I did a review of the teensy variety pack of Ritter Sport a few weeks ago, and it just so happens that Robin's been helping me get more international sweets by having her writers traveling abroad pick up some candy for me to review. I have another half a dozen bars from this care package, so you can look forward to some other sweets picked up in Eastern Europe.
When I was taking the photos the first time around (above is my second stab at documenting these), the Rum Trauben Nuts (Rum, Raisins & Hazelnuts) smelled so incredibly good I all but two squares before realizing I had to take another picture.
Unlike other "rum flavored" chocolates, this is really rummy. If my German skills are good enough, I can tell you that this candy bar contains 2% Jamaika-Rum. The milk chocolate isn't too sweet and the raisins are plump and tart. Combined with the ample crunch of the hazelnuts, I'm in love with this bar. I'm afraid that it's not imported to the states, as I've never seen it before or maybe it is but I doubt it actually has that much rum in it when exported.
The Capuccino is rather similar to the Jogurt bar. The filling is creamy and has a slight tinge of mocha to it, but also has a slight sour bite to it. Maybe think of it as a capuccino cheesecake flavor. It's pleasant, but doesn't make me yearn for it like the Rum Trauben Nuss.
I like the Ritter Bars, they remind me a lot of Hershey's. Every one of them has been dependably sweet and smooth, but not as complex as I'd want from a more high-end bar. But then again, this is candy and that's what I want. Here's their motto from their website, "Ritter Sport. Square. Handy. Good."
Rating - Rum Trauben Nuss - 9 out of 10
Capuccino - 7 out of 10

A strange coincidence... I've had a very productive visit to the candy shop earlier today, and found that, after a long absence, five of these bars have resurfaced:
Dark Chocolate, Milk Whole Hazelnuts, White Whole Hazelnuts, Butter Biscuit (Knusperkeks), and (I'm reluctant to add) Marzipan. A rather limited choice, and I have yet to try it. You probably sampled their mini parallels, except the Dark one (50% cocoa solids). Does 7 out of 10 mean they're worth buying or better yet, sending over?
I like the one with the cookie (biscuit) inside.
You can get them at Trader Joe's or Cost Plus. No need to travel.
I just bought some at Trader Joes a few weeks ago. I originally thought because the name included the word "Sport", that they were a meal replacement bar. I found out not. Don't know why the word "Sport" is there, its confusing. But they are really yummy candy bars.
Ooh my, I haven't been reading your latest updates since something was up with the site feed...which I've not corrected so NOW I AM SUBSCRIBED TO TWO FEEDS, OR SOMETHING.
I've been eating Ritter Sport bars too, for the first time just last week! I haven't had the ones you've eaten though; so far, tried the cornflake and nougat ones. Oh. So good.
To admit my non-chocolate-intellectual-ness, I don't favor complex chocolates as much as before. I guess I'm too lazy to want to think about it: "Taste good, dammit!" I had a milk chocolate Caffarel bar that was around 30% chocolate, but ...SO! THAT'S 30% MORE THAN 0%!
According to what I remember about the cheesey film at the "museum" at the Ritter Sport Factory (only 20 minutes from my house!) the "Sport" in Ritter Sport comes from its shape. It was the first bar (at least in Germany) that fit into anyones coat pocket, due to its square shape, but weighed the sames as a normal bar, 100gm. So it was "sporty" to take along, and was made for the working man. It's also famous for it's "Knick-Pack" (snap-pack) that opens easily...and compels one to eat the whole bar.
I just saw a limited time mini-assortment that had various liquors in it, including wisky. I personal don't drink, but man, that just sounds nasty.
The nice thing about the factory store is you can buy "white-bag" multi-pacs of "imperfect" chocolate for pretty cheap. It's one perk of living in Germany
These things just surfaced in my school's grocery store (with English packaging, no less), which makes me wonder if they're becoming a little more widespread? I remembered this review, so I grabbed the rum-flavored one to try, and wow, that is some great stuff.
