Bulk Balls

Name: Malted Milk Balls
Brand: Wilbur
Place Purchased: Phone Order
Price: $6.99
Size: 16 oz (one pound)
Calories per ounce: 138
Type: Malted/Chocolate

As I've stated before, I love malt. I will eat spoonfuls of Ovaltine malted milk powder straight from the jar. Good malt balls are not easy to find. First, they have to be covered with real chocolate. Those egg-shaped ones available around Easter are usually some fake chocolate compound and too sweet. The best bet is usually in the bulk candy aisle at the grocer if they carry Harmony Foods bulk chocolate covered malted milk balls.

Earlier this week I placed a bulk order from Wilbur and one of the items was their Malted Milk Balls. These are not simply malted milk balls covered with a thin layer of chocolate, they're super thick with high-quality milk chocolate. The malt inside is crisp, large and very malty with a touch of salt.

They are by far the best malted milk balls I've had in my life. My big question is if anyone knows if naked malt balls exist, you know, just the malt balls without the chocolate coating.

Rating: 9 out of 10.

The best malted milk balls I've had came from Tom's Market, somewhere down near Corona.

They were larger than Whoppers, maybe the size of these Wilbur ones. They also had thick, thick chocolate, but I never bothered learning the manufacturer's name.

re: naked malt balls... roll yer own! I bet an interesting cereal/malt powder concoction to be made -- an alternative to a rice krispie cake. -- SoCal

I've never seen naked malt balls, but I can't imagine why you'd want 'em - doesn't the chocolate just complement the malt so nicely?

I, too am interested in naked malt balls. I'm a chocolate lover but am cutting back and like the insides of a malt ball just as much as the whole thing!
That's how I found this blog...looking for malt balls without the choc. cover. Let us know if you find any!!

Okay, I'm on the case ... I'm going to find a source of naked malt balls or develop a recipe.

I have some inquiries out to a few sources, so we'll see how that goes.

I'm thinking SoCal is on the right track, a rice krispies treat with gobs of malt in it might do the trick.

I can recommend another place that has Malt Balls to die for. Not only is it good chocolate, but the insides are scrump-deli-icious too. Georgia Nut Company, http://www.georgianut.com/. Mollie Stones also carries their candies. That's how I was introducted to Georgia Nut. The only downside is that they are a pain the in butt to order from sometimes. They have broken links (the woman I spoke to claimed the website worked fine 5 years ago) and sometimes they take forever to get back to you. But if you can ever get any product out of them, it's worth it.

I'm going to give Wilbur, http://www.wilburbuds.com/, a try on your recommendation. I'm also going to try some Malt Balls from the Chocolate Store, http://www.thechocolatestore.com/. I guess you can tell I'm fiending for Malt Balls. I won't even get into my Cherry Cordial fixation.
