treat.  They shouldn’t be compared to a Reese’s Cup, they remind me more of peanut butter no-bake cookies, or peanut butter fudge.  They are a very sweet peanut butter candy, best with a glass of milk.

  12. Can’t find these delightful candies anywhere except from the factory!  I grew up with Smoothies and they are one of the best… and were everywhere from the drug store candy counter to the ol’ mom & pop grocery stores.  Loved them in the 60’s and today too!! Still the same great taste although they’re not 2 for a nickle.  Still have some of the play money from those days!  Ordered a case awhile back and the granddaughters love ‘em.

Now if I could only find Black Cows!!!

  13. A “5” rating for a Boyer Smoothie is flat-out unwarranted.  These should be at the top of any peanut butter candy list and are much more enjoyable than Reese’s.  If Boyer was a national distributor with big bucks to market & promote this treat, it would be household commodity.

  14. I also grew up on Smoothies and loved them!  They are better than Reeces, but of course much harder to find.  I always thought having a Smoothie was definately a treat!  I have now been on the Internet trying to track them down and buying some.  They are the BEST!
